To move to Falmouth?

Due to a change in circumstance, we have an opportunity to move to Falmouth. We have two children aged 5 and 3 and would be leaving a great town with a lot going on (good school, zoo, aquarium, children's museums, great forest/mountain walks, massive playcentres, great shopping, you get the idea).

Is anyone familiar with this area and know what this area is like in regards to raising children? Housing is very expensive so we would have to downsize and I have no idea about schools and if they are already full to capacity.

Any opinions/advice would be great!

I worked in Falmouth for 2 years and have lots of friends there still who wouldn't live anywhere else. Cornwall is amazing, so much going on, beaches are incredible and Falmouth is full of events and activities throughout the year

Oh it's gorgeous... I was working there today in blazing hot sunshine. Super beaches, arty, studenty buzz. Can't afford to live there either but just 30mins away. Do it!

Schools won't mind you giving them a ring.

Lovely, thank you Smile

It's a lovely place, with lots and lots of things going on locally and slightly further afield. I'd love to move down there but not likely to happen!

Beeziekn33ze · 09/05/2017 00:19

Wish we could relocate there!

It's a beautiful part of the world. Go for it. Sea, sand, beaches, wildlife, coastal walks. Perfect place to raise children. And they have a Seasalt and Trago!

Falmouth in Cornwall is indeed fantastic and I would move back there in a flash if I could . The Falmouth described by op doesn't sound like the Falmouth I remember though. Mountain / forest walks ? Shopping ? Is there another Falmouth I've not heard of? Smile

Lovely place.

Would it be better or worse for employment opportunities should you/DH be made redundant? Jobs are a key factor IMO.

Dothbutternoparsnips · 09/05/2017 06:56

Or a zoo??

Lived there for a year and loved it. Would be a great place to raise children. Also worth looking at surrounding villages like Devoran.

Good luck.

OPs current hometown is the one with the zoo etc not Falmouth!

OP if I were in your position I'd move in a heartbeat. Good luck x

Screwinthetuna · 09/05/2017 07:12

Yes, where I live now has the zoo and shopping etc. I've never actually been to Falmouth so just needed a heads up on it before I give it some serious thought and visit!

Thanks, everyone Smile

I've been on holiday and I'd move in a heartbeat. Lucky you op!

Whatjusthappenedexactly · 09/05/2017 07:19

Oh, sorry OP. My mistake. Your home town sounds very different from Falmouth but as long as you have job security and can embrace the slower life style / limited public transport Cornwall has to offer I would go for it! You could give your children an amazing upbringing down there. If you have NT membership and get to the beaches you may not miss the play centres at all.

And as another poster mentioned they have Trago for shopping! Smile

Falmouth is brilliant. University town, which always makes for a more vibrant cultural scene. Plus a train station with pretty good connections via Truro.

Housing is varied there - lots of choice about how much you spend. Great restaurant scene. Amazing beaches and scenery. Hosts big cultural events regularly.

Get the kids into sailing when they're about eight. Kayaking before that.
