To think our neighbours are ridiculous for paying this and refuse to pay my "share"

A house on our road came up for sale recently (its empty at the moment, was rented) and as you do, I had a nosey at the particulars on Right Move. In the description in says that there is a service charge of £500 per year. I thought this was odd as we pay no such charge and it's not a flat or leasehold or anything like that so I couldn't figure out what the charge was for.

I ran into another neighbour who made a comment about the price it was for sale for so I commented that I noticed it had a service charge and how odd that was. Neighbour gave me a funny look and said "yes, well we all pay the service charge" I said that we don't and have never been told anything about it or asked for payment. I asked her what it was for exactly and she didn't really know but kept saying "we all have to pay it".

Now, she has obviously been and spoken to some of the other neighbours about this and they are now annoyed that we don't pay when everyone else does. They want us to start paying it so that their share becomes less. However NOBODY knows what it is for, they all just pay it without questioning it. I said I wouldn't be paying anything unless they can tell me what it is for and what "service" I am receiving.

AIBU to think they have all been a bit foolish to pay so much money without questioning it and that they should stop paying it/find out what it's for rather than ask me to contribute!

To be clear, this is a fairly normal road with no communal areas and no "services" (other than the usual bin collections etc). Apparently the invoice just says "service charge" and does not specify exactly what service it is.

(I am currently the "bad neighbour" and need to make amends - may have to bribe the neighbourhood with homemade chocolate brownies then convince them to stage a mass refusal of payment and demand for refunds!)

surely since the new house for sale has this service charge it would be easier to ask estate agents?

Hiphopapotamus4 · 17/05/2017 06:54

So many replies since last night, I wasn't expecting this to become such a mystery!!

I'm out with the dog at the moment so will do a diagram when I get back and pop round next door to ask if I can see her invoice.

Just to clear things up (which may make this less intriguing). I have only been told by the neighbours that everyone pays but they had assumed I was paying it so they might be wrong. I know for a fact that six houses pay plus the one for sale makes 7, so there are 4 others who may or may not pay.

I bet it's a scam.
One of my friends has recently decided not to buy a new build because of the service charge included in the deeds. Apparently all new builds are like this now as the developers don't want to have to give the local council millions for adopting the communal land.

The council invoice will not tell you anything. It will be very vague and just say :'services'. One of the people with an actual invoice (not OP) will have to phone the Council and speak to that Dept to try and get a fuller explanation.

summ3r15coming · 17/05/2017 07:06

Surely if it was a management company then your neighbours would know this. They'd have had to have seen reports of where the money was being spent etc, wouldn't they?

ParadiseCity · 17/05/2017 07:07

MAYBE it is all owed to the OP dating back to some sort of archery tax for allowing their arrows to fly over your land or something. How amazing would that be?

MarciaBlaine · 17/05/2017 07:09

Intrigued!

Light69 · 17/05/2017 07:10

Service charges usually get added to your council tax so you maybe paying it and just not realise.

MollyHuaCha · 17/05/2017 07:11

Hope your investigation doesn't result in you having to pay from now on...

dailystuck71 · 17/05/2017 07:11

Place marking!!!!

Light69 · 17/05/2017 07:11

Check your banding and the price for your band, then check your council tax bill and you may find your bill is £500 more than the listed price. I pay a service charge and this is how we pay.

WunWun · 17/05/2017 07:13

Posting so I don't forget to check what the outcome was!

Oblomov17 · 17/05/2017 07:16

Suspect this will un-earth a whole heap of nonsense, that other residents will be resentful and that OP will wish she'd never mentioned it at all!!

metalmum15 · 17/05/2017 07:17

How bizarre. As a pp suggested, I would ring the estate agent and say I'm interested in the house but what is the service charge for.

I do wonder if it is a parish council precept , but it would appear on the main bill which arrives once a year , £50 is quite high but unheard of , then the neighbours assume that , that £50 is taken every month , so £500 ?

ImALurkerNotAFighter · 17/05/2017 07:19

She's surely up by now not placemarking

What time does the estate agents open?
You might want to get a friend to call, ie not from the same road ?
Or give different details

CoraPirbright · 17/05/2017 07:22

Ooh just think - you could be the hero who spots the scam and saves your neighbours loads of money!! It does seem a very high amount on top of your council tax (which, lets face it, isn't tuppence ha'penny anyway). Makes it an expensive place to live!!
