To think Labour are screwed

Labour lost a heck of a lot of seats last night. I don't really get why, but I think it was well over 300 that went in the majority went to the Conservatives.

Is this a reflection of the General election?

Elections tend to follow a pattern here. We vote in the same party until it's obvious everything is fucked. Then we vote in the opposition and everyone's happy. For a bit. Then they start to under perform and people whinge, but they still vote them in, the next GE or two.

Eventually it flips and people vote in the others on a landslide again.

The huge difference this time though is Brexit - that could accelerate the shitshow!

I think the Tories will win but Lib dem will pick up votes again, and labour will be annihilated.

Then they'll get rid of corbyn at some point, and rebuild in a more central way, and then they'll get back in.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 05/05/2017 08:46

Absolutely Labour are in for an absolute trashing at the GE

I was just thinking if Corbyn stepped down and let's say Yvette Cooper of Keir Starmer replaced him now could Labour claw back some votes so at least we good provide a reasonable opposition

He won't step down though

My issue is I want to vote Labour but don't want to vote for him and I certainly don't want to be counted in the numbers supporting his ideology that proves people want him as leader and support the party moving to the left b cause I don't

TheNaze73 · 05/05/2017 08:48

The amount of seats they are losing in opposition, is unprecedented.

Does anyone really thinks the current shadow cabinet, could run the country?

Labour need to remember that Blair was their only leader to win general elections in the last 40 years & they was a reason for that.

24HourTrainer · 05/05/2017 08:49

@RoseGoldProsesso

I agree with the idea of cycles, but don't see how Lib Dems will benefit. Local polls are showing the Tories gaining at the expense of every other party, including those who went to UKIP.

Littlecaf · 05/05/2017 08:54

I also agree with the idea of cycles. Give it 2 more GEs then a coalition and Labour will be back in.

Always voted Labour, but very disappointed with them at the moment. I hate the anti everything Facebook Momentum Labour friends that I have. They seem hate everyone except their Own kind. You don't win an election like that.

SparklyFairyDust · 05/05/2017 08:54

Sorry read OP again & it was crap grammar.

I didn't think that the annihilation would be 'that' bad.

OP posts:
SparklyFairyDust · 05/05/2017 17:29

It's really so much worse than I imagined, across England, Scotland, Wales, some how, I honestly can't believe it, Conservatives have gained 😨

Have people been living in the same country as everyone else?

These things are not ebbs and flows, the Labour party have won 4 majorities before Blair, and would have won only 2 without Scottish seats:

1945 - 159 majority
1964 - 4 majority (43 in Scotland)
1966 - 96 majority (46 in Scotland)
1974 - 3 seats (41 in Scotland)

So 20 years between 1st and 2nd, 10 years till 4th, 23 years till 5th (Blair)
Could easily be 2035 before they are back without it being a surprise.

BMW6 · 05/05/2017 19:01

I honestly think Corbyn won't step down no matter how trashed Labour are on 8 June. What the hell will happen then? Will Labour split?

Bluntness100 · 05/05/2017 19:07

Agree , this time it's nothing about policies. I think fundamentally not many people can believe corbyn and his ragamuffin shadow cabinet could Govern the country never mind manage brexit. They can barely agree with one another. As such the country is voting for the safest pair of hands it can to lead us through one of the most unstable and risky periods in our history.

Absolutely, for now.

But Jeremy will have to step down, and then they have five years to get their shit together. I'm pleased to be living in Greater Manchester, which has just elected a labour mayor, at least.

The80sweregreat · 05/05/2017 19:16

Yes, agree with the op.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/05/2017 19:31

Useful breakdown of the results here:

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 05/05/2017 19:34

I agree BMW6 I don't think Corbyn will step down

Every vote for Labour at the next election will in his eyes and McDonnell will be a vote for a left wing Labour Party be in 2 million or 6 million and that will be worth it for them to hold on to fight for those people that voted

Not recognising that some people will always vote Labour and some will be a tactical vote
