Is this black humour?

A local funeral director's hearse has the reg no:

N40 RET

I read this as 'no return' and black humour... Wonder what mourners make of it though.

Sister and her work colleagues think that's a bit of a stretch and it doesn't mean anything of the sort.

Who IBU?

Yeah, I think it's a bit of a reach to think that offensive.

Now if you think it dark humour that's different. The night my Granda died we had so much dark humour going on. He'd have loved a hearse with a jokey license plate Grin. We laughed and laughed. Granda would have loved that.

I have a dark sense of humour MIB I get but the one in the op I wouldn't think anything of! Not saying it's not not but it's not obvious if it is

That's a big leap.

Also it wouldn't be a sound business decision, since a huge portion of your customer base would find it highly offensive. So I would say the chances that it means that (or anything) are slim to none.

Me too user that's the first thing I saw, I remember when I used to care for a lady in sheltered housing two of her very elderly neighbours had a reg plate with DOA on it...it always made me snigger.

Most of the funeral homes in my area do this. The hearses and limos have vanity plates that have something to do with the name of the funeral home.

N40 RET - is either a very old numberplate/car or a vanity plate.

But no, I don't see it as "No Returns" - I agree with your sister that it's a big stretch to get that out of it!
