...to a thread in praise of my teaching colleagues the tide will turn and someone will say teachers are arse holes.

So. Teaching colleagues, we do a fantastic job, under increasingly difficult circumstances because of the Torres. I salute you.

Oh god here we go. 'So do lots of professions' 'but you get 13 weeks holiday' and other such irrelevant posts about jobs that aren't teaching. Ergo not what this thread is about.
And no I'm not a teacher. I'm a far more hated professional Grin

NoYouDontKnowItAll · 22/04/2017 23:42

Thank heavens, not a bumsex thread.

Nope, but the OP did mention arse holes in the first sentence. They had to get it in somewhere

ScarlettFreestone · 22/04/2017 23:48

I think my children's teachers are very good and are underpaid for the work they do.

I feel deeply sorry for them having to deal with some parents (especially after reading some MN threads!) I try very, very hard not to be unnecessarily annoying.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/04/2017 01:54

They had to get it in somewhere

Steady on.

Grilledaubergines · 23/04/2017 01:59

Lots of teachers are wonderful. Lots of teachers are on the wrong profession and it shows.

Sorry, no pedestal from me.

XsaraHale · 23/04/2017 02:34

Having to be 'on' the entire time?

24hr on call
Miss bedtimes, Christmas, Birthdays...a lot more

Yes, my choice being a Funeral Director.

A lot of people say " I can't do what you do..." Well, I could never teach, hat 🎩 off to you guys!

StillHungryy · 23/04/2017 02:48

I think on the whole teachers are great, I had some issues with my 6th form teachers, but remembering what my classes were like and my classmates, they had the patience of saints

BreatheDeep · 23/04/2017 02:52

I appreciate teachers. My mum was one and I vowed to never become one. Tories are destroying every service though. You're nothing special in that respect Grin

user1492232552 · 23/04/2017 02:53

There are arseholes in every walk of life and profession, as mumsnet proves on a frighteningly regular basis.

Brokenbiscuit · 23/04/2017 02:59

DD's primary school teachers were fabulous without exception. They worked incredibly hard and their dedication was impressive.

At secondary, most of her teachers are great too. Several are brilliant. I think the vast majority work really hard. However, there are a couple who are lazy and clearly don't give a shit. The rest of the profession should not get the blame for these individuals.

Teaching is bloody difficult. I am sure that most teachers work really long hours and they must be fed up of constantly having to respond to the latest government fads, dealing with shitty parents etc. I've no doubt that it's stressful. I believe that teachers generally deserve more respect for what they do, and they deserve to be much better paid. However, it does irritate me a bit when teachers say that teaching is uniquely difficult/the hardest job in the world. It really isn't.

Lots of other professions work incredibly hard in stressful circumstances too. Acknowledging that doesn't in any way diminish the value of the work that teachers do. It isn't a competition in any case.

A big thank you to all of you for all that you do!Flowers

Dumbo412 · 23/04/2017 03:09

There are good and bad in every profession.

To those of you who take a pride in shaping young peoples minds, and helping them to reach their potential, thank you.

It's taken us a change of school to finally find teachers who are genuinely interested in my daughters wellbeing. Her confidence has soared, and a subject that she hated has become very important to her, she happily goes into school each day, and comes home with lots of stories and anecdotes from her teacher. The change has been phenomenal,

Teachers definitely have my respect, if they can inspire a child the way that my daughters teacher has. I don't usually get all gushy, but some teachers are amazing.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/04/2017 03:15
on teachers. He LOVES teachers.
deliverdaniel · 23/04/2017 03:30

Teaching sounds incredibly hard and as though it is getting harder all the time. It is without a doubt undervalued and underpaid and the conditions of the job are changing all the time. I am incredibly grateful to teachers for all they do.

But still- it doesn't help anyone not to acknowledge that there are lots of crap teachers and lots of mediocre ones as well as good and great ones. My DS had a terrible teacher last year and it was really damaging. Saying this does not mean that I don't support the teaching profession more generally. Luckily he's got a really good one this year,, and it's made such an incredible difference.

Devorak · 23/04/2017 05:41

Why the goady post about politics? Shouldn't you be doing some marking?

Ifailed · 23/04/2017 06:03

Why the goady post about politics?

Because the vast majority of teachers are effectively employed by the Government, who also set framework in which they operate. As most politicians have an enormously inflated opinion of their own abilities they can't help meddling in how teaching is delivered, usually to the detriment of education.

Creampastry · 23/04/2017 06:24

Hardest job in the world .... no

Have to be "on" all the time .... no

Some teachers are fantastic, some can't spell and just print the curriculum and have 13 weeks holiday. But it's not the hardest job in the world by a long shot. It's become too bureaucratic and TAs often aren't valued enough.

It's like with any job - there are good one who go above and beyond, there are some who do the bare minimum.

Devorak · 23/04/2017 06:25

Ah.

That would explain the opinion (perhaps) but not the goadiness and PA strickethrough.

GinIsIn · 23/04/2017 06:27

Teachers are great.

I'm going to criticise though - arseholes is one word..... Grin

Trifleorbust · 23/04/2017 06:45

I'm a teacher. I am definitely an arsehole. I work hard though.

Trifleorbust · 23/04/2017 06:48

And I just want to put it out there: I get 13 weeks holiday. I love it. But I don't get paid for it, so if I want to sit on my bum and eat galaxy caramel all day and do my planning on 2nd September, I will.

fuckoffdailysnail · 23/04/2017 06:51

I'd say nurses, doctors, firefighters and the police have to be 'on' all the time as well.
Yes teachers do a fab job and need more support from parents regarding children's behaviour

user1492287253 · 23/04/2017 06:56

Yeah but teaching is fairly uniquely a job that everyone has encountered. I spent 11 years at school and 38 weeks a year looking at a teacher. Some were inspiring some were shocking. My now adult dds had the same. My little dd so far only has had good ones.
I taught breifly and concluded there are easier ways of getting the cash in!

SmileEachDay · 23/04/2017 07:34

Fenella I know! And yet my phone will not accept that fact. passively aggressively blames phone

Devorak I don't think I was remotely goady. The strike through is there to lighten it. But you are, of course, entitled to read it as you wish. I'm very angry about what the Tory govt have done, how some of their decisions are directly affecting those children who find school the hardest - if that's goady, so be it.

OP posts:
ItsOut · 23/04/2017 10:16

Meh, some teachers are great, some are lazy arseholes, some are perfectly ok, some are not very intelligent, some are incredibly knowledgeable, Some are moaning all the time, some seem to love their jobs, some are creative, some are really dull, some are truly exceptional

My kids have had them all. Grin

Willyoujustbequiet · 23/04/2017 10:50

Some teachers are wonderful and some are useless. Some work extremely hard whilst some dont.

Just like any other profession.

Its a very demanding job but so are plenty of others and no its not the hardest job out there
