Why can't I eat or drink at the ballet?

Are you for real? Or were you not taught proper manners? ie consideration for others around you.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/05/2017 16:57

Ok fair enough - I guess it's just that after reading this thread I've kind of got the impression that ballet is performed in auditoriums full of hundreds of Lasswithedelicateairs!

Have you actually been to a ballet or an opera at Covent Garden or anywhere for that matter?

Tickets for many seats are over £100. The Royal Opera Company and Royal Ballet Company are in the top 3 in the world.

Audiences do not talk, or play with mobile phones , or feed chocolate buttons to pacify fractious toddlers or smile sweetly at children dancing in the aisle.

They are not permitted to bring food and drink into the auditorium. They do not get up and go to the bar or the toilet during the performance - or if they do they will not be allowed back until the interval.

All of this is a courtesy to the other audience members who are there because they love opera or ballet.

Why can't I eat or drink at the ballet?

Do you really need an answer to that?

Elphaba99 · 10/05/2017 17:13

Gah, Lass, your mobile phone comment reminded me of being at the Coliseum for Elena Glurdizje's (sp?) last Swan Lake. A youngish guy several rows in front of me was filming the entire ballet on his mobile! 😱😡 Can you imagine the ROH staff letting that slide?

Elphaba99 · 10/05/2017 17:15

Gah - "Glurdjidze"

GetInTheFuckingSea · 10/05/2017 17:28

Hahaha yes I've been to operas including sitting in the front middle of the dress circle at the ROH. Not loads - orchestral music's more my bag. I haven't been to a ballet there but went loads in Russia including seeing the Mariinsky a couple of times - it was cheap as chips over there and in the intervals we all necked Russian "champagne" and ate blinis with caviar (also cheap) which many people took back to their seats - you'd have been horrified! Have also sat in boxes at the Albert Hall where they bring drinks and food to you and yes people eat and drink during performances.

PortableVirgin · 10/05/2017 18:00

Yes, but we were specifically talking about the ROH, rather than opera or ballet at other venues. ENO is less formal than the ROH, and I imagine the AH is less formal still. I've been to operas in Germany where you literally could not hear a pin drop and where half the people sitting near me were following scores, and at La Scala in Milan where the audience was very vocal about singing that didn't impress them! I was asked, pleb that I clearly am, whether I'd been to an opera or ballet at Covent Garden or anywhere- so I answered that question.

Vie been to numerous ballets at the Hippodrome in Brum. Clearly not on the same level of ROH but they sell drinks that you can take in with you. So if you cab take drinks in with you why is it an issue? I'm not talking about breaking open a couple of cans of lager whilst I loudly belch in some poor posh persons ear. I'm talking about a glass of wine which I'm perfectly capable of drinking quietly. Obviously rattley papers, crunchy food etc is different but I hardly think it makes me low life scum to drink my wine quietly whilst watching the ballet

MommaGee · 10/05/2017 18:47

ScarlettFreestone Eating and drinking isn't allowed at the ROH Momma.

Fair enough, thanks for the straight answer

ScarlettFreestone · 10/05/2017 19:07

You are very welcome Momma Grin
