...to wonder why the fucking chip shop is closed at 8pm?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and need chips. Fat British slightly soggy crisps with top much salt and vinegar.

I've been planning it all day

Walked to local high street (one of the local high streets in Southampton, hardly obscure) and the one and only chip shop is bloody closed!
It was open when I got here at 7.55, but by the time I'd waited 8 min for my chicken shish to cook in the kebab place opposite it had CLOSED.

It's 8pm, this high St is student-ville. Why no chip shop? I'm distraught. I don't want kebab shop Iceland frozen chips.

I didn't want battered fish etc either, hence visiting kebab place first.

I want to cry.

If it's Southampton student vile high street - go to sprinkles and console yourself with a great big sundae!

AnnieAnoniMouse · 05/05/2017 21:12

I have a fridge bursting with 'proper' food.

What I want now is a chip butty 😫

...but not quite enough to go out to find an open chip shop & I'm home alone or I'd have employed the big puppy eyes 🤣

You must've gone to gone to Small Fry OP. Always close early. I'm 30-miles from you and we have a brilliant chippy that stays open until 10 p.m.

I've got a pile of chips left over from tonight, god they were good!

Ooh you're making me hungry now! I always seem to crave fish and chips on a Friday for some reason, but going on past experience,I won't even consider going to my local fish and chip shop (which has the reputation as the best one in town). Every Friday evening, from the moment it opens at 5pm until around 9pm,the queue is miles long. Only on a Friday. I go past the shop on the bus most evenings and whereas every other evening there are usually a couple of customers in the shop,on a Friday night, the queue is out in the street. It goes twice round the shop and out the door. I reckon there must be about 40 people queuing. And there is no way I could stand there that long waiting to be served, with my back and hips. When I mentioned it to my DD,she said it was because of the old tradition 'fish on a Friday' that was the reason for it being so busy on a Friday. Really?

Still got all these left over, probably have to bin them too Sad

We live about 20 miles away norland

And our chippy is still open as well

Always has big queues though

Seems about right. 8pm. Most people wouldn't be wanting fish and chips after that.

redlittlesquirrel · 05/05/2017 21:54

I'm in Southampton too and the ones round here are open until late. Seems crazy to shut so early, especially in a student town. For future reference I would check if there are any others close by that open later!

BoysofMelody · 05/05/2017 21:59

I think it depends if the chip shop is located near pubs. I live in a city so they do a lot of their trade at chucking out time. It shocked me when I visited a friend in the sticks and got off the train and was starving, saw a chip shop, bounded across the road to find it was closed.

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/05/2017 22:03

The chip van where my BIL lives shuts up at the end of September and reopens at Easter.

Giraffeski · 05/05/2017 22:05

Ours shuts at 7pm. Annoying as we can't have a sneaky fish and chips after the kids are in bed!

Wickedstepmum67 · 05/05/2017 22:08

I do know of one sandwich shop that, erm, shuts for lunch?! (OK, not helpful). Nothing worse than just needing a specific food and finding you can't have it. Our local chippie doesn't stay open late either tho'.

Dixiebell · 05/05/2017 22:21

I think they should open earlier than 5pm too. With young kids who often have tea 4:30/5:00ish we've found ourselves sitting outside the chippy at 4:45 on a Saturday on the way back from a day out before, having promised the kids chip shop chips but not having realised it wouldn't be open yet. Also I've sometimes thought on a Friday on the way home from school it would be nice to pick up fish and chips for tea, but cba to go back out again a couple of hours later...
