To think women shouldn't feel awkward talking about periods?

I came in to work and my colleague asked if I'd been to the gym (big topic of conversation this week)

I replied I haven't that morning because I'd started my period.

And she pulled this face Confused and said oh well we don't need to discuss that.

I consider this woman a friend and maybe it was too much info but to me we're all women and period talk doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I have absolutely no desire or need to discuss my periods with anyone except maybe a HCP.

I am not overly keen on hearing about anyone else's either.

Some people overshare way too much.

To the people saying "its a bodily function and its boring, you wouldn't mention going for a poo" the op wasn't talking in detail about her period, it was relevant to mention it because it stopped her going to the gym. In the same way you might say "I had a cold so didnt go to the gym", which is completely different to just announcing your off for a poo.
All women should be able to mention their periods if they want, especially in this context. I wouldn't hesitate to say "I'm on my period" in this context, just as I wouldn't hesitate to say I have a headache or a cold. I'm not gonna walk into work and loudly announce it but if its relevant of course women should just be able to say it.

I do mention it if I feel like shit or tired. My stomach always plays up when I'm on so can often feel run down when I'm on. I tell DH when I'm on. Just part of life don't see the big issue.

I loved that video Applebite!

In what way do you want it talked about? I don't talk about poo, snot, wee, blood or Phlegm, when I go to the toilet if I feel the need I don't say poo/ wee I say I just need to go to the toilet. If I'm I'll I say I'm ill unless THEY want me to give details. It's nothing to be embarrassed about but in what context does it need to be spoken about more? If you have any issues I'd think it natural to speak to women as they have actual experience in it? Like I wouldn't expect a man to go to a woman with an issue about his dick/ balls/ semen
