to want to live somewhere friendly, cheapish

Can't give too much detail as will out myself ...

I live in a town in the South, moved here 5 years ago. Its a bit snobby and expensive on the one hand, but lots of poverty and degradation on the other. Plus I'm finding it pretty cold, unfriendly, boring.

Need to be somewhere cheap (to rent or at a push maybe buy). Just friendlyish, cheap, a bit of culture, access to the countryside! Any thoughts?

I hope its not too pertinent a question, just got that desperate feeling on a Saturday afternoon, but which has been growing for weeks

I've just moved to the north east (Gateshead) as I couldn't afford to live in my 'naice' town in Yorkshire.
I really really like it.

Surely you need to look for jobs and where they are as opposed to simply somewhere to live?

Norfolk! Lovely villages, lots of countryside, not hard to avoid snobby places. Majority of people are friendly, low crime rates, easy access to beaches and lovely walks. I love it, best thing I ever did!

Bristol is so friendly and has culture and things to do. It's not cheap compared to other places but I support myself and my two kids here on a very average wage just fine.

Devorak having some locations in mind to base job hunting on is surely also a good way to go

I've learnt alot living here, and there have been a couple of good things (though some awful).

But also feel its been a mistake and I'll never be happy here.

The job thing isn't important. Am educated low-wage wherever I am.

I'm from the NE originally. We have a lot of friendly areas around that region. (Lovely beaches and countryside too).

Glasgow never met a visitor who hasn't commented on what a friendly city it is!

Dundee, has lots going for it.

We are in a very cheap part of Scotland, it's lovely and friendly, beautiful countryside. The downsides are very little in the way of cultural life, and some people have views and attitudes from the 1970s.

I live in south Wales valleys it's very very friendly, community minded and extremely cheap!

Leeds, Manchester or Sheffield or the surrounding areas have everything you want.

Another vote for Bristol. There are some parts that aren't too expensive and it really is lovely.

Whitley Bay in the North East. Stunning houses, lovely and cheap. Great community feel, gorgeous beaches, quirky caffs, cinemas, markets here or nearby. Newcastle and Gateshead are a Metro ride away for galleries, gigs and great theatre.

Another vote for the North East here, friendly people, lovely countryside, cheap housing. Quite a lot colder than the south though (we still have the heating on but I am a southern wuss!)

I live in a lovely semi rural location, 15 minutes from a lovely tourist city, 25 minutes to another big city, loads of countryside on the doorstep. You can snap up houses in our village to buy or rent at far less than market price because HS2 will be running right through us when they do phase 2. It'll still be a lovely place to live for at least the next 10 years

Don't move to Cambridge it's neither friendly nor cheap!
