To really hate those 'name and shame' type posts?

Sorry, its FB related.

You know the kind, a picture of a random person with the words "This is X name, he is a 'insert horrible thing - paedophile/animal abuser/wife beater etc', he lives in Y town, name and shame...blah blah".

I've seen loads of them in the past but there was one in particular that a few of my relatives who live in a different part of the country have shared and it got pretty nasty. Said bloke was accused of being a paedophile, with a picture of him and another person, post gave details about where he lived and what he had supposedly done. Every single comment on it was people insulting him, many of them threatening him and his family with serious violence. Obviously all these people were also sharing the post so more people could see it.

Aibu to think that this is wrong? I, nor anyone else, have any idea if some random picture and accusation posted on FB is remotely true, if they do genuinely suspect that it is why not just report that person to the police? What if the guy in this picture is completely innocent and ends up getting his head kicked in or worse on the back of an accusation that could be completely untrue? Don't these people think of these things when they're sharing the picture?

Aibu? I really want to say something as it winds me up so much!

I agree with you and I'm very suspicious about whether they're true or not.

WorraLiberty · 04/05/2017 20:20

Agreed. If I see them, I report them to FB.

Peeedoze are the scum of the universe imo, but I am not fond of these self appointed cops and vigilantes either.

Thing is, as you say OP, it's the family that suffer too.

MrsHathaway · 04/05/2017 20:22

It's rubber necking and virtue signalling at best.

Even if it were true, by uncovering someone's new identity you would be perverting the course of justice and requiring scarce resources to be channelled into resettling someone yet again, making it even less likely they'd be able to turn over a new leaf.

Frankly, reading the comments on such posts is terrifying. Far too many people saying we would bring back capital punishment and that they'd volunteer to pull the trigger Hmm

Abraiid2 · 04/05/2017 20:23

I agree. Horrible.

SharkiraSharkira · 04/05/2017 20:43

Exactly, Mrs. The comments I read were awful, people threatening to smash his head in, cut his balls off etc. Nasty stuff.

Also, there was someone else in one of the photos with him! Even if he was guilty of what they said, that person wasn't! There could be so many repercussions of people posing this kind of shit and people just don't think. How would they like it if someone did that to them or their friend/relative?

They drive me crazy too

I agree with you. Anybody can put up a picture of anyone they dislike and say anything about them. Vulnerable people are easy targets from yobs who now have social media to terrorise their victims and that's who most of the victims are. Not paedophiles or criminals...

It's bullying, slander, abuse, intimidation and I think Facebook should be required to ban any user who behaves like that or likes any post promoting abuse. The police should also take it seriously. Unfortunately laws have not caught up with our technology.

SharkiraSharkira · 04/05/2017 23:03

Totally agree Hilda.
