What's the difference between been someone's girl and being their girlfriend? I'm hearing she's my girl all the time but not sure what it actually means.

OP posts:
Chickendipper12 · 04/05/2017 19:28

I thought it was the same

NancyDonahue · 04/05/2017 19:29

In a romantic sense, I would say that 'my girl' means girlfriend.

soontobemrsmckeown · 04/05/2017 19:29

I thought so too but wanted to be sure before I started reading things too much.

OP posts:
loaferloveforyou · 04/05/2017 19:29

Thought it was the same to be honest.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 04/05/2017 19:29

One sounds cringeworthy and the other sounds ok...

ImpetuousBride · 04/05/2017 19:29

It may mean "girlfriend" or it may be"the One", similar to "she's my woman".

loaferloveforyou · 04/05/2017 19:30

If someone called me their "girl" I'd feel a bit like their property

icelollycraving · 04/05/2017 19:31

I was expecting shall we eat the chicken/should I go to a&e etc from the thread title.
I would say,to answer your op, they are pretty much the same thing.

IAmTheWorwax · 04/05/2017 19:33

I'd take it as the step before girlfriend.

IAmTheWorwax · 04/05/2017 19:34

Can I ask why you needed quick responses? No reason really, I'm just being nosey.

RebelRogue · 04/05/2017 19:35

Mostly they mean the same thing.
Occasionally it can be used as praise "That's my girl!" Without it being a romantic relationship, but i haven't heard it very often.

ThreeLeggedHaggis · 04/05/2017 19:35

YABU

MsJamieFraser · 04/05/2017 19:36

It's a bit cringe, but it means the same I suspect.

soontobemrsmckeown · 04/05/2017 19:44

Just been called it by a guy I went on a date with on friday. He was calling me it on the date after we had been chatting for a month. Wondering if he is saying we are in a relationship or not. As I really like him.

OP posts:
FlyingElbows · 04/05/2017 19:46

Ofgs just ask him!

HarrietKettleWasHere · 04/05/2017 20:05

Only on Friday?! One date! Shock

But soon for this kind of terminology!

That needs a quick response? Hmm

Ellisandra · 04/05/2017 20:10

And it's not his choice as to whether you're in a relationship or not.

(Hint though: after ONE date, you're not)

Are you sure you're old though to date? Grin

bloodymaria · 04/05/2017 20:10

Is his surname mckeown? What a pace you're moving at, woman!

Sittinginthesun · 04/05/2017 20:11

I thought "my girl" was a bit 1960's American?

SnapJack68 · 04/05/2017 20:17

Are you 14? Why did you need a quick response for that? Did the mizz edition you were waiting on not publish your agony aunt letter and you therefore needed an emergency back up plan to answer this heart stoppingly important question?

AtrociousCircumstance · 04/05/2017 20:21

My assessment is: 'my girl' is designed to give you a warm glow of possibility and potential but it most decidedly does not mean girlfriend.

MrsHathaway · 04/05/2017 20:25

Indicates possession but neither exclusivity nor commitment. Also potentially infantilising.

"Actually, saying 'my girl' is making me cringe a bit. Not sure why. Do we really need labels?"

Fairenuff · 04/05/2017 20:28

Are you sure you're not his gurl and he is your boi?
