A week ago yesterday, I tried to be a cool mum and went on a ridiculous slide with my 4 year old, it all went horribly and I injured my coccyx.
When I sit up with weight on that area the pain is so bad it makes me squeal and I am waking frequently in the night due to pain, but walking and standing I feel little to no pain.
I didn't think I had broken it but the pain is worse a week on. From past experience I went to the GP with a broken bone, I was told to go straight to A&E for X ray and cast. But I know a coccyx can't be cast. I don't think anything can be done!
Should I just try get on with it best as possible or go?

I wouldn't even go to GP unless it had persisted beyond about a month. Analgesics and keep moving. Ibruprofen may be better than paracetamol and gentle heat.

MuncheysMummy · 03/05/2017 09:32

I've broken my coccyx and torn muscles and ligaments at the same time in a fall from one of my horses,I got blue lighted to hospital by ambulance as I also lost consciousness however there is no treat, bent besides painkillers and anti inflammatories so just take them yourself and give it a good few weeks to recover slowly.

MuncheysMummy · 03/05/2017 09:33

*treatment (obviously!) ^

I went to A+E after I fell down the stairs, bumping all the way down, and it was still hurting like mad weeks later. Ours had triage at the time which would point you to the next door walk in GP service if necessary, but they said A+E was more appropriate.

The A+E doctor didn't even try to feel it, just said sorry, even if it's
cracked (which they suspected) we can't do anything so it's not worth taking an X-ray.

It's taken me literally years to be able to sit down completely without pain again. Sorry OP, I know that's not what you want to hear, but probably best to prepare for the long haul here. It does get better over time though! Flowers

Ooo, ouch! I did something similar slipping on steps a few years ago. Nothing really helped except painkillers and a donut cushion. If you're worried, then go see your GP. At least they can put your mind at rest or refer you if needed.

If it helps, mine was just bruised and although it did take a few very painful weeks to heal fully, I'm now as good as new.

peripericardium · 03/05/2017 09:41

X-rays are only justified if they will change treatment. Unfortunately there's no treatment for coccyx pain, so irradiating your reproductive organs is too risky.

elephantscansing · 03/05/2017 09:42

You have my sympathy. I did just the same years ago on a slide at soft play. Flowers to you.

I agree with getting a doughnut cushion to sit on, and painkillers.

Mrsmadevans · 03/05/2017 09:57

I went to A & E with this and yes I had fractured my coccyx but they really don't have any treatment for it . They just gave me pain killers and told me to carry on as normal!! It killed but after about 2 weeks it was fine hope you feel better soon op

squirrelspatchcock · 03/05/2017 10:05

Supermagicsmile I could have written this! I did mine about 30 years ago (another horse related one!) and it was painful for years - sitting on hard chairs, at the cinema etc. For a while I had to get someone to help me stand up as the action of going from sitting to standing, and presumably putting pressure on the area was agony.

Has faded over the years and only gives me trouble if I sit on a hard chair for too long now. I can't remember if I saw a doctor about it, but I had a ring cushion so I must have - no internet then for advice!

Good luck OP, I hope it fades quickly for you

BollardDodger · 03/05/2017 10:26

X-rays are only justified if they will change treatment.
Surely an x-ray would be justified for a diagnosis, so you also know how not to aggravate something?

peripericardium · 03/05/2017 10:37

Bollard coccyx pain can be diagnosed from a physical exam, there's no advantage to an x-ray. The royal college of radiographers have a policy that coccyx pain does not warrant an a-xray because oof the radiation risk.

peachgreen · 03/05/2017 11:32

Eesh, I feel for you. I fractured mine around 10 years ago and it STILL causes me problems - I can't sit in the same position for any length of time so am a massive wriggler! I remember the pain was just constant and sickening, and didn't go away no matter how I sat, stood or laid down. Blech.

Unfortunately there really isn't anything they can do - but you could at least see your GP about some better pain relief in the meantime. And yes, doughnut cushion!
