to be irritated by people's fear of internet hackers?

DH tried to order some small plastic items for our business from a supplier. The items are really cheap, like 10p each. He went online to their website but couldn't order online so had to call them.

The lady he spoke to told him that they had removed the online facility as they has been targeted by 'hackers'! Apparently, the hackers had gone onto their website and done something which meant that the Cart would empty itself when people logged off their computer.

I wanted to call and tell her that this was happening because she was too cheap to install a Cart Recovery App. DH said I'm mean.

Am I the only one irritated by people scared of the internet? I know so many people who are scared to engage with it on any level in case it clears out their bank account. My MIL won't go on Facebook for exactly this reason.

AIBU?

Although the business you use I your example did engage with it and did get hacked.

So your example doesn't work.

isupposeitsverynice · 01/05/2017 09:40

A shopping cart emptying when you leave the page is poor design surely, not hacking? What would be the point of that?

icanteven · 01/05/2017 09:40

Although the business you use I your example did engage with it and did get hacked.

I think that OP's point is that they did not get hacked - they did not know how to use their own website, and had not installed the utterly basic plug-in that would have retained the contents of the cart for the user on the next visit the way Amazon does, for instance.

Ariawyn · 01/05/2017 09:40

My family won't online bank because they don't trust it

My DSis finally bought something online last month only because she had no choice , she won't even use amazon because she has to put her card in so asks me to order for her.... Hmm it's ok for me to do it

icanteven · 01/05/2017 09:42

Oh, and to answer the OP's question, yes - I completely share your feelings here.

Hacking does of course happen - I'm a web designer and my own site was hacked last year and spam links injected. I was ranking REALLY WELL for a variety of niche porn terms for a while - my Semrush findings were v. interesting reading. Blush But it was my own fault, of course.

SmileEachDay · 01/05/2017 09:42

Oh I see! Sure. Sorry OP, it's a super example then Grin

In which case it would a lovely thing to call them/email and explain that - if done in a helpful way? Sounds like lack of knowledge rather than entrenched Luddite-ism.

treaclesoda · 01/05/2017 09:43

My parents in law drive a ten mile round trip to withdraw cash from the cash machine outside the branch of the bank that they bank with, because they don't trust that they will not be defrauded by using a different one. Confused

treaclesoda · 01/05/2017 09:44

Sorry, I know that isn't internet related but it does tie in with the 'fear of modern technology' thing.

PeaFaceMcgee · 01/05/2017 09:47

Yanbu. It's just ignorant.

MycatsaPirate · 01/05/2017 09:49

oh god yes and the word 'hacked' is misused too much.

People saying their fb has been hacked when it's just been cloned is a good one. No, it's not been hacked, someone has just copied your photos and made a new profile in the same name. It irritates me beyond belief.

PeaFaceMcgee · 01/05/2017 09:49

But at the same time I do worry about older relatives happily clicking links in unsolicited phishing emails. Hopefully they've learnt better now but it took some time.

MrTumblesbitch · 01/05/2017 09:53

My mum does that too treacle, but only if she REALLY has to. She'd much rather go into the bank and take cash out over the counter - "because they know me there and won't give my money to anyone else" Hmm

MakeUpMyRoom · 01/05/2017 10:19

Misunderstanding of terms doesn't bother me as such (cloning vs hacking and virus vs worm etc) but blaming shoddy design like in the OP's example on hacking does grate a little.

I also worry about the current generation of tech-users. They're so hidden behind their nice UI and apps they often don't understand the nitty-gritty of it all and certainly don't understand internet security.

WindyWednesday · 01/05/2017 10:21

MIL had her Facebook account hacked and they somehow managed to access her emails and banking details and she lost quite a bit of money.

No idea how it happened.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 01/05/2017 10:55

For some small businesses getting to grips with technology can be very expensive. Few can afford an IT specialist and that throws them into the arms of consultants who add little of true value and charge fees which are out of all proportion to their turn-over.

For myself, who deals with technology every day of my working life (it's what the company does for the most part) and use the internet to purchase supplies and services for the firm, I have resisted personal online banking. I don't trust my bank's security and don't trust my own either.

stumblymonkeyreturns · 01/05/2017 11:01

YANBU.

My DM (who is only 53) sends me cheques. Cheques!

WTAF am I supposed to do with a cheque when I work during bank opening hours. She won't even do a transfer with her own bank over the telephone Hmm

BocaDeTrucha · 01/05/2017 11:13

Yabvu.... As someone's whose husband has just lost over 30,000 euros from his business because of hackers, and he is an IT specialist, you are being pretty unreasonable.

Freshprincess · 01/05/2017 11:15

How do you know they hadn't been hacked? if the cart emptying itself was a new occurrence then she's right to be a bit suspicious, although it's more likely to be poor web design.

However, your point about people not engaging At all I agree with. My sister hates ordering anything online because they're all out to steal her money. She's only in her forties as well.

WonkoTheSane42 · 01/05/2017 11:22

*MIL had her Facebook account hacked and they somehow managed to access her emails and banking details and she lost quite a bit of money.

No idea how it happened.*

Let me guess - she used the same password everywhere.

WindyWednesday · 01/05/2017 11:30

Wonko I don't know if she did, but it linked her to a porn mag and it all got a bit nasty.

KittyVonCatsington · 01/05/2017 11:32

Hey, if even Mark Zuckerberg can have his Facebook account hacked numerous times, I think it is pretty harsh to be so dismissive of other peoples' issues regarding the security of the Internet. It all sounds so very superior.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 01/05/2017 11:39

Most of my extended family refuse to shop online because it's not safe, but are perfectly happy for me to order them stuff with my Amazon account Hmm And to add insult to injury, I then get recommendations based on the things they buy which are absolutely not things I would ever want.
