To be annoyed in Poundland?

Ok, first of all, I know Poundland now often sell stuff that's more than £1, which is annoying in itself. But today I was walking round and, in the middle of a normal display, were a lot of leggings. They had prices on the actual packaging of £5/£6 but they weren't Poundland branded and it looked like when you get stock from other shops being sold off cheaply. It wasn't a brand I recognised but the prices were also in Euro so I thought it was maybe from an Irish shop, you know the sort of thing I mean? Anyway I have definitely bought stuff before that was priced on the packaging but was only £1 (very very common with boxes of cereal etc).

However it went through the till at £6, and when I expressed surprise and said I didn't want them at that price (as it's not even especially cheap!) the woman said that I was the second person to do that today. But she seemed very surprised that I would think they would be £1 "because it says it on the packet". But they weren't Poundland branded and they weren't at the edge of the store where the other higher priced stuff is either. I didn't kick off or anything but I did think if they're going to randomly put higher priced stuff around the shop then what's the bloody point of it being Poundland?

She did say she'd tell the manager to make sure it was labelled more clearly, so I must have got my point across.

Whoops wrong thread Grin

IME all shops have tricks to try to get you to spend more. It's why they move stuff around - so that in wandering around muttering about where the fucking eggs are you think "oh, look, marmalade, I'd forgotten about that". Or they'll put the last escalator away from most of the escalators so you wander through electrical goods to find it.

If in doubt, ask them to do a price check before you buy it.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 29/04/2017 20:02

Yes it should be renamed as Pound (it might be more although it's completely unclear from our lack of price tags) Land.

TheFifthKey · 29/04/2017 20:07

They were Pep and Co (which I've never heard of!) and the labelling was in their font/colour, not Poundland's, so I don't think it's stupid to assume that I could disregard it!

YABU. It said £6, it cost £6. Simple.

tallwivglasses · 29/04/2017 20:16

What annoys me more is buying a load of stuff from Poundland, then popping across to Bargain Buys and finding the same stuff for 99p Angry

Kpo58 · 29/04/2017 20:18

YANBU many of the higher priced goods aren't worth as much as they are selling them for and/or are poor quality.

I did find it odd when they sold the packets of 5 Cadburys Cream Eggs for £2 when the 3 pack ones were £1.

CheeseQueen · 29/04/2017 20:27

YABU. It said £6, it cost £6. Simple

But....but..... it's POUNDLAND!! They based the whole shop on "everything's a pound." Now it's all "Everything's a Pound Unless It's Not and Then It's More."
Although I suppose that wouldn't get the customers as much due to not being as catchy....

TathitiPete · 29/04/2017 20:30

No wonder they altered their name to Dealz in Ireland! Grin

poisonedbypen · 29/04/2017 20:32

Ours is called "Poundland & more" or something like that. I'm guessing that's why.

FatGirlWithChocolate · 29/04/2017 20:32

We had a 99p shop growing up in my hometown (long before there really were such things)..and it was taken to court because it sold some things that were not 99p..had to change it's name..I'm surprised that £land can get off with it..

QuintessentialShadow · 29/04/2017 20:33

I wonder how much people earn, when involved in production of items costing as little as 1 pound, when cost of materials, other production costs, and shipping, has been deducted.

Cant be much. Maybe 1 pound is no longer a realistic price, if companies are trying to pay fair wages?

What does poundland pay for their stock, to still make a profit, after paying salaries to their own staff, rent and business rates for their outlets?

Cant be much left to the person involved in making bras or leggings for a pound each, and I wonder how much the production company sold them for to poundland, 50p?

TheFirstMrsDV · 29/04/2017 20:35

Its annoying when things are priced up in a confusing way.
IME Morrisons are terrible for this. They do it so much it must be on purpose.

i.e. they will put prices on the shelves that do not relate to the items on the shelves but the items that are on the shelves are very similar. Similar enough to make you put them in your sodding basket.

WRT to the OP, if you were not the first person to complain you can bet that a fair few people bought them because they a. didn't notice if they had a ton of stuff or b. bought them because they had decided they wanted them at a quid and still wanted them at six (although they probably wouldn't have picked them up at six).

There is a till at my local Poundland with a tiny, hand written sign on it saying 'cash only' in biro. You can't see it unless you are right in front of it and looking in that direction.
One cashier was getting right huffy that people kept ignoring it. She was slagging off stupid customers (I was one of them and had moved to the next till). I suggested that if 'loads' of customers were making the mistake she might consider making a BIGGER SIGN.
She looked amazed.
Stupid fucking sign is still there.

TheFirstMrsDV · 29/04/2017 20:37

quint I vaguely remember there being a documentary on that very subject some time ago.
I didnt watch it though. So not very helpful Grin

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/04/2017 20:48

So a change of name to 'Multiple Poundzland' is in order. Plus, of course, outlawing any jokes regarding 'I went in to Poundland and asked, 'How much is this?'' Coz, clearly, the answer is now 'However much we say it is.' YANBU, they clearly marketed themselves initially, and very successfully, on a certain premise, this looks like they always had an intent but wanted to introduce it by stealth.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/04/2017 20:51

Oh and quint you're absolutely right, but you did not have to check out discount outlets to find outlets selling on goods that have brought the producers/workers minimal slave wages. You can find that at much higher end stores too unfortunately.

Gabilan · 29/04/2017 20:57

As far as I'm aware, part of the success of Poundland is selling you stuff for a pound that would actually cost less elsewhere. I noticed it buying things like bars of soap. So they get you in there on the premise that it's cheap and much of it is a bargain but you will also pick up some of the stuff on which they make much more of a % profit.

I've also noticed end of line stuff in there. Yes, they are exploitative but unfortunately I suspect not more or less so than many more expensive places.

Sprinklestar · 29/04/2017 20:57

YANBU. It's called Poundland, ergo stock should cost £1 per item. Same with dollar stores in the US. You're a dollar store, sell items for $1. Anything else is just a confusing mess of tat and false pretenses.

QuintessentialShadow · 29/04/2017 21:01

Judas, probably. I am sure you are right. It was just that the price so low as a pound MUST really take advantage of some poor folks. However, we dont know if the same goes for high end stores, just that they make gazillions more.

A BRA for a pound. Think about it. If you pay 12 pounds in Next for example, you sort of dont think slave labour was involved at all.

But they should change their name to PoundZland, or PoundSland. (but that makes me think of slander....)

AwaywiththePixies27 · 29/04/2017 21:25

Of course people dont support sweatshops Hmm

We just all dont have the disposable income to always choose ethical clothing.

ilovesooty · 29/04/2017 21:33

Items are 90p in one Poundland near my work since Poundworld opened in the same block.

TheFifthKey · 29/04/2017 22:09

90p! £6! They want to get their act together, at this point they're basically just a shop of lies.

skinnymalinkmalojin · 29/04/2017 22:25

www.pepandco.com Their site says that they are partners with Poundland. I don't recognise it as an Irish brand.

rightsaidfrederickII · 29/04/2017 22:28

Poundworld got in trouble for this a few years back, but only because they claimed that "everything's £1" www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/poundworlds-everything-1-slogan-banned-by-watchdog-after-3-item-is-spotted-by-shopper-9782854.html

BouleBaker · 29/04/2017 22:30

It's very annoying. I picked up a paw patrol purse in the middle of a shelf with DS, and was pleased to find it. When I got to the till it was £3. No labels anywhere to be seen. Cheeky fuckers,. The whole point of Poundland is that IT'S A POUND.
