Present ideas for someone going travelling

OK not really AIBU but posted for traffic.

A young woman I know will shortly be embarking on several months travelling. I would like to get her a little "farewell and good luck" gift but I don't know what would be useful and/or appropriate given she will probably have limited luggage space.

Anyone any ideas?

Do you know what type of devices she is taking? You could offer credit for downloading books or stories. There is often a long of waiting involved in travelling, something to listen to might be very welcome. Would need to know Apple or Amazon etc.

sirfredfredgeorge · 03/05/2017 13:19

CASH.

fourandnomore · 03/05/2017 13:19

A small travel journal or a multicharger.

What's the context of your friendship?

Posh present

  • Luggage tag
  • Tiny smythson notebook or blank journal - extra light thin pages so v useful when backpacking
  • leather Aspinal passport holder to keep her passport from being too beaten up

Practical

Here are a few things that I was bought before I went travelling:

A notebook with travel themed quotes throughout which I used as a diary. I wrote in it as much as I could and I love rereading it and remembering things that have slipped my mind now.

A scrapbook for me to stick photos/mementoes in when I got home

A little made up kit with things like a drawstring washbag, ear plugs (needed if staying in hostels!!!), eye mask (again, sooo useful), mini torch etc

I went travelling at 18 and one of my gifts was a little gold St Christopher medal which I stitched into my rucksack. Two decades later and living in another country I now have it stitched into my handbag! I'm not religious and just see it as a good luck charm, but obviously some people might not want a St Christopher.

If you know where she's flying from, you can pay for lounge access at most major airports. Kick off the travels in style! Www.loungepass.com I think

Rohan ultra silver travel briefs. My sister took them around the world.

Wow some excellent ideas. Thank you.

I think I will investigate some of these then have a quiet word with her Mum to check I don't duplicate anything she already has.

Microfibre towel, they're amazing. They pack small and dry super fast.

This book:

It's a pointing picture book to help with any language barriers.

Nice luggage tags
Packing cubes
Waterproof makeup

MatildaTheCat · 03/05/2017 13:55

Travel towel, small but powerful torch. rape alarm, gadget that recharges phone battery.

Ds went off with all the stuff a good mother could provide and returned with almost nothing so don't spend too much. Grin

welovepancakes · 03/05/2017 14:00

merino wool gear if going to a cold climate

KC225 · 03/05/2017 14:01

A really nice big sarong. I have used on the beach, as a towel, as a cover up sneaking to shared bathrooms, as a bedcover when arriving in the middle if the night and being aunable to check the mattress, as a cloth when I dropped bottle of coke in a hostel room. Loads of uses, packs small, washes and dries quickly.

a st Christopher necklace she can wear. he's a patron saint of travellers. I had one when I went travelling (I'm not religious either, was just a nice and thoughtful present that takes up no space.)
