Interviewer is 30 mins late for my interview. AIBU to leave?

I arrived for my interview at 1:30. It was due to start at 1:45pm. It's in a hospital.

I've been sat here almost an hour now. If it gets to 2:45pm, Can I walk out saying I will no longer have time to attend?

I'd factored in an hour for the interview. But even if I go to the reception area now and chase up where the interviewer is, I won't really have time to complete the interview as I need to get my son from after school club. There's absolutely no one who can get him for me.

Is this reasonable or would it rule me out of the job completely?

If I got the job of course I would have proper childcare in place, but I was expecting to be finished no later than 2:45pm (an hour after starting time).

Don't waste any more time. Politely explain that you have another commitment to get to and would appreciate a call from the interviewer to rearrange.
Maybe follow it up with an email to the interviewer to apologise for leaving, but looking forward to meeting them at a rearranged time.

Itsnotwhatyouare · 10/05/2017 15:02

They're an hour and a half behind schedule. If I'd been told that I could have made arrangements but it's too late now.

Perhaps it's a test of the candidates initiative? To see who handles the situation with appropriate assertiveness? Wink

blackcherries · 10/05/2017 15:12

If it was me I'd have asked before now, make sure there's no issue and find out if there is a definite delay. Then when I absolutely had to go, ask them to reschedule it for tomorrow/whenever.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/05/2017 15:17

Obviously I don't know your circs, ie.
Whether or not you're signing on. I don't want to know. Its none of my business. However this is where the one rule for one and another rule for another comes into play.
Assuming for 1 minute you are in receipt of benefits and you walk out.
You'll be greeted with a sanction. Yet its perfectly 'acceptable' for you to be kept waiting. Just the way the world is sadly.

PippaFawcett · 10/05/2017 15:21

An hour and a half behind schedule is appalling. 10 minutes maybe, but it shows a complete lack of organisation and ability to schedule properly. If you aren't bothered about the job then I would just leave.

amusedbush · 10/05/2017 15:23

It's for a counselling position.

I would have guessed it was for a GP position - sounds about right for any GP surgery I've attended Grin

GrandDesespoir · 10/05/2017 15:29

Are/were you definitely waiting in the right place?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 10/05/2017 15:41

An hour and a half behind schedule? Dear lord! It's not uncommon for interviews to run over or the person scheduling to forget to factor in 5 mins for the interviewer to get to the loo, but that's ridiculous.

Tell the receptionist you're going then follow up with an apologetic, but factual, email.

Jaxhog · 10/05/2017 15:50

It's outrageous that they didn't tell you immediately that the interviews were running that late. This little respect would make this a place I wouldn't want to work. Leave now.

mommybunny · 10/05/2017 15:51

If yo're still reading this OP, don't get into the reason why you had to leave early - it's no one's business. If you're going for a counselling role, it's totally plausible that you could have had to leave because you had a patient waiting for you in your current job!

LapinR0se · 10/05/2017 15:52

Yes exactly. You just say I'm terribly sorry but I have another appointment that I cannot reschedule.

carefreeeee · 10/05/2017 16:05

Typical arrogant doctor behaviour I'd say! Their time more important than anyone else's.

There may be a good reason for being late but you should have been kept informed and they should have offered you a chance to rearrange without affecting your chances of being offered the job.

ThePants999 · 10/05/2017 16:13

I sometimes interview. If I were somehow running this ludicrously late (!?) and I found a candidate had left when I finally got to them, I wouldn't hold it against them in the slightest.

Sidge · 10/05/2017 16:19

A counselling position in a hospital? So unlikely to involve any doctors TBH. So let's stop with the doctor bashing shall we?

OP that sucks - shows poor organisational skills and lack of communication. I wouldn't blame you one bit for leaving and making it quite clear (politely of course!) why you had to go.

PippaFawcett · 10/05/2017 19:59

How was it left with them, OP?

Trifleorbust · 10/05/2017 20:01

I would ask why they were so late before leaving. It might be beyond their control.

Sharimara · 10/05/2017 20:02

They've personally rang me apologising and arranged for me to come in on Friday.

Sharimara · 10/05/2017 20:02

Sorry. Name changed.

ForalltheSaints · 10/05/2017 20:06

Complain about this. It is in my opinion a breach of normal equality policies- you could have an elderly relative to care for, even if you have no children of school age. Rude not to tell you they are late and offer another time.

The only time I ever had an interview running late, I was offered the option to come back at a specific time later in the day. Which I accepted and went to look at the local property options.

PippaFawcett · 10/05/2017 20:09

Good luck on Friday. If only you could rock up an hour and a half late!

ecuse · 10/05/2017 20:16

I interview people. If I turned up an hour and a half late (whether or not I had passed ahead a message to explain, but DEFINITELY if I hadn't) I would apologise profusely and offer them an alternative date without holding it against them. It would be OUTRAGEOUS if they did otherwise (although I work in a corporate environment and have no experience of NHS).

amusedbush · 10/05/2017 20:21

Sidge

I was mostly joking. Not bashing at all!

Sidge · 10/05/2017 21:15
