To be a bit uninspired by Lego's current range.

DD turns 6 in a few days. I spent my morning browsing the Lego shop in search of a present for her, and was totally uninspired.
She's not into superheroes or Star wars or Ghost busters, or elves, she hasn't seen the latest Disney film (Moana?)
I don't like the Friends sets much because of the figures, I prefer the traditional ones - and am a bit turned off by the cutesy cupcake-cafe and hair salon banality of it. And also you don't seem to get much for your money at all - half the pieces seem to be flowers or cutlery instead of bricks Hmm.

There were a scant handful of sets that I thought were OK, but hardly amazing (and one camper van one that was really good, but I think might be too complicated for her). All in all, very disappointing.

I'm thinking of trying to find some more inspiring discontinued sets on ebay for her instead - does anyone have any recommendations for brilliant sets that you can't get any more?

Or should I just give up and get her Playmobil instead?

Have you looked at the creator range? We have a cool set that turns from a dog into a bird and then something else. We also have a nice lighthouse set with a light up brick, comes with a boat and whale.

I think there will be nice sets but a bit more generic and less themed.

That is more the sort of thing I was looking for. I was looking in the actual Lego shop and they didn't have that.

I was thinking in terms of a bigger set really though - something that size is more what I would buy for other children's birthdays, rather than a main birthday present.

Dd is in to the DC. superhero girls range of toys (including Lego) if you've seen those?

Girls as in they're in high school not "superheroes for girls" iyswim.

I got dd (6) the 3in 1 treehouse and beach hut sets. They're fab. Proper figured, but a girl and a boy. Lots of little World play opportunities and she could manage most of the building herself.

I had similar reservations buying Lego for my six year old birthday this year.
I really did not want to buy another cupcake factory or a poodle parlour type set.

I got her the treetop playhouse in the end, it's really good! Yes it's Lego friends but not a cupcake or hairbow in sight!
Really detailed adventure camp, a lot of building to be done and (for a big Lego set) reasonable price.
My daughter really loves it, I would recommend.

The elves sets look really good. Not too girly and a nice choice of colours. My boys Lego is rather too much grey

DD loves her Scooby Doo Lego. There's also just boxes of Lego that you can buy, they come with a little book of ideas.

How about just a big box of Classic? My 9 year old DD got one for Christmas and loves it. What about some of the City range? We have loads of it.

Not much help, but check the age recommendations for the sets. I did the camper van, and it was bloody hard and fell apart during construction twice!

Oh sorry Light! I checked a few like Elsa's ice palace which said 6-12, but it probably depends on how much they're used to it. (I agree the big ship one looks a bit complex! and ££££)

The City range is good, DS has loads of it. I rather like the look of this one:

The fire engine ones have fire hoses that you can fit a small blue round piece onto and then fire it at the "flame" bits (which have a round base so they skitter off whatever building they're sitting on quite satisfyingly.)

Ooh, I love the Friends treetop house! That looks great! The other treehouse also looks good, but not as big.

How come the Lego shop didn't have half of these thing linked? I naively thought it would stock all the sets, will not be going back there again!

Because a lot of them are discontinued so no longer available from lego store.

Besides, most of the small common sets are often a lot cheaper elsewhere.

All of the Creator stuff is on the Lego website. I've just looked. Under the 'sets' tab.
