AIBU to refuse access to neighbours builders?

we live in a row of terraces, there is no direct access to neighbours back garden so they sent their builders round to us to ask if they could use our side entrance and garden to take stuff through and pass over the fence. (We are the end house)
The last time they did this we agreed and the builders were climbing over the fence, moving the kids garden toys to boost themselves over. They took down the washing I had out leaving it on the patio ground, ripped the trampoline netting and broke part of the fence. They took hours doing this so I was unable to let my dog or toddler into the garden to play.
They've knocked to ask again but AIBU to say no? It's a weekend and my kids want to be able to use the garden not be cooped up all day. They've already trashed stuff and I just don't want them in my garden all day again. I've told them to take the stuff through the neighbours house as there is a straight passage from front to back. I don't want to fall out with the neighbours but why should I be inconvenienced every time they want to do some home improvements?

yanbu

PaintingByNumbers · 13/05/2017 09:55

what do your deeds/lease say? often terraces have right of access for this kind of thing

SouthWindsWesterly · 13/05/2017 09:55

Just say no and cite the reasons above. Personally I would have asked the neighbour to pay for the damage done

PoopyPanda · 13/05/2017 09:56

YANBU. If they wanted to use your route then they shouldn't have caused damage to your property, they've reaped what they've sown. I wouldn't let them through after that behaviour either.

TheWitTank · 13/05/2017 09:57

No and reasons why. I also would have asked for replacement of the net and fence repairs.

LadyPW · 13/05/2017 09:57

Say no and tell them why. Perfectly reasonable.

MoreThanUs · 13/05/2017 09:57

I would definitely say no. If they want access to your garden I would want the neighbours to come round themselves (who on earth sends their builders round?!) and I would want notice.

MidniteScribbler · 13/05/2017 09:58

YANBU and I would tell them why.

MoreThanUs · 13/05/2017 09:58

And I'd want the previous damage paid for before I let anyone back through.

VerySadInside · 13/05/2017 09:58

Was the last time for the same neighbours/builders?

If so did they compensate for the damage?

If yes then I'd let them but ask for £100 deposit against further damage.

MyCalmX · 13/05/2017 09:59

Yanbu. Your neighbours should have asked you first.

YellowDinosaur · 13/05/2017 09:59

Yanbu. There is no way I'd allow this after what happened last time.

Plus, the fact that they sent the builders to ask rather than having the decency to ask themselves would make me even more included to say no!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 13/05/2017 10:00

Of course you can say no and the reasons why.

JensenAcklesUndercrackers · 13/05/2017 10:03

Its the same builders as last time. Neighbours have just been round to ask, I've said no again and they called me a selfish cock. DH thinks we should just say yes for an easy life.

Neighbours don't want builders traipsing through their house, there is nothing on my rental agreement to say I have to let them have access so I'm going to hold firm.

BiddyPop · 13/05/2017 10:06

Do the neighbours know what went wrong the last time?

Oscillationss · 13/05/2017 10:06

Well done for standing your ground. They aren't doing much to persuade you to change your mind by calling you names!

SoupDragon · 13/05/2017 10:06

Did you explain why?

Staypuff · 13/05/2017 10:07

Well done op. Shame your dh is trying to bend over. So they ruin your things and are rude to you and he thinks you should drop the and bend over? No way.

GolyHuacamole · 13/05/2017 10:08

As long as said why you were refusing access YANBU.

CookieLady · 13/05/2017 10:09

They called you "a selfish cock"?! Hell no. Arshehats. Angry

OlafLovesAnna · 13/05/2017 10:09

He's insulted you as well as letting his builders trash your garden?! All because he prefers not to inconvenience himself by letting them come through his house?

Fuck that! He could whistle as I far as I would be concerned, your DH is wrong, I think if you give this neighbour an inch he'll take a mile.

You also don't want any damage to a rental property as that could impact your deposit etc.

FizzyGreenWater · 13/05/2017 10:09

Wow, they really said that?!

No way would I be speaking to them again, and I'd be letting them know that if they want favours, best hire builders who don't break stuff.

And that if they used intimidating language to me again then I'd be getting in touch with the council to complain about damage to property and harassment during their building works.

WeAllHaveWings · 13/05/2017 10:10

Tell them the reasons why and no for today as there has been no notice. But if they pay for a properly installed, lockable (from your side) gate to prevent further damage then it is ok in future as long as they give you notice you can try to accommodate. This will prevent any further damage.

Why did the feel the need to take your washing down?

WeAllHaveWings · 13/05/2017 10:11

Ah, just seen its rental, might complicate things.
