WIBU to take 10 paracetamol in 24 hours?

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 01/05/2017 21:24

Bad period pain. Took 2 this morning at 3am, 2 at 9:15, 2 at 13:30, 2 at 17:45. WIBU to take 2 more at about 22:30, just before I go to bed. I can't take ibroprofen or anything like that as 1) I don't have any and 2) I can't swallow tablets, and can therefore only have one brand of paracetamol, crushed up (anything other than this one brand tastes so bad I nearly throw up) on a biscuit, or disolvable tablets/calpol.

I would call the NHS helpline and ask about it.

Lindorballs · 01/05/2017 21:33

Please don't do this. Although you would probably be fine even small overdoses of paracetamol can cause liver damage and there is no way of predicting how your liver will respond. It's just not worth the risk.
You can buy liquid ibuprofen for children - could you try this? Appreciate it's tricky if you can't get out tonight but get some tomorrow and try gentle stretching, massage and hot water bottle for tonight if you can't get ibuprofen today and get some tomorrow. Don't risk a paracetamol overdose

RoganJosh · 01/05/2017 21:35

I would take them, given that the gaps have been 4 hours and over. I realised that's going against the limit per 24 hours though, but I would.
In a&e drs have given my children more than the official limit of paracetamol which is suggesting to me there is a little leeway. Maybe. I'm loathe to tell you what to do though!

Wolfiefan · 01/05/2017 21:37

You can't take an overdose. If this is a regular thing see your Pharmacist for alternatives.

TroysMammy · 01/05/2017 21:37

Dosage is maximum of 8 in 24 hours. I wouldn't risk it.

No because that would be over 1g four times in 24 hours.

RoganJosh children's doses are worked out by weight, and there are dose bandings, we do not overdose them.

peachgreen · 01/05/2017 21:39

My chemist friend says that almost all guidelines on medication are massively oversensitive APART FROM paracetamol. She'll happily take a double dose of ibuprofen but she avoids paracetamol where possible. So I'm always careful with paracetamol doses now.

BagelDog · 01/05/2017 21:39

Children often can have more than the age adjusted dose on the bottle if you calculate it accurately by weight. This doesn't necessarily work the same for adults and even minor overdoses can have consequences. But children's ibuprofen is strawberry flavoured and not too bad, and works very well for period pain esp taken alongside paracetamol.

BagelDog · 01/05/2017 21:40

Oh and you can happily take ibuprofen four times a day for a few days as long as not elderly or have kidney issues.

WineAndTiramisu · 01/05/2017 21:40

As a one off it would be fine, but then you have to take less over the next 24 hours, so if it's going to be as bad tomorrow, don't!

HermioneJeanGranger · 01/05/2017 21:42

I really wouldn't mess with paracetamol.

Spam88 · 01/05/2017 21:46

I really wouldn't. Any overdose is still an overdose and can cause liver damage. Is there nowhere you could get some liquid ibuprofen from?

steff13 · 01/05/2017 21:51

How many milligrams is a dose? I think you're talking about acetaminophen, and the tablets I have here are 500 mg each. I wouldn't take any more than two in 8 hours. Here, the FDA says 10 pills is a dangerous dose, and acetaminophen is the #1 cause of acute liver failure here in the US.

Monsterpage · 01/05/2017 21:53

Don't do it. You have to be really really careful with paracetamol and other drugs to follow directions.

I know to my detriment 7 months ago thinking 'another 2 will be ok'. I was very ill and nearly hospitalised.

I am an intelligent woman who thought it would be ok. It wasn't.

Therealslimshady1 · 01/05/2017 21:55

Too much Paracetamol is dangerous to your liver, please don't

Boophis · 01/05/2017 21:55

When I was in hospital for a suspected staggered overdose of paracetemol (taling every four hours for two days -toothache) I was told that taking more than the max dose isn't necessarily effective for pain relief - after a certain level it ceases to have an effect. I would take ibuprofen instead, alternate with paracetemol. An overdose, even a staggered one could damage your liver

Boophis · 01/05/2017 21:58

If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, there is a lemon flavoured nurofen that dissolves on the tongue.

phoenixtherabbit · 01/05/2017 21:59

I personally would. As much as technically it is an overdose.

I just think there are much stronger drugs that they give you much more of, a couple of paracetamol will be fine.

I must say I am not advising you do this or take anything I am just saying that I personally would. I'm not a doctor or pharmacist and don't have any medical knowledge what so ever.

Ring 111 I think!

Bettyspants · 01/05/2017 22:00

Staff yes 500mg usually 1gram an adult dose. Sorry op paracetamol is not something I'd advise my friends to do and I know their medical history, not worth the risk . I've seen a couple of unintentional over dosed with very small 'extra amounts' such as you and paracetamol levels on bloods have been safe levels with no effect on liver function. But everyone is different and I would respect the dose and wait a few hours. I'd advise leaving 6 hrs in between doses tomorrow so you know you'll be taking the max. Someone above suggested solphadine which is paracetamol 500mg and with 8mg or 12.5mg codiene per tablet (co-codamol) so a no to get for tonight but worth asking otc for tomorrow.

Bettyspants · 01/05/2017 22:01

Sorry that should read 'steff ' as in above poster not 'staff '!

treaclesoda · 01/05/2017 22:02

I wouldn't do it. I personally know of someone who died as a result of what was really quite a small overdose of paracetamol in the grand scheme of things, (and of course I've read cases in newspapers etc as well). The relief you might get isn't worth risking that for.

Zhan · 01/05/2017 22:02

You need ibuprofen. Taking a paracetamol overdose really isn't a sensible option.

BeaderBird · 01/05/2017 22:04

YABU don't do this.

TheFairyCaravan · 01/05/2017 22:06

No, don't do it.

You could always take some dispersable aspirin.
