To Think the Tories Are STILL At War With The Disabled?

JoffreyBaratheon · 03/05/2017 10:56

As parent of a disabled child, this is what I'm preoccupied with, during a General Election...

Under Cameron and Osborne, and iDS - it was clear the tories were engaging in an all out war on the disabled. Cuts to benefits, and services and of course, the loathed and disgusting PIP replacing DLA...

But what has strong and stable (well, weak an unstable) Theresa May done to reverse the damage? Nothing, so far as I can see.

My son had DLA for life and by some miracle, managed to get PIP but will now have to re-apply in five years. If the tories have the cure for autism and it is going to be made available in 5 years - fair enough. But something tells me - they haven't. We were put through months of hell for that.

Other disabled people and their carers have far worse stories.

Now I might be stupid but I can't see what May has done to address the callous culture of PIP. She is still attacking the disabled. Or am I missing something and AIBU?

I think this should be enough to lose them the election. The fact they have attacked disabled people to the extent they have. Am I the only one not to be hoodwinked by this 'I'm only a vicar's daughter' BS? What she has done to the disabled is the least 'christian' thing I can think of and I want her held to account for it. Anyone else?

Oh, WELL DONE that woman who ranted at May yesterday.

May has a disability you know, its called DEAFNESS. she couldn't give a shit about that woman.

NO party gives a shit about us. NONE.
theres a thread on MN about benefit fraud, how come THEY get everything? its because of them that the genuine look like cheats too.

Its disgusting. I bet TM takes NO notice of that woman, and does a 'Gordon' (when he called a woman a bigot).

aren't there any MPs for disability? if there are where the hell are THEY?

HelenaDove · 16/05/2017 16:37

No They dont give a shit. After DH recieved his appointment for his "assessment" at a centre (we received the letter for this last Friday 12th May) I phoned them up at 3.30pm and told them that he is unable to attend an assessment centre and requested a home visit. They took the details of our surgery and DHs GP.

Today we received a letter from Atos denying him a home "assessment" This letter was printed two days ago (Sunday 14th May) there is no way they have even bothered to contact our surgery.

So our experience has been much like others on here. There is NO way he can go to an assessment centre. He hasnt been out of the town we live in for years.

Atos are a bunch of disabilist cunts.

HelenaDove · 16/05/2017 16:40

And im fully prepared for the fact that they havent cancelled the original assessment centre appointment. We will probably receive another letter accusing him of non attendance.

There is no way he can attend one. He is too ill and gets too out of breath.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 16/05/2017 18:20

Helena it is ridiculous that they haven't allowed a home assessment. Do check that they have cancelled the original appointment as a no show is an automatic refusal (see my experience above).

HelenaDove · 16/05/2017 18:29

Haudin that is absolutely ridiculous. And deliberate. Dont they think exams are important.

On the letter we recieved today it says they will be in contact seperately to book another appointment at an assessment centre

a. i still suspect the original hasnt been cancelled.

b. he just cant travel. He is knocking on 70 FFS with breathing problems.

Glad your DD got her award Thanks

NoHaudinMaWheest · 16/05/2017 21:58

I hope you can get them to see sense.

HelenaDove · 16/05/2017 23:48

Thankyou Haudin. Thanks

woman12345 · 17/05/2017 12:37

what NoHaudinMaWheest said Flowers Helena

LovelyBath77 · 17/05/2017 12:44

Can you ring the GPs Helena and get them to give him a note about needing a home visit due to the breathing? It also said on Benefits and work site it could help to have an MP do this too. But they are not atm are they. (MPs) might be worth a try though. That's rubbish.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 17/05/2017 13:03

Our dniece has a dd living with very severe learning and physical disabilities. Was asked to go for an esa assessment for work. Told would lose all benefits if DNA.

When arrived at local disability assessment centre was unable to enter due to no wheelchair access!!

Had to travel to town 30 miles away needing unpaid day off work for dniece to be told they were not expecting her and doctor not available.

Rebooked needing another day off work to be phoned evening before to cancel appt. Dniece unable to work that day because had cancelled care for dd.
Rebooked again and when arrived told by doctor she should never have been called due to severe disabilities😯😯
Cost dniece 3 days pay and 2 train fares.

HelenaDove · 17/05/2017 13:09

Even if my MP. ( His initials are JC ) was available it would be fruitless. He voted for the £30 a week cuts to ESA.

Enid thats disgusting.

