Just that really. Off for a long weekend soon and can picture aimlessly wandering (having done the major sights previously)! Our 1st just us trip abroad since dc - so hoping for a magical break. I have no idea where to start as all the guides are so touristy! Please please tell me amazing spots you love in Rome!! Smile

Basilica di San Clemente and the Golden Palace are both near the Colosseum. The first is a church and crypt, shuts for lunch so be careful of timings. The second is still on our list to visit but has always been shut when we've tried (3 times...). The gardens are good for wandering around.

Ostia Antica is amazing and not too crowded. Do a Segway tour. Brilliant way to see Rome.

Oh yes. Forgot the scavi under St Peywrs. Particularly if you are a catholic it's very moving. You get to see the bones of St Peter, then to come out into the basilica and see "you are Peter and on this rock, I build my church" around the done in 6 foot high letters it's incredible

The square coliseum at EUR is stunning if you like Art Deco it's worth a visit.

Would second the twilight food walking tour in Trastevere (sp?). The best part of our trip last year, and you see really interesting small restaurants.

moggle highfive It was the best part of the trip for us too - I've done nothing but rave about it!

The Vatican was.....rushed and the Sistine Chapel was actually underwhelming. The Basilica next door though is amazing......if you can ignore the rude tourists taking video everywhere. There was a choir singing when we visited and I cried buckets.

Get up early and walk around. Last time I was there I set my alarm for 5.30am. I walked around in the dark for the first twenty mins but it was light by 6 ....absolutely magical to have the streets to oneself.
