Found some money in work car park - is it my employers?

Found a bank note in a side alley between two buildings on my way from car park into work today. Small sum . It's a massive site with 5,000 employees at least. I popped into nearest building reception, gave them my name and mobile and said I had found a small sum of money.
Then emailed security and car parking office when I reached my desk .
I got a shirty email from head if security to hand it in immediately and they would take care of it
I did, no receipt offered and when asked what they do if it's not claimed that said it goes to the finance office.
Then to charity if not claimed.
Feel a bit of a mug for handing it over , thigh had plannned to give it to the children's hospital charity if not claimed . AIBU to feel it's not theirs to dispose of?

When someone finds anything in our office they put it on our staff intranet page and if it isn't claimed it's handed in to the organisations current charity of choice.

I think it was probably more for the company to decide what to do with it than it was yours - as it was found on site.

I guess it's a no win situation, security have said they will deal with it, and it wasn't yours to keep either, so you have done the right thing.
Your intentions were good, maybe go back and ask for a receipt?

Normally you would have to make reasonable efforts to find an owner for unidentifiable property, i.e. Leaving note in shop, poster on a lamp post or as you did, notifying site security. You can keep the property for a period of time after which you can claim it as yours to do whatever you want with it. You'll need to check rules and regulations from your employer if the property was found on their site as they may have different rules about found property.

I've dropped or forgotten money quite a times (on a pavement, at the self-checkout till etc) and found the money had been handed in. Was always amazed. I do the same.

Asda keep a book where it's all recorded. That's what your employer should do.

good to know there are still some honest / nice people in the world full respect to you op Smile

The money belongs to the person who lost it. In the event it remains unclaimed, the entity who owns the property on which it was found would be able to decide what is done with it.

With a response like that I would have said 'actually I'll take it to my local police station'

Don't really see the problem. They are better placed to return it - if anyone reports it, that would be passed to finance office as there's a procedure.

They don't need to give you a receipt as it's not yours.

The only U bit would be how shirty the email was, really.

Don't see why you're so bothered - it now has the best chance of being claimed, and ultimately it goes to charity which is what you wanted.

So I think YABU.

Yes they had no right to be shirty
