To want to move to Shropshire?

I currently live in Exeter, but the house prices are too high for me to buy here, and I'm a little further away from family than I'd like.

I'm thinking of moving to Shropshire. It's about equidistant from my family and my partner's family, house prices look reasonable (in some areas) and it looks like a nice place to live.

The only thing I'm slightly concerned about is employment. Can anyone who lives in the area tell me anything about the employment situation? I currently work in admin so would be looking for something similar.

GinnyBaker, that sounds like a lovely place to live! I don't think I could handle just one bus a week, though, so I'd have to live somewhere a little closer to town.

PinguForPresident, is Telford really that bad? I'm hearing mixed reviews!

Don't live in Telford. Honestly, don't. It is soulless.

I used to teach in one of them there Newport grammars when I lived in Shrewsbury Grin

I live in Telford (in one of the ropey areas mentioned above) and it's great. We are on a main bus route and in catchment for an outstanding primary and a good secondary. There is another good secondary at the other end of our road. The town centre has had a lot of regeneration and is very much on the up. If I want full on shopping, we have 35-50 min train ride to Birmingham or 45 min drive to Merry Hill. It's very much a town of two halves. I teach on the opposite side of town and can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a student in my neck of the woods! Lots of positives to Telford- I moved here more or less by accident and I've never regretted it.

You need a car to live in shropshire.

You can manage on public transport if you live in telford or shrewsbury. But why would you live there when the choice is so much vaster (you might as well live in any town anywhere if you choose telford).

People in their 90s are still driving in shropshire. Bonus is that they are well enough to be driving into their 90s (despite the apparent lack of medicine one of the previous posters mentioned). Downside is that they are a little slower on the single track roads

I can't be much help but I lived in bridgenorth for a while in the late 90s. It was a lovely place although the house did flood a couple of times. I worked in Redditch and the commute was manageable.

Another Shropshire lass here and Shrewsbury is lovely with lots going on. Personally I don't like Telford as much but they do have the ice skating so we go there sometimes. House prices outside Shrewsbury are cheaper than the town but as others said, you probably do need a car although the bus service is fairly regular from my village.

I used to live and work in Exeter which is another beautiful place. The traffic is quieter here and the people talk faster and are more inquisitive (in a good way!) but if you are happy there then you will be happy here.

We live in North Shropshire. Lovely town but not well served by amenities. We have to run two cars as public transport is rubbish. Dh also always has to travel for work. However we are an hour to lots of major cities and train from Stafford to London is only 1 HR 20 but we also have the added bonus of lovely countryside.

We used to live in north Shropshire and I commuted daily to Liverpool whilst husband worked at Manchester airport.

We lived right out in the countryside so no public transport. There was one bus a week into town on a Wednesday but you had to ring and book it the Tuesday! If you didn't book it, it didn't come!

I later worked in Telford and if I'm honest, I really didn't like it there. Soulless place. Shrewsbury is gorgeous though and I liked Newport very much too 😊

We actually left Shropshire to move to Devon! We were maybe 14 miles from Exeter just inside the national park. I much preferred Devon to Shropshire but it is hideously expensive.
