So people earning over £80k are wealthy, unless they are JC??

In an interview with Julie Etchingham, JC apparently said he's not wealthy, despite earning over £130k p/a, because of WHERE HE PUTS HIS MONEY (but he's not going in to that!). AIBU to think this is the most ridiculous statement he has managed to put out in recent weeks?

Given that Labour want the wealthiest in our society (earning over £80k) to pay more taxes, what Good Reason could he possibly have to not include himself in that bracket? Discuss :-)

see, referring to people on £80k + as 'sickeningly wealthy' and the comment about raising their brats - that's nasty talk - that's no better than the higher earners who talk about benefit scroungers and people feigning disability. It's not a race to the bottom.

NoLotteryWinYet · 17/05/2017 13:24

if I wasn't working so much and paying a lot of tax, I could raise my own brats, it wouldn't be efficient for society though.

yes, arguments about who is working harder are just as silly. Thanks for my medal, and can I have another one for being keen to pay more tax, as long as it is well spent? Thanks.

Direct quote from John McDonnell in April

Mr McDonnell told the BBC: “We want to get a system that is fair, so the corporations and the rich pay their way more and that means ending the tax giveaways to the corporations and also those in inheritance tax, capital gains tax and the bankers’ levy.

“The rich will be above £70,000 to £80,000 a year.”

which by my reckoning includes every single MP; Conservative, Green and MOST IMPORTANTLY LABOUR WHO CALL EVERYONE ELSE RICH BUT REFUSE TO ADMIT THAT THEY ARE AMONG THE RICH THEMSELVES

not a huge fan of the current government, they've made an absolute mess of many things.

Why?
So you are saying that I, as a small business owner, have less stress and responsibility than staff on the factory floorHmm
I'll tell that to my husband when gets in at 2am like he did last night and we don't even earn £80k.

nursy1 · 17/05/2017 13:46

Someone earning 90k would be paying about 10 quid a week more. It's not a lot to ask is it?
When we were still working our combined income was over 150k. I would not have objected to paying more tax for public services. I was astounded that the Conservatives did not chose to raise the top tax bracket back to 50%

fanjo yes, like Jeremy Corbyn did in his interview with Julie Etchingham. Oh, wait...

When pressed on whether he considers himself wealthy, he said: “No, I’m not wealthy because of where I put the money, but I’m not going into that.”

If I earned £130k and put lots of money in to handbags, would that make me less wealthy?

Bangs head on desk...

But that's still his earned money and he's doing what he wants with it. What if someone buys drugs/gambles? They might be completely broke after a binge, but there is still the figure of X on their monthly pay cheque.

Furthermore I might not like JC's charities. Indeed, private schools are charities. What if someone donates the same amount of money as JC to St Ponsonby's? Do you consider JC and the private school donor to be the same?

He does pay an amount to charity, and claims tax relief on it. Not sure that is relevant in whether he admits to being wealthy or not - see my comment about handbags - it doesn't matter where you PUT the money, having it in the first place makes you wealthy, surely? It is his choice to make himself not wealthy if he gives all of the money away, but he is in the privileged position to decide he can give it away, as he has it in the first place!

Well, Fanjo, I'm not trying to convert you to anything, but I'm just a bit frustrated that you refuse to acknowledge that if someone has a bag of sweets and tips them down the drain, and another has a bag of sweets and gives them away, and another keeps the bag of sweets and scoffs the lot - they all started with a bag of sweets !!!!

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 17/05/2017 14:20

Your head is going to get very sore if you keep banging it on desk until you convert me to your right wing views btw

Believing that if someone earns 130k it maes them rich, wealthy, well to do whatever you want to call it is not a right wing view surely

Badbadbunny · 17/05/2017 14:20

He does pay an amount to charity, and claims tax relief on it.

A small amount at that (approx £6k if I remember rightly) compared to his total income of over £100k (unless that's another mistake he made on his tax return).

usernamealreadytaken · 17/05/2017 14:25

fanjo Well i assume he meant he lives modestly BUT HE STILL EARNS ABOUT TEN TIMES THE AVERAGE UK WAGE AND REFUSES TO ADMIT HE IS WEALTHY. If he lives modestly and gives it all away, well bully for him but he's not putting all that in to public services, is he, or he'd be crowing it from the rooftops. Instead, all the other people who may earn significantly less than he does, can pay for all that. FGS Hmm

For Fanjo the bottom line is Jeremy Corbyn can earn £1million a week and if he says he's not wealthy then he's not wealthy. On the other hand if someone works as, say, a senior air traffic controller (approx £80K) then they can go to hell, or, as she says earlier, can leave the country.