LovelyBath77 · 17/05/2017 13:31

My MP (conservative) helped when they (DWP) 'lost' my appeal papers- he contacted their complaints dept and got it sorted...just a thought could you contact the complaints dept perhaps and explain? Not sure

HelenaDove · 17/05/2017 13:36

Im stunned. Just been told that he has been granted a home visit.

Complete turnaround. Just have to wait for letter to confirm.

LovelyBath77 · 17/05/2017 13:37

Great news, as he should be xx

LurkingHusband · 17/05/2017 13:56

Be wary ... there is a shortage of accredited assessors (not really sure why, there's clearly no special training) which means home visits are frequently cancelled (as I related upthread). Be ready for a short notice (including no notice cancellation) and make sure you call them to chase it up, and get confirmation it was their cancellation. (Once again, call recording app for mobile).

Otherwise you risk being counted as "twice cancelled" and the whole case gets referred back to the DWP to cancel DLA, since you failed to apply for PIP.

HelenaDove · 17/05/2017 14:02

LH that is precisely why i wouldnt cancel any other appointments for them if i had any.

Magpiemagpie · 17/05/2017 14:02

That's really good news Helena
Is your partner geting full rate mobilty & care at present on DLA
If he loses any on the transfer with his conditions and age It might be better to apply for attendance allowance although there is no mobility with it it's not as hard to apply for and with your husband conditions it's should be pretty simple .
My father has very similar conditions to your husband and I filled out his form for him last year and he was awarded high rate attendance allowance which is the same amount as High rate care on PIP

No interview or seeing any doctors and it was all done within a month and back dated .
It also meant that he was able to get a blue badge and a disabled parking space outside his house installed

I just filled out the forms and sent of copy's of his numerous doctors / hospital appointments and a copy of his prescriptions

PerkingFaintly · 17/05/2017 14:07

Oh good news, Helena. Fingers crossed for a fair assessment when they arrive.

Enid that bumping happens all the time at my assessment centre.

They used to be lovely and helpful and, well, professional before the disability welfare restructuring.

Since about 2008, I've never known an appointment where they weren't blowing people off. They deliberately overbook. Then by 10:30 am they're on the phone telling people not to turn up because "one of our assessors is off and we can't see you today."

I know it's a lie because on one of those occasions I had to lie on the floor in the waiting room, because they didn't have any empty assessment rooms I could lie down in (as the pre-2008 folk used to allow). So there was no room for the mythical off-for-the-day assessor.

Still, at least they now phone and tell people not to come in. They used to wait till people turned up and tell them to go straight home.

The majority of people seem to have someone who's arranged to come with them: the number of work days lost by those working folk...

HelenaDove · 17/05/2017 14:10

Hes low rate care and high rate mobility. We have talked about AA. Its something to consider. Ta. Thanks

HelenaDove · 17/05/2017 14:15

Thanks Perking. Im sorry you had to lie on the floor.

Magpiemagpie · 17/05/2017 14:22

If he's HRM & low LRC I think HR AA is pretty much the same amount I think it's £82 a week
So on that basis It's def worth applying for it as like I said his conditions are very similar to my dad and his was done within 4 weeks and no questions asked or interviews . This was last year as well so very recent
Wish you all the best though as I have read lots of your post on here

PerkingFaintly · 17/05/2017 15:00

I'm a longtime "carpet inspector," Helena.Grin

JoffreyBaratheon · 17/05/2017 16:40

Fingers crossed for you, Helena.

This whole thing is absurd, and such a waste of public money.

Ta MNers . Thanks

Letter has arrived confirming home visit.

Becca19962014 · 18/05/2017 17:46

Good news for the home assessment helena I hope they turn up as booked (not hours before as i know has happened or even a different day), one has already been changed so they'll be looking to cancel this one as there's then no back pay to last DLA payment (though I hope that doesn't happen anymore, it did to a friend last year who had no idea she wouldn't get back pay because they cancelled her home visit and the transition arrangements then didn't apply).

I've just read through the new Tory manifesto. Nice lot of word play.

They're going to get 1 million more at least into work over the next 'few years'. They're going to incentivise employers to employ the disabled by allowing them a year of free NI.

There was a lot of mention about things being equal, twice 'supported targetted only to those who need it most' and they've mentioned targetted work coaches for all disabled - that would include anyone who was able to get into support group, they've been pushing through a change which requires everyone before they're assessed to attend jobcentre to discuss work they can do.

Amusingly twice they mentioned disability hate crime Confused which I rarely experienced prior to the great disability spin machine.

It's very well written, for prejudiced bullshit.

Most people will read those parts and see 'targeted for most in need' and ignore the rest.
