To think that voting tactically in the GE

Is now the only viable option to prevent Tory dominance for the foreseeable future? And even that is a very remote possibility. The liberal/ moderate vote is too split to provide an effective opposition to hard Brexit.

The only thing I have to console myself is, going back over their propaganda, I did actually prefer the Lib Dem candidate to the Labour. So as much as I thought I was tactically voting and epically failed to do so, at least I didn't betray my conscience and lose. Makes me feel a little better.

Batteriesallgone · 05/05/2017 11:12

But MrsBennet, how do you work out who to tactically vote for without relying on past data? That's my problem.

user40788 · 05/05/2017 11:13

At least if the Tories win they can make unpopular decisions which need to be made without worrying about Labour/Lib Dems vetoing them (such as removing the triple lock, putting more taxes on unearned income etc).

Cocklodger · 05/05/2017 11:15

Voting tactically for whom though? I'll
Vote labour. Best of the worst IMO.

Well true batteries. I agree there are some seats where it would be very difficult, especially if there is no polling. I am relying somewhat on past data for mine, but also on speaking to people in the community. And the election results from yesterday when they are available.

Maybe. I cannot envisage him getting more than the low 200s of seats though, max, and quite likely less. I guess what he does in response to that is another thing altogether.

Justanotherlurker · 05/05/2017 12:22

the problem with this line of thinking is that its a rather large assumption that Lib Dems would want to go into Partnership with Labour!!

MissShittyBennet · 05/05/2017 12:31

If you don't want the Tories in again, it makes sense to place your vote where it will be of most use regardless of whether there'll be a coalition or not.

ExplodedCloud · 05/05/2017 12:39

Voting tactically is a valid option in a FPTP multi party system. Especially in a marginal constituency.
Not so much in a constituency that's been the same colour as long as it's existed and Methuselah was too young to vote...

The Lib Dems and Tories are similar enough at this point that they should just merge. Or one should call it a day. It's very damaging to have two left-leaning parties in the mix with one right-leaning (UKIP doesn't count - even their fans know that by now).

I'm quite embarrassed that I voted for Corbyn. I think he'd make a good PM, but he's just too honourable. I think politicians have to be a bit dirty to get anywhere these days. He should have announced Labour as the 'remain' option - we all know that's what this election is about - but he won't do it.
