To wonder if plastic chopping boards are safe?

My plastic chopping board has tiny grooves that you can see where I've chopped food.

I would have thought that traces of plastic have come off the board as I've chopped and got attached to the food and then cooked along with it.

Surely that's not safe?

I would worry more about bacteria not being cleaned properly from the grooves. I have a stone one and I love it it's doesn't scratch and cleans really easily.

OrlandoTheCat · 01/05/2017 18:28

I've never seen a stone one...where d'you get that?

I think what you're saying is probably true but at least you bleach them if need be.

AgentProvocateur · 01/05/2017 18:32

I've been using them for 20-odd years and I'm still alive

OrlandoTheCat · 01/05/2017 18:33

its not the germs I was worrying about...it's the heated plastic (potentially)...

Doesn't a stone chopping board knacker your knives?

Op change to wood boards if you are worried about plastic.

GraceGrape · 01/05/2017 18:36

Aren't wooden chopping boards supposed to be a no-no for raw meat?

BarbarianMum · 01/05/2017 18:39

Yeah they're really dangerous. That's why hundreds of thousands of people round the country use them daily without any appreciable I'll effect. Hmm

PS those who don't think eating bleach is good for you run them through the dishwasher or wash them.

MrTumblesbitch · 01/05/2017 18:40

I love that we have just ruled out plastic, wood and stone chopping boards for various reasons. I'm gunna learn to ninja chop in mid air for maximum safety effect.....

Lj8893 · 01/05/2017 18:40

Almost all professional kitchens will use plastic chopping boards.

Renaissance2017 · 01/05/2017 18:43

Surely the groves are just where the knife slice through, but doesn't actually cut and plastic off?

LaundryQueenHatesBunfights · 02/05/2017 07:43

We use a glass chopping board for meat and wooden for everything else

SharkiraSharkira · 02/05/2017 08:07

All professional kitchens (at least in this country) HAVE to have plastic chopping boards, it's a Health and safety thing! It's because you can wash plastic ones properly whereas other materials can crack, warp, shatter etc.

Stone and glass chopping boards look nice but are terrible for knives and will blunt them. Wood is ok if you clean it properly, butchers tend to use wooden boards, just really thick heavy ones!

Wood apparently harbours less bacteria but plastic goes through the dishwasher so is the only acceptable option in this house.

NotEvenListening · 02/05/2017 18:57

Sorry for the late reply. It was from b&m but I bought it years ago, I think it's granite. I've had glass and plastic and I've dropped and shattered them or burnt them with pans. I've never noticed the knives going blunt tbh

Weatherforecaster · 02/05/2017 19:35

My goodness. I've heard it all.
