Ok, I know the general gist that Conservatives look after the rich and punish the poor and Labour are fairer to the underdog and the poorer.

Apart from this though I don't know much about politics.
I have voted in the past, but local elections Labour will always win, so my vote doesn't change anything, iyswim.
In GE if I've been bothered to vote I just voted labour.

I look at which would be better for us, but there isn't a party that's better than the other.
So looking towards society in general which party is best to vote for and why?
I don't just mean what they say in a manifesto or campaign as we all know that politicians are a lying set of bastards. I mean more widely iyswim.

Yes. Really.

I'm a proud floating voter. I liked Thatcher. I loved Blair (first 2 terms). Right now, I can't see an option besides May. If we weren't leaving the EU then I may be more undecided but we are and to make the best of the looming disaster we need a strong leader. Sadly, any other policy (of which I like some of LAbours and some of the Cons.) is secondary.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 12/05/2017 14:50

Do you loathe poor people and think they all deserve to die, but feel it would be a social faux pas to say so? If so, vote for anyone else and stop Labour getting in.

Oh please.

Do get of your high horse and grow up.

Jupitar · 12/05/2017 14:59

I'm voting Conservative because the idea of Corbyn negotiating a deal for us getting out of the EU or running the country frightens me.

But Corbyn has always been and Euro sceptic and May has always been pro eu, so just based i that I'd expect him to have a better idea of what he wants out of it and how to get it. May has already lied saying she needs everyone to vote for her so that she can negotiate better with the Eu, this is bollox the eu don't care how many people vote for her.

gillybeanz · 12/05/2017 15:04

Now, that's it just what Devorak said.
I'd never normally consider conservative as their main principles go against mine, but Brexit.
Is Theresa May our only option for the best deal, this is what I don't understand.
As Piglet stated any party can promise anything on paper.

It seems my problem is getting past the propaganda (not that I believe it) and getting to the truth, being able to surmise what they really mean.

I just heard Corbyn speaking about appointing a minister for peace, but not being a pacifist. Boris Johnson saying we'll have no defence for our country. It sounds like playground banter, but where's the truth.

SemiNormal · 12/05/2017 15:07

I don't know who I am voting for but I know it won't be Conservative due to their stance on fox hunting. I cannot be complicit in that.
I won't be voting Labour because of my dislike of Corbyn and the shambles that is Diane Abbott.
Ukip are a mess right now and pretty much a non-party!
Possibly Lib Dems, Green, Plaid Cymru, other ...

Radishal · 12/05/2017 15:08

"Do you want the NHS? If so, vote Labour.

Do you loathe poor people and think they all deserve to die, but feel it would be a social faux pas to say so? If so, vote for anyone else and stop Labour getting in."

Op, don't let yourself be manipulated by childishness.

Jupitar · 12/05/2017 15:15

Refusing to bomb other countries just because they won't do what we want is not the same as not being able to defend ourselves.
If you use up loads of bullets going round shooting everyone you'll have less left if you need to defend yourself. Plus if you don't go round attacking everyone then they're less likely to attack you.

CheesyCrust · 12/05/2017 15:20

I fucking hate poor people and foxes but no more so than trade unions and train drivers.

How should I vote?

LadyPW · 12/05/2017 15:50

If you can't decide yourself by reading their various manifestos in due course then you probably shouldn't be voting at all. If this is just another promoting one party over another (but trying to be subtle about it) then post on one of the many threads already in existence.
And this is supposed to be AIBU not a general chat thread.....

Notfastjustfurious · 12/05/2017 16:15

I just tried the isidewith website mentioned further upthread and got LibDem which surprised me. I did give them my vote in the just passed local elections but that was for the actual councillor as opposed to the party. Interesting site though and worth a look if you're lost.

InDubiousBattle · 12/05/2017 16:24

It is isn't it notfast. I came out with SNP and Lib Dems at the top and I would probably consider myself a Labour voter (although I have voted Lib Dem in the past). I was surprised how low my 'score' for labour was tbh. Reassured that the BNP and UKIP were very low.

Fortybingowings · 12/05/2017 16:24

Labour because the Tories are collapsing the NHS on purpose in order to effect privatisation. But rather than being upfront and honest about this, they are blaming fat cat doctors, lazy nurses, agency over spends on temporary staff etc.
But this is an echo chamber (google it). Tory voters won't post on forums mostly. They quietly vote, hence the likely landslide victory

elmo1980 · 12/05/2017 16:44

That isidewith.com website is very interesting - I always thought I was tory but according to that they come at the bottom for me. I wonder how accurate it is.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 12/05/2017 16:48

I'm voting conservative because Labour are going to DISARM THIS COUNTRY

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 12/05/2017 16:50

I wonder how accurate it is.

Without manifesto I'm not sure how helpful it would be.

DoloresTheRunawayTrain · 12/05/2017 17:20

Thanks to budget cuts to all sectors of the military we have ships sitting in dock because there isn't the fuel to put in them and planes being sent up with no missiles. This is due to the privatisation of many sectors associated with the military and now parts can only be ordered when they reach a certain volume threshold so if it's a small but vital part that leaves a plane grounded.
Budget cuts have ALREADY DISARMED THIS COUNTRY.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 12/05/2017 17:22

There are already a load of threads about this of you want to get a view.

But I hope you won't be basing your decision on a load of internet randomers, also bear in mind this site is largely a left wing echo chamber so it's fairly biased

gillybeanz · 12/05/2017 21:07

Thank you Livia
No, I won't base my vote on this, but did think I'd get a general view to work from.

Thanks to the posters who suggested isidewith, I'm going to have a look, I had to go to work earlier.

LadyPW Thank you for that. Believe it or not, the reason for the thread was to gain an insight to help me form my own opinion.

So what about the other parties, do they stand a chance? These are the bits I don't mind admitting to not understanding.
Do all the others have enough seats and what generally do they represent, media talk and propaganda aside.

OP posts:
KittyWindbag · 12/05/2017 21:14

Why don't you read their manifestos? I know you think they're not to be trusted, but why do you think strangers on the internet have more value in their opinions than the one you can forge off doing your own research?

'The truth' is abstract, really. You have one party who've been in power for 7 years telling you they're right. All the other parties are going to tell you they can do better. Vote for the ideals you believe in.

Yabbadabbo2 · 12/05/2017 21:29

Conservative, so we can continue to build an economy where relaince on the state for handouts is diminshed. Labour want to make the rich poorer not the poor richer(otherwise they'll lose that vote).

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 12/05/2017 22:45

Like Kitty said - read the manifestos, in fact read as much as you can from any source you can. Is this the first time you voted? Tbh you owe it to yourself to do proper research rather than just asking a load of randoms what the parties stand for.

And if you can't work your way through the propaganda, what makes you think that MN posters can?

The truth sadly isn't out there but research and then vote for the ideals nearest to yours.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 12/05/2017 22:46

But a talk forum (and one with a general political bias) isn't going to give you the answers that you are looking for

InDubiousBattle · 13/05/2017 08:10

Why don't you read their manifestos? I don't think they've even been published yet.
