Is this too big? Just right? Not enough? Interested in opinions!

What do you think of this portion size for 15mo?

That's more than I would expect a 15 month old to eat in one meal, probably closer to what I would offer a 5 year old.

NoCapes · 07/05/2017 13:13

Looks way too much to me
I wouldn't give a baby 2 fishfingers - my 5 year old has 2!

NuffSaidSam · 07/05/2017 13:17

It's fine to offer as long as you take the plate away when he is full/refuses any more and don't do the 'just one more mouthful', 'just finish the potato', 'come on, you can do better than that'.

I don't think portion size is an issue until they're about two (or even later tbh) as long as the food is healthy and they are left to eat what they want (absolutely no bribing or encouraging or praising to make them eat more than they want).

Oysterbabe · 07/05/2017 13:24

My 16 month old would eat all the mash and peas but only a few bits of fish finger, she's not really a fan of most meat and fish unfortunately. As others say, they self regulate so there's no need to worry.

TisapityshesaGeordie · 07/05/2017 14:00

Neither my 5 year old or 3 year old would eat that much - maybe half - but they're not big eaters.

Feckerlino · 07/05/2017 19:32

Way too much. I wouldn't offer my 4 year old that much, and she's on the 91st centike for weight

MoonriseKingdom · 07/05/2017 20:02

It's so variable. My 2.5 yr old would eat about half that but she's always been on the petite side.

arsenalwatford · 07/05/2017 20:04

My 15 month old DD would clear that. My 4 year old DS would have to be persuaded to eat half. Hmm

requestingsunshine · 07/05/2017 20:04

I'd say that looks way too much. It's more than I would give my 3 year old.

HomityBabbityPie · 07/05/2017 20:05

My 14 mo wouldn't even eat a quarter of that.

But it's a bit of a pointless question really, kids have different appetites just like adults do.

DeliciouslyHella · 07/05/2017 20:09

My 19mo would eat both fish fingers, a couple of spoonfuls of peas and maybe half of the mash. But on a hungry day, she might have more.

As others have said, I would offer that kind of portion though, without any pressure to eat it.

welshweasel · 07/05/2017 20:09

My 15 month old would eat that when he's hungry. He's pretty skinny but tall and I'm constantly amazed at the amount he eats. When he's full though, he clearly says no and pushes the plate away so seems to self regulate.

Grumpbum · 07/05/2017 20:10

Kids are all so different it's the same amount I'd give my 6 year old and he'd probably not eat it all and my 2.5 year old would eat half a fish finger, all the peas and the mash would likely be thrown at me

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/05/2017 20:12

My 19 month old would eat all the peas first, a bit of mash, a couple of bits of fish finger, but wouldn't finish all that. He's a sturdy chap but not a big eater.

Deliaskis · 07/05/2017 20:28

That's roughly what my 6yo would eat, but they're all different, as evidenced by the range of responses on this thread! At 15mo she would have eaten more like a third of that.

Pinkjellybeans · 08/05/2017 08:47

I was told by hv that they only need enough to fit in the palm of there hand for each item of food. And if you put too much on a plate it overwhelms them which puts them off.

Ecureuil · 08/05/2017 09:27

And if you put too much on a plate it overwhelms them which puts them off

I don't find that. Whatever I put on their plates, mine just eat until they're full.

edengarden123 · 08/05/2017 09:31

For meat portions I've heard you give the size of the palm of their hand. If that's any help

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 08/05/2017 09:38

My 14 month old would polish that off in no time. My 4 year old would probably struggle. Confused I think it's fine I would prob offer less mash and another vegetable but my kids love veggies so the more the merrier!

hibbledobble · 08/05/2017 09:52

Personally I don't stress about portion sizes. I give the children healthy food, in what I believe is a reasonable portion size (not huge as I hate food waste). There is always plenty more available if they want. As long as the food is healthy I don't mind how much they eat. We are all healthy weights. Eldest dd is built like a greyhound (very long and skinny) and has are huge appetite, but then she is very active.

field10 · 08/05/2017 18:02

That is far to much, my 11 yo would eat that but my 3 yo still doesn't have anywhere near that much. I find most eateries do this as well children don't actually need that amount to be healthy.

LapinR0se · 08/05/2017 18:05

I think about half that much but keep an extra fish finger aside in case still hungry

AppleOfMyEye10 · 08/05/2017 18:21

I'm always amazed on here with the huge portion sizes and small children! That is way too much.

welshweasel · 08/05/2017 18:23

Depends on the child apple . As I said earlier my DS is following 50th centile for weight and above 75th for weight. Trousers always fall down on him. He has a good appetite, I let him eat until he's full. If he starts putting on weight excessively then I'll rethink but are you suggesting I should put my baby on a restricted diet?

anothermalteserplease · 08/05/2017 18:24

My 15 month old would eat about 1/3 of that in one sitting on a good day. I don't know if my 7 year old would eat that size portion tbh.
