About Jeremy Corbyn's campaign launch

The warm up act was Hayley Cropper & she was very good - "Labour give a toss about people" etc.

......and then JC came on......

It was very much like he was imagining the beginnings of his communist utopia.

He's basically declared a personal war on the very people who contribute the most to the tax take & wealth of the country.

I get it that the tax avoidance etc should be tackled & stamped out - but just a blanket 'going after the wealthy' is surely counterproductive?

They'll just leave!
And take their money with them.
Won't they...??!!

Did they have a magic money tree planting ceremony & galloping unicorns too? Grin

Charmageddon · 09/05/2017 12:03
Grin No!

I don't think they'll all leave as a recent thread indicated (many people over the 80k mark were saying they would stay and contribute more to the pubic purse). Of course some will, but this " ohh don't piss off the rich - we're lost without them" is just bollocks. There is no going after the wealthy, it is increasing the tax over a certain threshold, and by increasing it for those who are already struggling you'd just be magnifying the problem even further.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/05/2017 12:12

was Corbyn surrounded by his devoted followers with their manic smiles yet able to look concerned and angst ridden at the same time

his personal war won't worry many as it is a dwindling few who still believe he will win the election

I am guessing huge pay rise for nurses and teachers will soon be announced

needmorespace · 09/05/2017 12:16

Would there be anything wrong with announcing pay rises for teachers and nurses?
Or are decent salaries only deserved by bankers and CEOs?

PizzaPower · 09/05/2017 12:17

Even if the took the tax rate to 90% for over £80k, the income still wouldn't get anywhere near all the promises been made.
Yes, we need to tax more at the higher level, but the sums have massive gaps in them.

Charmageddon · 09/05/2017 12:21

CuppaTea, it's not so much about his wanting to tax more etc, but more about the whole tone and atmosphere of today's launch - it was honestly like he believed he was spearheading a revolution.

was Corbyn surrounded by his devoted followers with their manic smiles yet able to look concerned and angst ridden at the same time

Yes! That's exactly what is was like!
With lots of whooping at relevant points.

OP posts:
EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/05/2017 12:21

oh please

it was a comment on how desperate they will get with their promises from the money they can spend

who really apart from very few believes nurses and teachers don't deserve a good wage

coldcanary · 09/05/2017 12:23

Has anyone else noticed that whenever Keir Starmer has to stand near Corbyn he looks like someone has stapled his smile to his face? For someone who usually looks relaxed and composed it's quite unnerving..

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/05/2017 12:25

hope you joined in with the whooping Charmageddon

because if you didn't you obviously don't care about the poor, those with disabilities, the NHS, those with mental health issues , every child's education - lets face it you probably don't care about ANYONE but yourself

ShatnersWig · 09/05/2017 12:27

needmorespace Don't be so disingenuous or goady. The number of people who think nurses don't deserve a good wage is tiny. It's how it is paid for that is the issue. The business of just increasing tax on the top 5% won't be anywhere near enough. If you want huge improvements to the NHS then EVERYONE will have to pay more income tax.

As for teachers deserving a good wage, I think generally a lot of them get paid perfectly well enough. I know a deputy head of a small primary school who gets around £45k per year. I think that's acceptable and way ahead of nurses. That's not to say starting salaries for teachers shouldn't be increased however.

Firstwomanonthemoon · 09/05/2017 12:33

As the I have said before my family doesn't mind mind paying more tax, we know stuff costs money and we want decent education and health care. I do object to idea that higher rate tax payers are scamming the system somehow at present when actually the amount of tax we have been playing has been rising. I don't mind it rising but I could really do with out the them and us retoric. I believe in progressive taxation and I dislike being made out to be a tax dodger when I am paying a significant amount of tax. If we are really going to get better services I believe everyone will have to pay more tax. I am fed up with the divide and rule retoric that both Labour and the Conservatives are using to set one section of society against another.

Charmageddon · 09/05/2017 13:26

hope you joined in with the whooping Charmageddon

Labour wont make the poor richer, just the rich poorer. Can't beat a race to the bottom.

