To think it's a bit twee for C4's Super Vet to call animals' owners their 'parents'?

Every time he says it I'm a bit Hmm

Also, how the fuck do these people afford all this treatment? It's like tens of thousands of pounds' worth! Does pet insurance really cover that much?

Mummy to Mouse, Granny to Toby Grin

I'm not a fan of Noel, I don't believe in a lot of his 'pioneering' surgery, animals don't have the ability to think 'oh I'm in pain now, but this will fix me in 2 months'.

zukiecat · 11/05/2017 22:54

This is my Miley, she's my baby and I am her Mummy

I adore her, she's the sweetest, gentlest cat in the world, she adores me as much as I adore her Smile

pandarific · 11/05/2017 23:01

YABU. It's adorable.

(Mummy to two little cats.)

Fanciedachange17 · 11/05/2017 23:04

YANBU. But then I'm a country lass. Animals are animals. You may love them but you are not their "mummy" or "daddy" and you sound fucking ridiculous saying it. When you are dead in your living room most of the buggers will eat you. They don't love you. They respond to the conditioning they have had and the regular feeding they get. Save your love for humans.

OhTheRoses · 11/05/2017 23:12

Well he's my physio's BIL and I drive past him every day.

He's not our vet but our vet calls me xx's mummy which is a heck of a lot better than dd's last hospital trip where I was addressed as "you xx's mum" or plain "mum" in a way that made me feel inferior.

Gingersstuff · 11/05/2017 23:13

I am "mummy" to 4 dogs, they absolutely do love me, I give not one shit whether I sound fucking ridiculous or not. Bigger things to worry about, quite honestly.

SouthWestmom · 11/05/2017 23:14

Mmmm I don't know. I was talking to the vet about cat being possible allergic to stuff and told her it runs in the family as me and dd have hay fever and allergies Blush

IloveBanff · 11/05/2017 23:16

Noeuf Shock

Ev1lEdna · 11/05/2017 23:18

I like to think of myself as my cat's mum despite it being a bit daft. She, on the other hand, regards me as her minion.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/05/2017 23:25

I have 2 cats and I call myself their mummy and if that makes me twee then so be it. My DP has a cat as well and sometimes refers to himself as his dad. Guess we are both bonkers but I've always had pets and always thought of them as part of the family instead of just pets.

zukiecat · 11/05/2017 23:50

I don't care if people think I'm ridiculous

I adore my furbabies, and apart from my DC, they are the most precious things in my life

Right now, I have three of them on my bed purring their heads off

yellowbroccoli · 12/05/2017 00:49

Twice this thread has made me crack up laughing! One at noeuf and once at the PP who said about giving birth to dogs Grin
It's very rare that something makes me laugh online so well done Wink
Yes I am my cats mummy and my DH her adopted daddy as she came first

CheeseQueen · 12/05/2017 01:01

YANBU. I get this shit on my FB all the time.
"Look what outfit mummy bought me."
"Jumped on Daddy this morning when getting up."
It's. A. DOG.
You're blatantly not its parent. Get a grip and a sense of reality.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 12/05/2017 01:01

Parents here. Human and pet parents. Mummy and daddy to all.

I have a cat. I adore her. She's the best cat in the world. But I'm her owner

We own a house, own a car , own a fridge. But we have dogs and cats, we do not own them.

peachgreen · 12/05/2017 01:06

YANBU. It's ridiculous.

In general I am pretty live and let live but every time I see someone referring to their pets as their children it drives me wild. Might be because not long after my miscarriage a friend said she understood how I felt because she could imagine what it would feel like to lose her cat. Hmm

WiddlinDiddling · 12/05/2017 01:20

We refer to one another as our dogs Mummy and Daddy because we find that amusing - however they are not child substitutes nor do we think of them as children exactly but they ARE family.

As far as a dog is concerned, the owners are sthe primary care givers and very much do fall into a parental role.

We make the decisions about whats safe, whats not safe, we provide the fun, the toys, the food, the equipment, the housing.... we determine where they can go and where they cannot.. clean up poo and pee and vom, are legally responsible for their actions/damage...

Very similar to parenting small children really!

That said, most small children are not shouting at wild rats under the shed in the rain at 1am!... (he's come in now. We don't use our shouty voices at 1am).

Frankly if more people saw themselves as a 'parent' rather than some sort of military style leader or ruler of the universe 'Master', we would have FAR fewer dog behaviour problems than we currently see.

That doesn't mean we should forget our dogs are dogs, tehy ARE dogs - but any good parent recognises their charges needs, desires, skill set and personality and provides for them and manages them as necessary.
So yes, I am my dogs parent, but no, they are not my children. Something I suspect you can't understand until you have dogs!

TrinityTaylor · 12/05/2017 01:30

i think it's offensive because you then have people saying things like their dog is as important as a child and that they understand what it's like the lose a child because their dog died.

NO. JUST NO.

TrinityTaylor · 12/05/2017 01:33

Widdlin - I've had dogs my whole life. And horses, and cats, and rabbits to varying degrees. I have my own dog and cat now. But I still have no fucking clue what you're on about when you say you're your dogs parent. I'm a parent to my daughters, I gave birth to them.
I love my pets to bits and pieces, I'd do pretty much anything for them. But they are animals. Not humans who came out of my body.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/05/2017 01:36

But they are their parents. The fact that they're a different species and didn't give birth to them makes no difference.

When You adopt a pet you're the one who,
guides, provides.
loves unconditionally, comforts, nurtures, gives attention, cuddles. Resaurrance.
As far as I'm concerned. That makes them a parent

TrinityTaylor · 12/05/2017 01:39

The fact that they're a different species and didn't give birth to them makes no difference.

honestly listen to yourself.

You really think it's the same? Try having a very very ill child. Then you'll know the difference.

walmo · 12/05/2017 02:06

I am definitely not my cats mummy.

She doesn't care though, she still sends me and the rest of the family birthday cards.

Twitchingdog · 12/05/2017 02:13

When I see the cost of animal care I always thank my lucky stars for NHS . We have no idea how much are health care cost till we go to vets . 40 quid just to seethe normal him. The cost of the drugs . The cost and getting there to specialist.
A pinEd broken leg of a dog is at least 10000 Moreally if things go wrong . Imagine finding that kind of money for a child .
Thank God for NHS .

OliviaStabler · 12/05/2017 04:32

I am my cats mummy. I also call myself her mummsy wummsy at times Grin At my vets each animal is called by their name with the owners surname.

Not 'twee' at all.

ProudConservative · 12/05/2017 04:41

I don't like it but whenever I hear people refer to themselves as parents of pets, I ignore it as they obviously have something missing in their lives.

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2017 05:34

I love Noel. I don't mind what he calls the owners.

I have a cat. I am fairly sure she thinks I am her Mum. Grin
