to think that RE lessons should be more inclusive

DS is learning about marriage in RE and came home explaining that the teacher was talking about it all in the context of a woman meeting a man. Surely in this day and age it should be worded differently and just say 'when you meet somebody who you want to marry,

He's in year 6 and I think is old enough to learn that marriage can be men-men or woman-woman. He's not at a church primary school. I think it'd go a long way to increasing tolerance/acceptance.

Why was he learning about marriage in RE? Although to be fair I don't know many religions that would allow any other sort of marriage.

It depends on the school. We've just voted to include same sex relationships as a board of govs in a c of e school. Our Christian view is that God loves everyone equally (as is the c of e's view). We know that some parents will complain.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 07/05/2017 08:53

BTW are you sure he isn't being taught this as part of sex ed and relationships?

If the op's son goes to a catholic school then he will be learning about marriage like he will have learned about all the other sacraments such as baptism, holy communion and even ordination!

As the Catholic Church doesn't accept same sex marriages, then the op's son's teachers wouldn't be allowed to teach about it in RE lessons, but it will be addressed in PHSE lessons.

No, it's in RE not sex education. He's also not at a church school, it's secular - as secular as allowed anyway.

In year 6 our 'RE scheme of work focuses on rituals and rides of passage in all world religions. It's usually studied with a quick flick through birth, adulthood, marriage and death rites. It's never more than 30 minutes of brief headspace away from constant revision in year 6 and nothing to get in a tizzy about.

Well if its in RE then its the religious view of it. Correct me if Im wrong but the c of e still defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. He should get the gay marriage bit in PHSE.
