Aibu to think I can do this and not die??

I started a diet but ill baby and life... Put it all back on. Same with exercise - I struggle to fit it in between a toddler, all his classes etc and him not sleeping through. Andvyes I know lots of other people have harder lives and are perfectly fit and healthy

So now its three weeks away

I need to write my will don't I?
How can I get race ready in 3 weeks?

Gym no good, nothing really suitable around D's work hours

Is this a race for life type event?

Cheby · 05/05/2017 12:28

Is it one of those tough middle things? Because if so I'm not sure you would get round without practice.

user1471462701 · 05/05/2017 12:32

Get out and go for a run, if you can work yourself up to a constant 20-30 minutes you'll be fine. Start off with ten minutes each day and up it

UppityHumpty · 05/05/2017 12:33

Depends how difficult it is. I could jog 5k even when I was unfit and overweight. If you absolutely won't be able to do it then don't

Pigface1 · 05/05/2017 12:36

You can do it! 5k is about half an hour of running. Just try jogging for 25 minutes without stopping.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 05/05/2017 12:39

If it's got loads of obstacles you won't be running much between them anyway. I did a 10 k on 5 weeks training, completed it in 2 hours 7 mins, slow but I did it. You can do it OP!

mikkistok · 05/05/2017 12:41

When I did an obstacle race last year it wasn't that difficult because there was always a queue for each obstacle which meant you got a rest waiting and then could jog a bit in between the obstacles. You'll be fine. It's not really a race, just about getting round. You might even enjoy it!

Mrsmadcatlady · 05/05/2017 12:46

As others have said, try to get out for a short run, even if you run to a lamppost then walk to the next one, then run to the next one and so on. 10-20 minutes every few days is better than nothing. I did a 5k pretty muddy last year without very much training, and managed it (even though I looked like I needed oxygen). Thankfully, we stopped at every obstacle which gave me a breather as people were queuing to get through (or over).
Good luck! You'll be fine!

thedevilinablackdress · 05/05/2017 12:49

It's not so much about your weight but your general level of fitness. What was it like in the past? Do you get out for long walks now at all? Do you know if the course is mainly running or if you're going to need upper body strength for hauling yourself up and over things a lot?

queenofawkward · 05/05/2017 12:56

How fat are we talking here?! A stone or 2 overweight should be fine. These obstacle courses are actually better than a straight up 5k as you usually have to stop and queue to get on the obstacles themselves so you get your breath back then.

antimatter · 05/05/2017 12:58

more important how fit are you at the moment. Fat people can be fit too.

maybe someone can come up with a link to a test you can do at home

worst case scenario you will walk it!

Oscha · 05/05/2017 13:01

If it's a Race for Life you can definitely do it. I've done it a couple of times with no training and rather a lot of extra weight! You can walk/run/crawl with no judgement, and there are often little kids, elderly people, people with buggies, people in wheelchairs - it's really inclusive and not at all a 'race' in that sense.

BrieAndChilli · 05/05/2017 13:05

I ran a 10k last week. I had been running once a week and could only manage about 2k before having to walk. The 10k was super hilly and I walked a lot of it and did it in 1hr 27.
The week before I did a 5k obstacle race and walked a lot inbetween the obstacles.
In 3 weeks you could get yourself able to at least run half of it.
Just start running then walk when you feel you need to. Slowly you will be running more than you walk.

niangua · 05/05/2017 13:07

If it's an obstacle course you need upper body strength. Running isn't going to give you that, weights and resistance training will.

If it's a silly, fun obstacle course with inflatables or something, maybe you can have fun.

If it's a serious one like Tough Mudder, you're just going to be walking past everything. You need considerable upper body strength to hoist yourself up and over various things, as well as carry yourself across ditches/water on things like monkey bars and rings.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 05/05/2017 13:15

The one I did (strongman run) there were a lot of really serious people and a lot of people out to have fun. A team of guys did it dressed as beer bottles and carried (and drank) a crate of 24 bottles of beer around with them. The obstacles that required upper body strngth generally had a 'for wimps' option which generally involved getting yourself through a pit of mud. Most obstacles were general fitness e.g. Climbing up, across and down cargo jets, crawling through narrow pipes or under electrified nets. Lots of going through water.

MommaGee · 05/05/2017 13:54

Sorry, sick toddler...

Its a color run 5 k with lots of inflatables. IV done a straight 5k a few times in about 45 minutes. Walk lots with the baby (toddler) and carry him (2 stone) but not for more than say 10 minutes.
My friend I'm doing it eta is way fitter but I'm hoping she'll slow down so we can do it for fun.
Queues at obstacles is a good point - I was thinking none stop running / walking / climbing.

Ok so I think you're right about the running. I have fitness DVD's but either have the toddler under my feet or DH at home so I feel self conscious. If I put baby to bed and go out for a short run 4/5 week days (he goes to to the pub one night) that will be good. Maybe the weekend inbetween a bit longer.

Its sponsored for one of the charities that helped us an our poorly son so I really have to go through and finish or die
