So people earning over £80k are wealthy, unless they are JC??

In an interview with Julie Etchingham, JC apparently said he's not wealthy, despite earning over £130k p/a, because of WHERE HE PUTS HIS MONEY (but he's not going in to that!). AIBU to think this is the most ridiculous statement he has managed to put out in recent weeks?

Given that Labour want the wealthiest in our society (earning over £80k) to pay more taxes, what Good Reason could he possibly have to not include himself in that bracket? Discuss :-)

Those who earn over 80,000 already pay more tax both as a proportion of their income and interns if actual amount than those on lower wages.

SleepFreeZone · 15/05/2017 17:39

My partner earns around £75k and we are not in the least bit wealthy. It's totally dependent on where you live and what your outgoings are.

usernamealreadytaken · 15/05/2017 17:39

Blimey I know what he actually said was that he was adequately paid for what he does. What his party says is that anybody earning over £80k is wealthy, regardless of what they do with that money, but Corbyn himself refused to say that he was wealthy because of what he does with his money (whatever that might be).

If falling in to the proposed >£80k bracket makes you wealthy, then he should just step up and say it. I would have more respect for him and the party if they couched it as 'we are all in this together, we will be leading the way by introducing this tax which we will all pay (no tax avoiding caveats, please!).

So I see he is looking to tax the top 5% and use it to save the NHS. Apparently he needs to raise £37,000,000,000 for it. That is a lot of money to squeeze out of anyone over 80k. I wonder will we see interest rates of 70%+ again. Corbyn and McDonnell could easily describe a 20+% rise as modest.

Can my contribution be to fix the thermostat at my local hospital. It has been broken at least 2 years. It gets hotter and hotter and hotter. You feel like you are suffering from dehydration and heat stroke by the time you get to see a doctor. The gas bill must be extortionate

MissEliza · 15/05/2017 17:47

It's very convenient that someone in the Labour Party decided 80k was the figure that made you wealthy, allowing its MPs to dodge the accusation of being wealthy.
I've just seen a picture of JC with Gerry Adams in 1983. What an appalling man he is.

brasty · 15/05/2017 17:48

Local hospitals are over heated because most people there are elderly ill people who feel the cold. Just like old people's homes.

PeterhouseMS · 15/05/2017 17:51

Just what this thread need - a link to the Daily Mail !

Hmm
Headofthehive55 · 15/05/2017 17:52

No it's more to do with poor control of heating.

Headofthehive55 · 15/05/2017 17:55

So please tell me, is tax dodging the same as minimising tax payable by Legal means?

If so why is that so despised.

HelenaDove · 15/05/2017 17:55

"When his personal tax return was published (on which he omitted some income of course), I don't recall seeing huge amounts of charity payments declared"

And if he did you would be accusing him of virtue signalling.

LapdanceShoeshine · 15/05/2017 17:57

badbadbunny

When his personal tax return was published (on which he omitted some income of course)

Which income did he omit?

brasty · 15/05/2017 17:58

HeadoftheHive Maybe in your local hospital. In mine which I have unfortunately been in a lot, it is needed.

LapdanceShoeshine · 15/05/2017 18:02

poshme

All those saying 'he has low expenses claims' :
JC claims 14/15 £159,106.86 + £421.77 travel
15/16 £148,301.92

Theresa May claims for same years:
14/15 £109,256.23
15/16 £115,617.83
So about £30/40k less each year.

So people earning over £80k are wealthy, unless they are JC??
MariposaNieve · 15/05/2017 18:02

stella
Earning 100k and giving 99k away, still makes you wealthy. People who aren't wealthy wouldn't have 99k to give away in the first place.

LapdanceShoeshine · 15/05/2017 18:03

Where did you find your figures, poshme?

I believe he only ever claims his office rent & legitimate office expenses

brasty · 15/05/2017 18:03

Theresa May as PM presumably gets Government Transport? Not comparable at all.

GretchenFranklin · 15/05/2017 18:07

This is a really silly thread, sorry.

Nobody thinks an income of 80k makes you 'wealthier'.

It does make you a higher earner i.e. more than most people who earn between £0 and £79,999.

When did MN become so rightwing anyway I blame PenisBeaker ?

LapdanceShoeshine · 15/05/2017 18:07

This is the breakdown of his expenses. He doesn't even claim for travel (of course being an OAP he has a freedom card but I'd be surprised if other over-65 London MPs don't claim for travel)

GretchenFranklin · 15/05/2017 18:08

ffs makes you wealthy I meant to say

MariposaNieve · 15/05/2017 18:11

Gretchen Well, I sure do!

poshme · 15/05/2017 18:13

Lapdance
From the IPSA website. The people who pay all the expenses.

www.theipsa.org.uk/mp-costs/your-mp/jeremy-corbyn/

They list all expenses.

kirinm · 15/05/2017 18:15

What a joke of a thread. Couldn't even start with getting what he'd said, right. This Corbyn bashing is so fucking pathetic. At least this man wants to make the country more equal and fund public services.

The tories couldn't give a fuck and their new announcement today under the guise of 'worker's rights' is their way of dealing with their absolute refusal to fund any social care but who cares, lets misquote Corbyn instead. It is beyond pathetic for people to a) get the policy wrong, and then b) speculate on how labour MPs - who support the policy - must be planning ways to avoid paying the increased rate of 45%. It isn't Corbyn with his family fortunes on an off-shore bloody island.

poshme · 15/05/2017 18:16

Anyway, he seemed to say that he wasn't wealthy cos of 'where he put his money'
The point is- he can choose where he puts it. Because he earns a very large amount. Which I suspect he is embarrassed by. But he still gets it.

brasty · 15/05/2017 18:16

LapdanceShoeshine That meme you have shared is rubbish. I have looked at the figures on the link someone else posted, and that meme is just lies

Istoletherainbow · 15/05/2017 18:18

One income of 60k. We're not wealthy at all. We live in a fairly small semi, outside of London and it's by no means a posh or upmarket area.

We don't go on expensive holidays. Actually, usually don't get a holiday. Maybe a couple of mini breaks. I hardly ever buy myself anything and nor does DP. We certainly won't starve! We're ok, but we're still always counting the pennies and are usually on the last few by the end of the month.

Once the mortgage, NI, tax, general household bills, student loan repayments have been paid, there's honestly not much left.
