To think saying I'm pissed off isn't swearing?

Just that really. Not said in front of any children, but you'd have honestly thought I'd f'd and blinded the worst swear word under the sun by this woman's reaction. I've never thought of the word pissed as swearing.

If you had said that to me I would have said what the assistant said - and i swear a lot.

Pleasedontbelikeme · 22/04/2017 23:08

Definitely swearing. DH is from foreign and once declared to my (church-going non-swearing - I was shocked once when she said damn!) Mother, "It's pissing it down outside". I was mortified, but he didn't realise he was sweating!

AtSea1979 · 22/04/2017 23:13

bollard your levels are spot on.

Though I did tell DS today that he was being a shit. I was mortified.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/04/2017 23:15

See I don't think any word that is also a name can possibly be a swear word - so dick, fanny, willy etc.

GlitterGlassEye · 22/04/2017 23:23

Gash is a horrible term for a vagina.

Bastard, Dick, Cunt, Shit/Shite, Fuck are level 1 for me.

Arse, Piss, Twat are level 2 ( Twat just because not everybody knows what it actually means).

Bloody is level 3 on its own. Quite non-offensive really apart from a few ppl like my gran. "Bloody's in the bible...".

ChangingStates · 22/04/2017 23:27

Really surprised at the responses on here. Very low level if swearing at all- for me same level as crap or bloody hell etc. Certainly not as bad as bastard and wouldn't have thought any adult would be offended by it. From previous posts guess I'm wrong about that though!

AtSea1979 · 22/04/2017 23:29

Twat is definitely higher up than shite!

INeedToEat · 22/04/2017 23:37

For me, you was just saying how you felt.

You wasn't making an observation about someone else.

To me it's no worse than saying 'I'm annoyed'.

LonginesPrime · 22/04/2017 23:46

Yes, agree - gash is an absolutely horrible term.

Ameliablue · 22/04/2017 23:46

It's not something I'd be offended by a friend saying but saying it to a stranger or someone working in customer service would be.

JeNeBaguetteRien · 22/04/2017 23:56

WTF, how is sodding a swear word?!

There is a difference between you saying you were pissed off (fine) and you telling her to piss off (not fine).

I think she was being over the top.
Piss, crap, bloody hell, shit, wanker are not offensive to my ears but neither is cunt and I know that's a Bad Word.

ToughItOut · 23/04/2017 00:22

I've never actually heard the term gash. Literally ever until this thread! I'd definately rate bastard above pissed, I would never use that word when talking to a stranger. Like changingstates said, for me pissed is on the same level as saying something like crap. It's rated lower then bugger or bloody for me and I just couldnt see an adult getting offended by it. I am guessing they are from a different part of the country to me perhaps. I'll just be more careful what I say in future!

PeppermintTeaPlease · 23/04/2017 00:26

I'm American.

Americans do say both "pissed off" and "pissed", quite interchangeably. They mean the same thing: really, really angry.

And it is DEFINITELY swearing.

StillHungryy · 23/04/2017 00:28

It is

StillHungryy · 23/04/2017 00:29

I thought crap was bad but i keep hearing it in sitcoms or tv before 8-9

StillHungryy · 23/04/2017 00:31

But I wouldn't say motherfucker was on par with Cunt, nor Bloody or dick I'm uncertain where I stand on sodding

LonginesPrime · 23/04/2017 00:33

OP, please don't be under the impression that civilised people go around saying 'gash' - it's mainly a teenage boy/manchild thing, which I suspect they felt was needed when 'cunt' became too mainstream and lost its shock value!

StillHungryy · 23/04/2017 00:34

Gash to me isn't a swear word for one you can have a gash on your leg or out of your arm! It can be used to be vulgar but not swearing

StillHungryy · 23/04/2017 00:39

For me:

Level 1:
cunt

Level 2:
Shit
Bollocks
Fucking/motherfucking
Arsehole
Pissed /pissing

Level:3
Bastard
Arse
Bitch

Not a swear word : dick, bloody, Jesus, Jesus Christ, gash, siding,
Prick (although probably level 3)

LonginesPrime · 23/04/2017 00:39

Yes, but it's saying the vulva/fanny slit/whatever you want to call it looks like a big knife wound. So it's derogatory to women and is used as a criticism in a misogynistic way, as is cunt.

LonginesPrime · 23/04/2017 00:40

Obviously, if you're using it properly, for example you fall off your bike and have a gash on your knee, that's not swearing.

notangelinajolie · 23/04/2017 00:46

I must have lead a very sheltered life because I have never ever heard of gash and have no idea what it means. Not going to google it incase it's very bad and does things to my computer..

gettinfedduppathis · 23/04/2017 00:50

how is sodding a swear word?! It is derived from the act of sodomy.

Willyoujustbequiet · 23/04/2017 00:50

Nope. Its not.

And I'm a bit of a prude language wise.

Cantseethewoods · 23/04/2017 00:51

Interestingly I think of 'pissed off' as low level swearing but 'pissed' as in drunk as fine- using 'bum holed' in the same context is worse.
