Gina Miller anti-Brexit campaign raises £250k so far

Maybe I am being a bit unreasonable (I expect lots of MN 'biscuits' to come my way on this thread Wink), but just wanted to put this here anyway.

Gina Miller, who started the court case against the British government over Brexit, has started an online Go Fund Me campaign to support MPs who oppose hard Brexit.

It has been fairly well publicised (I'm sorry if there already another thread on this! Blush), but she's raised £250,000 so far (as of 22nd April) and I just wanted to link to it here in case you'd be interested in finding out more.

Thank you everyone :)

Of course, it's astonishing that we live is a so-called civilized nation where the Leave campaign has admitted it only won because so many people bought their lies,

Could you post a link to this, or is it just an "alt fact"

BillSykesDog · 22/04/2017 16:24

I don't think she actually does any good at all for the cause she espouses. People who are already very pro-Brexit midge like her. However mainly I think she reinforces the view that the EU is good for a wealthy globalist elite in particular and the wealthier members of society in general.

If her aim is to encourage more people to a pro-EU position I think her aim is counter productive.

You're pulling my leg, right? Grin

As I'm sure you know, Dominic Cummings (Campaign Director for Leave campaign) wrote about it in the Spectator and his response has been widely distributed since. I'd recommend reading the entire article: blogs.spectator.co.uk/2017/01/dominic-cummings-brexit-referendum-won/ The key extract I was referring to was this one:

"Pundits and MPs kept saying ‘why isn’t Leave arguing about the economy and living standards’. They did not realise that for millions of people, £350m/NHS was about the economy and living standards – that’s why it was so effective. It was clearly the most effective argument not only with the crucial swing fifth but with almost every demographic. Even with UKIP voters it was level-pegging with immigration. Would we have won without immigration? No. Would we have won without £350m/NHS? All our research and the close result strongly suggests No. Would we have won by spending our time talking about trade and the Single Market? No way (see below)."

A fact which ties in with the results of the Ipsos Mori poll held one week prior to the referendum, revealing that 47% of voters actually believed the 350M/NHS bus lie, more info from the actual research but also widely reported e.g. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/nearly-half-of-britons-believe-vote-leaves-false-350-million-a-week-to-the-eu-claim-a7085016.html

Extract: Nearly half of the British public believe Vote Leave’s claim that the UK pays £350 million a week to the European Union despite the figure being debunked, a poll shows. Ipsos MORI found that 47 per cent of the public believe that the claim, which has been repeatedly criticised by the UK Statistics Authority, is true. Just 39 per cent realise the figure, which has formed the centerpiece of the Leave campaign, is false, while 14 per cent do not know.

Direct democracy at it's finest Wink

specialsubject · 22/04/2017 16:57

No. Nearly half of the 3500 odd surveyed ( pic is blurred) believe it. Now prove scientifically how that extrapolates to the full adult population.

Amuses me that there is so much blubbing about the essential
Tax rises needed, but put it on beg.com and out comes the cash. Perhaps we should just crowdfund the country? The sites only charge 6%.

RebelAllianceUK · 22/04/2017 17:28

Voting population size say 45,000,000 requires smaller sample size than this for 99% confidence level with

LadyPW · 22/04/2017 17:36

Have I missed something? We have a vote each, and it's free. Vote for whoever you want. Why waste money on a campaign orchestrated by someone with enough money to fund it herself that won't do anything different to you voting for whoever you want?
We're leaving the EU. End of. Process started.

Buttercupsandaisies · 22/04/2017 17:36

I think she's making people go against remain and more likely to vote Tory

I know a lot of remain voters who are remain but not that passionate whereby they think randoms can start challenging the voting public choices.

I don't know anyone who likes what's she's doing

Cunt? Really? Maybe you'd feel more at home on one of those sites where misogynistic nutjobs froth at any woman who dares to voice an opinion. This is a pro-women site.

BoboChic · 22/04/2017 18:18

I think Gina Miller is doing more harm than good with this campaign. I agreed with her previous action, but not with this.

YokoReturns · 22/04/2017 18:20

What irks me about Brexiters is that they get cross about Miller's pro-Remain fundraising, but they're perfectly happy for Arron Banks to bankroll the ridiculous bunch of lies that was the Leave.EU campaign, or the official Vote Leave campaign, which was also BS, and whose funding is also suspected to be illegal.

What Gina Miller is doing is totally above board and might be our only chance to stop the madness.

^^This. I completely agree, Yoko. I do think there are double standards.

If, for example, the Remain side had been successful and won the referendum, the Leave voters would have wanted another referendum to take place. Which I fully accept and can understand, as it's democracy and we're a democratic country. Yet now, many Remain voters are unhappy with the referendum result and they would like their voices heard, and they're being insulted and belittled by others. Of course, not everyone will agree with the viewpoint of Remain voters, but criticising and abusing them for their views is never acceptable.

OP
I can't see what they are doing with the money
Neither can you you say?
I'm confused.

lalalonglegs · 22/04/2017 20:07

I don't understand what is confusing people about the Best for Britain campaign. From the gofundme page

How will we spend the money?
We will use the money to back candidates who pledge to support a full and free vote on the Brexit deal. We will also work with organisations with the same goals. The money raised will not pay staff salaries.

What will we do?
We will:

  • Support parliamentary candidates who commit to keeping the options open for the British people.
  • Fight to make the Brexit deal process transparent, honest and democratic.
  • Tour marginal seats to make sure the next Government has no mandate to destroy our rights and our relationship with Europe.

I love Gina Miller. I wish she were standing for parliament.

BoneyBackJefferson · 22/04/2017 20:19

lalalonglegs

Yes, she is just what we need in parliament. Another rich person that will stop at nothing to get what they want.

Goldfishjane · 22/04/2017 20:21

Those candidates will have their campaign funds
But more importantly - how many of them will there be?
I fully appreciate there is a lot wrong here and I think her original action was correct. But this doesn't seem to cohere into a legitimate anti Brexit movement and even if it did....people voted for Brexit.
We could have another ref but I don't know what we'd do if we got a marginal result again.

Goldfishjane · 22/04/2017 20:23

Oh Boney I just saw your post as I hadn't refreshed the page
Yes I feel that about her too. It seems like that's what politics is now. And I hate for a GE to be fought on this.

Caprianna · 22/04/2017 20:30

Great. I will be donating.

lalalonglegs · 22/04/2017 20:31

Yes, you can characterise Gina Miller merely as a "rich person that will stop at nothing" Hmm or you could describe her as someone who is prepared to stand up for what she believes (despite vicious baiting in the media and threats of violence and rape). She is determined, principled, a feminist, courageous and unapologetic. She is just the sort of person that I would want for my MP. Oh, and before Brexit, she set up a foundation to campaign for greater transparency in the financial sector and increased philanthropy to help to address the inequality gap. So, not exactly a slouch, is she?

BoneyBackJefferson · 22/04/2017 20:49

Yes, you can characterise Gina Miller merely as a "rich person that will stop at nothing"

Thanks, But I don't need your permission. Wink

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 22/04/2017 20:56

BoneyBack The Daily Mail have nicknamed her 'millionaire financier' husband 'Mr Hedge Fund', so Gina Miller happens to be married to a very rich man. What does her wealth have to do with starting a campaign on Go Fund Me?