Nicemil1 · 09/05/2017 13:54

It makes we wonder what he's promising tomorrow if he wins. Solve world hunger? It's getting more pathetic each day. Fuck off Jeremy and take your idiot cronies with you and let's get a proper opposition.

nInachu · 09/05/2017 14:00

Oh come on, to the people who are moaning about him preaching to devotees- Teresa May has only done speeches in rooms full of Tory sycophants.

He has good policies, I admit he is not the most media friendly politician, but I'd rather someone with good ideas was running the country rather than some inept with an overpaid PR department.

ShatnersWig · 09/05/2017 14:03

nln Good ideas are no good if you a) can't afford them and b) don't have competent people to put them into practice. Are the Tories inept with an overpaid PR dept? Possibly. But I'm afraid Labour, in its current form, is the most inept and incompetent shadow front bench in my lifetime, and I remember Michael Foot.

Badbadbunny · 09/05/2017 14:03

You'd have thought they'd have learned from the LibDem disaster of removing the personal allowance from those earning over £100k which caused a marginal tax/nic rate of 62%! The main effect of that was that hoards of doctors & dentists either retired early or went part time so that their taxable income fell back below £100k to avoid the extra tax. Not only did the govt lose tax revenue from them, it made the shortage of doctors/dentists even worse!! Law of unintended consequences. Not helped by the other "tax" of charging a tax penalty on people with pension pots over £1m - guess who usually has a pension "pot" of over £1m - yes, guessed right - doctors and dentists, which is another reason for them to work less or retire early so they can avoid the pension "tax" penalty! You really couldn't make it up!

All Corbyn's £80k tax hike will do is push even more people into reducing their working hours to pay less tax, or push them into other tax "avoidance" schemes such as limited companies, paying into pensions, etc, or even emigrate.

Don't forget that Labour's £150k higher tax rate of 50% actually caused a reduction in tax revenue and the coalition's reduction to 45% increased the tax yield.

At the end of the day, you could slap a 90% tax on millionaires and the amount raised, even if they all stayed in the UK and didn't try to avoid it, would be a drop in the ocean as there are so few millionaires compared with the tens of millions of people who are earning far smaller amounts.

As usual, the sums and unintended consequences just don't add up. Must be another of Diane Abbot's ideas!

wasonthelist · 09/05/2017 14:34

They'll just leave!
And take their money with them.
Won't they...??!!
Good riddance

Badbadbunny · 09/05/2017 14:38

Good riddance

So you're happy that even more doctors etc will emigrate to make the shortage even worse?

You're happy that business owners will just move their operations to another country that has a lower tax rate and employ staff there rather than here? (After all, these days a lot of businesses are easily portable if they are based around the internet rather than bricks n mortar).

Two4One2017 · 09/05/2017 14:52

Good riddance

One day we're lamenting that post Brexit all the banks are going to move abroad taking the rich, tax paying bankers with them and the next day we're saying good riddance to the top tax payers in the country.Confused

The top 1% (gross income> £164,000) pay >27% of income tax receipts . The top 10% (gross income over £54,000) pay 59% of income tax receipts.
The bottom 50% account for

Charmageddon · 09/05/2017 14:53

On a different note, the more I see of him, the more I really like Tim Farron.

I'm a leaver, who will be voting Tory this time but I'd prefer Lib Dem as the official opposition than Labour.
I want Labour to crumble at this election & for Lib Dem to mop up a lot of their votes.

Unfortunately I can't see that happening and I'm actually quite worried that the polls are wildly wrong and JC is going to pull a Trump and ruin us all.

OP posts:
wasonthelist · 09/05/2017 14:55

So you're happy...etc
Yes, very.
I want people to live here because they like the place, not just because they can't get a better tax deal elsewhere. People like that aren't really contributors anyway.

TheNaze73 · 09/05/2017 14:56

Great point badbadbunny about the taxation, they'll never admit that though as it doesn't fit their politics of envy agenda

wasonthelist · 09/05/2017 14:56
