Life-threatening mints!

This is just going to sound ridiculous, but bear with me please.

My DH has taken to sucking mints at night, in bed. I am a very light sleeper (thanks, menopause) and I have been woken up on several occasions by the sound of the sucking/slurping.

Unlike me, he could - and does - fall asleep, mid-sentence, mid-TV programme, whilst sitting up, anywhere, any time. He also suffers a little from sleep apnoea, meaning he stops breathing altogether very occasionally, then after a few seconds there is a massive intake of breath.

A couple of times he appears to have semi-choked on the bloody mint.

I have now banned him from having mints at night. When I challenged him, the worst of it is he doesn't seem to realise how ridiculous this is. Who needs fresh breath in the middle of the night????

I am aware that this is also a rich source of comedy for the DSs who were in fits about it all. HOwever, they have also both said that they are quite concerned, as they realise it could be dangerous.

Last night, I heard DH come downstairs about 1:30 am - he was, unusually having problems sleeping. I found mint wrappers by his chair and so I have pointed out to him that, when choking to death, it makes no difference whether he is downstairs on the sofa or in bed, it will just as stupid!!

Short of staging a televised family intervention, what can I do???

Ask him what you should spend his life insurance on
If he hasn't got any then direct him to a comparison website

Floggingmolly · 07/05/2017 10:29

Why wouldn't he be at risk of choking during the daytime, if he can literally fall asleep anywhere, anytime? Does he have narcolepsy?
Actually eating in bed if he has these issues sounds like he has a death wish Confused

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 07/05/2017 10:30

Enquire whether he actually wants
'Death by mint '
On his headstone?

Kokusai · 07/05/2017 10:30

Yikes that does sound dangerous!

Also what about his teeth? Not great to be eating sweets at night.

SaucyJack · 07/05/2017 10:31

Would a breath spray work instead?

I hate that feeling of waking up in the middle of the night with a mouth like a dead dog's arsehole meself, so I can relate to wanting a mid-sleep freshen up.

Penfold007 · 07/05/2017 10:32

Is he sucking the mints because he thinks he's got indigestion? If so he really needs to see his doctor to rule out a couple of possible conditions.

Pettywoman · 07/05/2017 10:35

Get some Smints, they're tiny.

user1471521456 · 07/05/2017 10:36

Does he think that sucking the mints helps his breathing and helps him sleep?

And missing the point...why isn't he putting his wrappers in the bin?

Adnerb95 · 07/05/2017 13:22

They are sugar-free and I am quite glad he hasn't thrown the wrappers, as it stands!
No he hasn't got narcolepsy, just "old guy" sleepiness in the evenings.
saucy might try the breath spray - good thinking.

As for the "death by mint" both I and the DSs have used this - and worse/better depending on your sense of humour - to no avail.

And no, it's not indigestion just stupidity.
