To tidy up for the burglars?

Conversation with friend this morning about my hectic schedule before going away in a couple of weeks time and thus trying to get the house as clean and tidy as possible before departure. She is of the opinion why bother tidying for the burglars? I love coming home to a clean and tidy house but am I unreasonable (or weird!) having a bit of a house scrub down before I go away? Anyone else compelled to leave the house clean and tidy or dread it on return?

Always have a good today and clean before we go and even when leaving house at 3am to get to airport I have managed to change the beds just before we leave so we all come back to clean sheets 🙈

mando12345 · 08/05/2017 18:27

Gosh yes another one who has a good clean before you go, so what if a bit of dust accumulates. That can wait till the next week after I come back so three weeks potentially before its dusted, shoot me now!!
I hate the aftermath of holidays, unpacking, washing etc., couldn't cope with a dirty house too.

I think if we got burgled the burglars would walk out in disgust Blush

They'll never be able to find anything either 😂

I clean before going on holiday - hate coming home to a shithole - nothing worse than having to spend the day before you go back to work cleaning and sorting stuff out. It's much easier to just chuck some laundry on and be able to chill.

I clean and tidy as well...

Top tip: don't leave a ripe banana in the fruit bowl or you might come home to a room literally covered in flies. Like out if a horror movie...

You are not weird! I thought everyone did this. My cleaner comes in when we are away, she relies on her income as much as I do. Plus sometimes family come to stay here whilst we are on holiday, they are not local any longer so it's nice for them to visit friends who still are. I like a clean house to come home to.

mrscrocopop · 08/05/2017 20:13

Yep, clean and tidy, bleach down all plug holes and toilets. Love coming home to a clean house!

Ethylred · 08/05/2017 20:21

Ironing the curtains and hoovering the children before we leave is always the best part of going on holiday.

This is the reason we don't have a cleaner. We'd need to clean for two days straight beforehand anyway so there seems little point Grin

Cleaning & gardening continue while we are away. We leave the sheets in the washing machine ready to go; they are washed and the bed made up again fi our return. I have been known to do a lad of my own washing while away(DH refuses to get involved but i quite enjoy using a laundrette in a foreign land.

Anything to minimise the hell of coming home. Try also to have another treat lined up, so i don't get the post holiday blues too bady.

icelollycraving · 08/05/2017 20:43

We haven't had a holiday for years.
I used to do a deep clean before holidays, always fresh bed linen and arrange an online shop. Lovely to come home to,and if you've stayed in a hotel, you've had someone making the bed and cooking. It would really piss me off to a load of housework.

surprise · 08/05/2017 20:46

We always leave our house looking "lived in" for this reason. The side/back of the house is mainly glass, so it's easy to see in. We always leave mugs/plates on the tables, chairs pulled out and the radio on.

That way it doesn't look obvious that we're on holiday.

PeaFaceMcgee · 08/05/2017 20:48

Yanbu. Nobody should want to come home to a shit tip.

melj1213 · 08/05/2017 20:57

I always clean before a holiday, but it's nothing I wouldn't be doing anyway because of a) the regular cleaning schedule b) practicality or c) common sense.

I also have cats so I either have a pet sitter or family member coming in daily to feed the animals, water the pot plants, pick up the mail, put the bins out/in on bin day and I don't want them coming into a bomb site.

Washing: I'll be bringing two weeks worth of washing home with me, so why would I want to give myself a three week backlog of washing to catch up on, along with the new washing created once I'm back?

Rubbish: even if it doesn't smell, who wants rubbish sitting in their house for two weeks while they're away when you can just make sure to put the bins out last thing before you leave?

Beds: I love coming home to fresh bedding - there's nothing better after feeling a bit grotty from all the travelling, than having a long hot shower, putting on clean PJs and getting into fresh sheets. Also, unless I changed the sheets the day before going away, those sheets will have been on the bed for a week or two already ... why would you want to leave two week old sheets on a bed for another two weeks and then come back and either sleep in them again or have to start faffing and changing sheets?

Cleaning: why not deep clean before you go and come back needing to do a "maintenance" clean before going back to the normal cleaning routine, rather than a normal once over before you go and then needing to do a deep clean when you get back amongst all the other post-holiday chaos?

General tidying: Unpacking creates a load of mess and clutter - sorting out washing, random holiday stuff, souveniers - not to mention having to sort out other stuff like the post build up, getting in a quick emergency shop from the co-op until I can do a big shop, etc so why not leave the place tidy and clutter free before you go?

Dumbo412 · 08/05/2017 21:31

Yes I always clean before going away for an extended period of time.
Even more so as my dad is going to be house sitting whilst we are away.
His home is quite grubby. I'm hoping that if he spends time in my home which is clean and (sometimes) tidy that he will go home and see his place for the top that it is, and it'll spur him into taking a bit more care of his home.

dudsville · 08/05/2017 21:37

Ooh, I love coming home to a freshly made bed and the laundry dry and the kitchen and bathrooms clean. I also order a food delivery for early next morning so that I have good food to look forward to. If the burglars get in first then the last thing on my mind will be that I tried to make my house nice for myself.

WildKiwi · 10/05/2017 09:53

I like to come home to a tidy house, so always clean up/tidy before we go anywhere. But my theory that any burglars would respect us and leave the house tidily burgled may be flawed (luckily have never had that theory tested).

Orangecake123 · 10/05/2017 10:36

I've left things in a mess before I've left before, but it was so much nicer coming to a clean home.
