Are there any farmers out there?

It's probably an insane idea, so if you know about these things, please advise.

Thank you.

Meant also to say that Dexters are the smallest native breed of cattle

How about a pet sheep? Karl and Susan Kennedy in Neighbours had one in their front garden called Casserole didn't they?

YNB totally U, another vote for Dexters.
But. get them as small calves and rear them yourself, as they have a tendency to be wild compared to other breeds. Like Shetland sheep or Alpine goats, compared to the more gentle breeds.

Also, its a breed characteristic that they are extremely maternal. That means they make great mothers, and that includes if they perceive a threat to the calf they wont give you the benefit of the doubt.

Dont do it if you have no experience of similar animals such as goats.
Dont put them in with horses for company, its risky for the horses. Theres a disease called New Forest disease (myotonia) that affects their eyes, and they catch if from cows.

If anyone is considering pigs, keeping only one is cruel. They need interaction with others.

For sheep, google Vallais Blacknose. They're a Swiss breed, but there are a few breeders in the UK. They're absolutely adorable, with long curly wool and black ears and noses.

BUT, remember, keeping livestock is a lot harder than having a cat or dog. There are a ton of rules and regulations, and the animal's welfare is paramount. It's not something to do on a whim, just because the animal looks cute.
Find a pig/goat/sheep keeping course, buy books and do lots of research before getting any animals, and don't buy just one of an animal that's used to living in a herd.

Oh, and micro pigs don't exist. Kune Kunes are smaller, but other pigs get huge.

Make sure you don't live near David Cameron.

Dexters can be very friendly, but they can also be escape artists, especially when young, so you need to ensure your land is well fenced. I think having 3/4 would be better than 2 so that if something happens to one, the other is not alone.

Also do bear in mind they will need to be TB tested, and if positive or inconclusive, they may have to be killed, which is distressing enough with dairy cows, let alone with a family pet.

They can also get pretty noisy if they are unhappy about something!

I want a whole mini farm!

I grew up around farm animals & I definitely understand why you would want to do this, cows can be great, but practically speaking they need a herd & are just too big, they can also be evil bastards when they feel like it & are just. To big to argue with when they get that way.

Get a goat or 2

OP on the one hand I think you're being sensible asking for advice, on the other hand, the tone of some of your comments suggests you're just looking for something "charming" and fun but have little or no expertise. Keeping livestock is a serious, mucky 365 days a year job. Even if you have the land and the money to do it, you have to be really committed to learning about animal husbandry and not seeing farm animals as pets. They aren't, even a domesticated sheep or goat is not the same as a cat or dog.
Lots of people do learn from scratch of course, but please don't get a cow. Lots of good advice above. Cows are big, not very clever and too big to push around. Not a good place to start keeping livestock.
