HATE advertising you can't close down or get away from easily and came online today to find this horrendous example.

Stopped using The Independent for the same reason. Annoying, repetitive, in your face advertising

YABU. Mumsnet have employees that need paying. How would the website make money to pay their employees without having adverts to generate revenue? You can't just expect people to work for free so there has to be some kind of income generation going on.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 06/05/2017 08:54

Perhaps MNHQ could ditch the adverts and make us all pay a subscription? Attractive, no?

TiggyMP · 06/05/2017 08:58

I also want to pay a subscription. Make it a private club with content that can only be seen by members, and not any old passing journalist or troll.

TiggyMP · 06/05/2017 09:00

And surely the people who work at MNHQ do it for the love of it, and wouldn't dream of asking for money.

Thingvellir · 06/05/2017 09:02

Like stumbly I use the app, only get one static add at the end of the posts. Pretty sure I'm not using an ad blocker as I've never installed one

Orlantina · 06/05/2017 09:05

Given there's been a slump in advertising - as Google and YouTube seems to get most of it - I wonder how much it cost to advertise on MN?

Is it worth it?

isupposeitsverynice · 06/05/2017 09:08

I installed an ad blocker on my phone because it was getting ridiculous. I feel bad about it because I appreciate mn needs the funds but when you can only read half a dozen words per page because of the ads, it's that or go elsewhere. I understand why mn didn't want to charge a subscription but loads of websites give the option of subscribing to get rid of ads now, so I think it seems very normal, and people who can't/won't pay can just tolerate the ads.

Stargazey44 · 06/05/2017 09:18

Who would be prepared to pay a subscription fee to have an ad free Mumsnet?

faithinthesound · 06/05/2017 09:24

Don't use Adblock Plus. Apparently they did a deal with some advertisers - the advertisers pay them to be "whitelisted", meaning, their ads won't be blocked by the app. It seems completely counterintuitive and frankly hypocritical for an ADBLOCKER to take advertisers money to allow ADS.

Use uBlock Origin. As far as I'm aware, they haven't sold out.

mydogmymate · 06/05/2017 09:29

I would happily pay a subscription, if only to get rid of the really annoying fairy advert ⬇️

FluffyBathTowel · 06/05/2017 09:31

^ The Adblock Plus whitelisted bit is optional and you can chose what sites to whitelist. I have this option switched off so I don't have any whitelisted sites.

MythicalChicken · 06/05/2017 09:32

I think YABVU. How else are companies like Mumsnet and newspapers expected to make their money? They're not charities!

I get a lot of entertainment and support from Mumsnet and don't begrudge them the money they get from advertising.

MythicalChicken · 06/05/2017 09:33

I also want to pay a subscription. Make it a private club with content that can only be seen by members, and not any old passing journalist or troll.

How selfish! What about people who genuinely could not afford the subscription?

And stupid! You think journalists and trolls wouldn't pay?

I don't begrudge MN for making money from advertising Mythical it's the fact that the ads were making the site slow and completely unusable on my phone that was the issue. If they sorted that out I'd have no problem uninstalling adblocker.

PollyPerky · 06/05/2017 09:40

The only way MN makes money to fund the site and their staff is through adverts. Same as the infamous Daily Mail online.

One of the downsides of using the interweb - forums and social media- is you will be bombarded with adverts. if you don't like it, stay off the web. it's not a compulsory part of life to use forums.

GoodEyebrowDay · 06/05/2017 09:42

For the benefit of the posters not bothering to read my OP properly/responses; no issue with adverts, just the intrusive, all over the page, still there when you scroll down/can't click off it type...

OP posts:
MythicalChicken · 06/05/2017 09:53

Hmmm... I don't get those OP. I only see ads in the bottom right-hand corner. Maybe it's your computer settings?

MyNameIsntTaken · 06/05/2017 10:16

Websites do cost money to keep running. Especially with this many users. If they want to keep it running, it's either charge everybody to use it or allow ads to pay for it.

FluffyBathTowel · 06/05/2017 10:22

I don't get how other sites can have ads though and it doesn't effect the sites' functionality and usability. It's not the ads that bother me on MN it's the fact that it renders the site useless on my phone.

SmokeCloak · 06/05/2017 10:32

I get that MN need the revenue from adverts. The side one is still bloody annoying though.

SmokeCloak · 06/05/2017 10:33

I don't like the adverts that are in the middle of a thread either.

C8H10N4O2 · 06/05/2017 10:34

Ad revenue may be needed to keep the site free at the point of use but when the adverts become intrusive and distracting the site ceases to be of any use and at that point I use ad blockers.
For these 'edge' adverts whoever spec'd, built and tested the rendering and performance on the mobile component did a crap job or assumed users will put up with anything.

TiggyMP · 06/05/2017 12:14

I think £5 per year is payable for all, yet will discourage kids on their holidays from posting rubbish.

And stupid! You think journalists and trolls wouldn't pay?
If there was a little tick box at the subscription point saying "I promise not to use any quotes without permission", that would mean that if something gets in the papers it could only have been due to somebody breaking the service for money contract. Don't know if that would help.

user1487070016 · 06/05/2017 13:48

huh, I use an add blocker and have never seen adverts like that on Mumsnet.

I suggest that you install one on your browser
