To not understand why some people drape coats/jackets/cardigans over their shoulders

I'm looking at you in particular Victoria Beckham. What's the point? Is it comfy? Surely it's easier to actually put it on rather than having two empty, rather forlorn looking sleeves left hanging and unwanted?

I'm with you OP, it makes no sense to me.

ScarletForYa · 30/04/2017 13:21

I always think it looks frumpy.

SleepWhatSleep1 · 30/04/2017 13:22

Dd1 does this to be superman. Dd2 is forced into this when she's cold and refusing a coat - we compromise on an "Anna" cape. Or she does it when being an octopus (she can't count).
I don't do is as I gesticulate, or do something, and it flies off. Only people without a gazillion things to do while chasing 3 children and carrying all the baby crap can do this. Maybe it's a sign to say "look! I'm so fabulous I don't need to use my arms! I have people for that doncha know" Wink

happypoobum · 30/04/2017 13:24

Zilpha Grin

I agree with scarlet I think it looks really frumpy and matronly.

robinia · 30/04/2017 13:24

I do it when I'm feeling a little cold but when I put it on I start feeling hot. It's usually gone on and come off again at least once.
Am I being fashionable? (ever hopeful!)

wornoutboots · 30/04/2017 13:27

fasten the top button and pretend it's a superhero cape! ;-)

skippingdolefully · 30/04/2017 14:50

Prone to a hot flush... this way i'm neither too hot or too chilly.

bigtapdancingpimp · 30/04/2017 15:16

Women in Liverpool and Newcastle never have this issue. Night on the town in January, -10c.... who needs a jacket? Grin

BackforGood · 30/04/2017 15:26

I don't understand how so many intelligent people on MN profess not to understand perfectly normal things

This ^

I don't follow fashion, or celebrity photos, but it's not unusual for it to be a bit too hot to have your cardi / jacket on, with arms in sleeves, and yet a bit nippy without anything across your shoulders / tops of arms.
Not sure how that can be difficult to understand.

elevenclips · 30/04/2017 15:30

I wouldn't do it, I'd think I'd drop the coat onto the floor and it'd therefore get muddy/dirty. In order to keep it balanced, it'd be too restrictive to move about freely or bend down or whatever

Batgirlspants · 30/04/2017 15:34

Nah looks frumpy and old fashioned.

I like VB though

Asmoto · 30/04/2017 15:34

I expect in the case of celebrities, it's part of a carefully crafted 'look'. I can't do it as the cardigan always falls off - I've got quite slopey shoulders.

Blimey01 · 30/04/2017 15:36

I tried it once aswell. It just felt too posh and wouldn't stay on...

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 30/04/2017 15:37

It does seem to be a trendy look at the moment. It's not just because people are a bit nippy and can't be bothered to put their arms in. It's purposefully worn like that.
If you're walking around shoulder scaping, you have to walk carefully, not making any sudden arm movements. It looks really stiff and awkward to me. And pretentious.

SnickersWasAHorse · 30/04/2017 15:40

I'm with you op. Either wear the thing or don't.
It's all a bit tiny fragile woman for me. It's like having your boyfriend's jacket on.

Bubblemumma1 · 30/04/2017 15:42

I've just read out the arsecape comment to DH and we've had a good giggle about it.

WindwardCircle · 30/04/2017 15:43

We used to do this at school back in the 80s, hideous mid blue jumpers artfully draped over even more hideous blue and white striped shapeless summer dresses. We thought we were it we did Grin.

ILookedintheWater · 30/04/2017 15:51

I like it. It looks jolly, as pp said: I think it's all about being a superhero. Like Mr Poppy in the Nativity films.

I do this with trousers. I tuck them into the elastic on my knickers and wear them like an arse cape.*

First time I've laughed at a comment on MN Grin

Housewife2010 · 30/04/2017 22:19

"I don't understand how so many intelligent people on MN profess not to understand perfectly normal things"

Whoever said I was intelligent?

Not you specifically OP - it's just that there are so many threads started with people purporting 'not to understand' things that people do, just because they are different. Things like watching certain Tv shows, shoes off or on in the house Grin
