To ask the school to put my 5 year old in a pullup for a school trip?

She's In reception and gets very easily distracted, right now she has a uti so her need is more urgent than normal, when we go on trips and things we use pull-ups as a safety net.

AIBU to ask the school to do the same?
She can put a dry on on herself so teachers will not have to do anything extra, it's extremely unlikely she will poop.

Surely she would be over a UTI by then?!

I'm not sure, the antibiotics don't end until the week after.

I'd like a plan in place.

NHS site says they clear up within 24-48 hours.

If you are worried is there any chance you can go on the school trip with her? My daughter used to have a bowel condition and I was allowed to go on trips incase she had accidents.

Is it the uti or are there other issues, it seems odd that you would hunk that far ahead

LorLorr2 · 14/05/2017 16:52

You often have to take medication beyond the time where you're actually better.

I think your best bet is it speak to the teacher, and ask what their opinion is and whether it'll be possible to take her to the loo enough or if they would prefer she stayed behind. I'm sure they would want her to come along though!

JennyjENjENJenny · 14/05/2017 16:56

It's been 4 days already Caul, she still smells 'fishy'.

Quartz she's been admitted to hospital for a UTI before. No other issues i'm just expecting the worst. when she gets them she gets them bad.

@JennyjENjENJenny I would definitely be keeping her off for the trip, and maybe a couple of days of normal school if she gets them badly. She needs to rest, and you need to be keeping up with the fluids routine [as I am sure you know]. Hope she feels better soon.

She may well be better by the 23rd but I would put her in one anyway and speak to the teacher. DD2 (now 10) suffered with uti's and urgency issues until the last year.

I gave her pull ups for a couple of longer trips but mainly because I knew she would fall asleep on the bus home and there was a bigger chance she would wee shen asleep.

I know from a GP friend that wiping in the wrong direction can cause UTIs.

DissonantInterval · 14/05/2017 17:13

Is she ok about the idea of a pull up? If so, can she wear own clothes on the day? If she can, harem pants might be good for not showing the 'bulk' of the pull up.

Has DD had a scan? I thought the criteria for children was that more than one UTI and they should have one to see if there is any reason that could be causing them?

I had a LOT of UTI's as a kid but it was back in the day when scans weren't available and my parent's weren't on the ball when it came to our health. In adulthood a scan found a narrowing at the point where the kidney meets the ureter causing urine to flow back into the kidney. Apparently this isn't at all uncommon and it might be that your DD needs a low dose prophylactic antibiotic each day to prevent any more infections. Worth looking into if it's not already been suggested. UTI's are utterly miserable and even if you aren't unwell with them the constantly needing the loo and being uncomfortable are rubbish.

I'd hope by 23rd DD will be all recovered though.

JennyjENjENJenny · 14/05/2017 17:15

No scan Dis but it's certainly something I'm going to ask for if this happens again.

In your shoes I'd ask the teacher if you can go as a chaperone. That would help the teacher out, you could keep an eye on your DD, and she wouldn't have to worry about other children noticing her underwear or accidentally wetting herself.

DissonantInterval · 14/05/2017 17:18

Jenny if she's had more than 2 or 3 I'd definitely ask your GP to refer her to urology. It could be as simple as not wiping from front to back (a lot of UTI's are caused by e.coli bacteria from the anus getting into the urethra) but it could be something more to do with the actual 'plumbing' as it were and it would be good to rule that out.

JennyjENjENJenny · 14/05/2017 17:44

Thank you all.

Dis I've often thought that there might be a bigger problem but potty training wise she was very quick to get it.

I have a 5 year old in reception, if he needed it then I would put him in one.

I'm worried that I'll have to do it when my daughter starts reception in September. She'll be 4 in July and isn't trained fully. I can't remember the last time she was dry throughout twelve whole day! Even though we've tried a billion things!
