My 12 year old is a scout and next week is meant to be going on a weekend away with some boys in his pack- he is the youngest. The other 3 boys are 14 and 16. They are going to a house in the countryside in the middle of nowhere! I have said he can't go and dh thinks I am being overprotective. Aibu?

Not relevant aa you're not in the UK, but to all the people saying it wouldn't be allowed and talking about NAPs, this type of event would be covered by an event passport, allowing for patrol camps without leaders etc.

You are being completely reasonable and sensible.
I would just about allow 4 16 year olds to go, but not 14 or 12.

OP are you sure there's definitely no adult supervision for the entire trip?

Because I remember similar trips at Guides, where we were dropped off at a specific point and had to navigate to the camping spot by ourselves, set up our campsite and camp for the evening ... but we were always in phone contact.

Also once we arrived at the campsite our leaders were already there and had set up their own camp in the vicinity of ours but still separate so whilst we were "alone" in that they didn't actively help us out or interfere with the group unless it was an emergency and/or we requested help, we weren't unsupervised iyswim?

What country? I say NO aswell. It's too young.

Is the 16 year old not the adult?? I'm not UK but is that not the age you can vote/gamble/leave school/ have sex/buy alcohol?
Perhaps not...

The Guide camp permit badge is still listed on the website although I'm not sure how many do it. I certainly don't with my Guides nor do any of the other Guide leaders I know do it. We only take the girls camping with leaders once a year, often to camps where the catering is provided. They just don't have the experience to organise it themselves. Hell, I've camped as an assistant leader with more experienced leaders taking charge and on my own as staff at jamborees but I STILL don't feel I have the experience to lead a camp for the girls myself! And I'm a fairly sensible adult. No way would I trust teenagers to take charge!

Certainly the 16 year old would be in Explorers rather than Scouts, possibly the 14 year old as well. But a 12 year old is totally different and imo too young to camp without adults.

No, def not. Also if it's a scout activity surely they should have an adult present who represents the scouts.

Giddyaunt18 · 05/05/2017 14:04

No no no no no oh and no!

Glad everyone agrees with me - was beginning to think I was going crazy! I will definitely speak to some of the other mums about it too. I am in Italy btw.

That sounds well dodgey ! I'd actually be asking other parents if they are aware there will be no adults, first aid etc..
