To use the supermarket carpark as a shortcut?

There is a bridge I drive over a few times a week during rush hour. Three quite big roads lead onto it, with two of the three also going through a hellish roundabout too before that.

Conveniently theres a small road which leads down to a big supermarket next to Hellish Roundabout which avoids all main roads etc. On leaving the supermarket carpark I usually turn left and follow the roads home, but if I pop there then need to go over the bridge, I turn right and a small road leads almost directly onto the bridge.

Up until now Ive only ever used the supermarket "shortcut" on times when I actually need to go into the shop. However a few days now of sat waiting on these main roads, for some days up to 20 mins!! Im wondering if it would be unreasonable to take small road to supermarket, enter the carpark then leave straight after and take the slip onto the bridge?

I would do it for sure!

Years ago I used to live in Birmingham and work in Stafford. There is a service station on the M6 with a really long slip road so the exit from the services is a good mile or so further south than the entrance. When traffic was really bad (quite frequently as this was before they built the M6 Toll) I used to drive through the services to avoid a mike stretch of stationery traffic!

Tesco!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 26/04/2017 17:53

In that case it's fine, you can absolutely cut through Tesco.

AmserGwin · 26/04/2017 17:58

I wouldn't think twice, do it

NapQueen · 26/04/2017 18:05

I timed one if the main roads onto the bridge today. Traffic free it takes roughly 1 minute to drive from top to bottom if you get all green lights. Today it took me 17 minutes. Often the lights went green and red again without any movement because its all backed up from the two other main roads also trying to get over the bridge.

Fuck it. Im doing it.

I do this to get into a very busy A road near us. I drive straight through a M&S garage. I know lots of people who do. As long as it is safe I dont think it's a problem.

StarryIllusion · 26/04/2017 18:17

Tesco is blue.

Leeds2 · 26/04/2017 18:21

I do this at my Tesco, although not to avoid a queue but to avoid a junction I find particularly difficult! I do shop there at other times though, which eases my conscience a little.

EleanorAbernathy · 26/04/2017 18:25

Do it! I regularly avoid two sets of long traffic lights by cutting through Morrisons, usually with at least one other car doing the same thing! Grin

StereophonicallyChallenged · 26/04/2017 18:27

I was just about to ask Op if she was in Leeds leeds2 Wink

Its Morrisons by the bridge here and not Tesco Grin but I think I know which tesco you mean by the horrid queue/roundabout!

Hold up Lambbone, what?? Through Asda?

ShelaghTurner · 26/04/2017 18:35

And I would totally use the short cut and not give it moment's thought.

apotheke · 26/04/2017 18:35

I would totally do that, so long as you respect the rules and speed limits of the car park. But don't tell everyone or it might get busy.

I used to do a similar thing on my daily commute. There was a long slip road with a left turn that everyone took and an empty right slip. I took the right slip, drove a 1/4 mile up the country road and turned in a wide road entrance then sailed back down past the motorway exit slip.

However I would never countenance driving down the right lane of the slip road and forcing my way in to the left one at the end, that would be rude. Yes I realise the logic is probably skewed.

CottonSock · 26/04/2017 18:35

I shortcut through the hospital sometimes (don't shoot me)

NapQueen · 26/04/2017 18:36

Not Leeds, no, and yes it is our usual supermarket as it is on the way home for both dh and I. We shop there 3 times a week usually (top ups and a weekly) as it is the closest to us both in the car and walking.

I used to do the above through services on the m6 when I lived there... local knowledge

ThreeLeggedHaggis · 26/04/2017 18:36

It's weird that others haven't caught on, which makes me think there might be a reason... but I'd probably have to do it to see!

Life is too short to sit in traffic jams, and you won't be making anybody else's journey longer with your short cut.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 26/04/2017 18:40

I cut through Sainsbury's every day to get to work. It cuts off a hugely busy junction where most of the cars are going straight and I want to go left.

NapQueen · 26/04/2017 18:43

tree I think most other commuters are coming from further away than me, joining the bigger roads further back. The road I use to the supermarket is basically a little side road or two down from my house, so unless they want ti do it via my home Grin
