Is this black humour?

A local funeral director's hearse has the reg no:

N40 RET

I read this as 'no return' and black humour... Wonder what mourners make of it though.

Sister and her work colleagues think that's a bit of a stretch and it doesn't mean anything of the sort.

Who IBU?

No I think your sister is right - it's a bit of a leap

FeckinCrutches · 16/05/2017 00:09

You are!

PeaFaceMcgee · 16/05/2017 00:10

Does it mean anything do you think?

OP posts:
LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 16/05/2017 00:10

Why don't you phone and ask?

PeaFaceMcgee · 16/05/2017 00:11

Ha! Could do..

Of course by the time everyone has weighed in on the thread, you won't be any the wiser

BoldKitties · 16/05/2017 00:18

Yeah, I think it's a bit of a reach to think that offensive.

Now if you think it dark humour that's different. The night my Granda died we had so much dark humour going on. He'd have loved a hearse with a jokey license plate Grin. We laughed and laughed. Granda would have loved that.

caz323 · 16/05/2017 00:20

Nope Not getting it either Hmm

PeaFaceMcgee · 16/05/2017 00:21

Oh I'm not remotely offended, to clarify... It's funny (to me) if it is indeed what I think it is Grin

But I've not come across anyone else who thinks the same as me.

Our local hearse has the reg MIB.... always a dry smile...

ZilphasHatpin · 16/05/2017 00:23

Could it be the initials of the funeral directors?

PeaFaceMcgee · 16/05/2017 00:24
Grin

StickThatInYourPipe · 16/05/2017 00:24

I have no idea but this is the sort of thing that would make smile when I saw it and ultimately the reason I have a one way ticket to hell waiting

PeaFaceMcgee · 16/05/2017 00:25

Maybe Zilpha - though it's just occurred to me I have no idea which exact firm they are so can't look them up.

I have a dark sense of humour MIB I get but the one in the op I wouldn't think anything of! Not saying it's not not but it's not obvious if it is

YouWhatMate · 16/05/2017 00:33

That's a big leap.

Also it wouldn't be a sound business decision, since a huge portion of your customer base would find it highly offensive. So I would say the chances that it means that (or anything) are slim to none.

PeaFaceMcgee · 16/05/2017 00:36

It's definitely a personalised number plate isn't it.. hmmm..

keeplooking · 16/05/2017 00:46

MIB?? Sorry to be dense - it's late!

keeplooking · 16/05/2017 00:47

Oh, just got it! Men in Black Grin

user1491572121 · 16/05/2017 00:53

I read it as " No Regret"

salsmum · 16/05/2017 02:13

Me too user that's the first thing I saw, I remember when I used to care for a lady in sheltered housing two of her very elderly neighbours had a reg plate with DOA on it...it always made me snigger.

sashh · 16/05/2017 04:14

There is a funeral director in Yorkshire called Mr Box, all the cars are BOX 1, BOX 2 etc.

VanillaSugar · 16/05/2017 04:22

Well, at least it's more subtle than RIP.

steff13 · 16/05/2017 04:43

Most of the funeral homes in my area do this. The hearses and limos have vanity plates that have something to do with the name of the funeral home.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/05/2017 05:18

N40 RET - is either a very old numberplate/car or a vanity plate.

But no, I don't see it as "No Returns" - I agree with your sister that it's a big stretch to get that out of it!
