SPike rods on fence to stop cats coming in?

My garden is lovely, my daughter will love it this summer, but unfortunately the neighbours cat keeps coming and shitting all over my grass. I bought repelant and used it for a week, i thought it worked but then a massive shit in the middle of the lawn followed by a load of sloppy shit by the fence. I only have a small grass area and I'm getting really fucked off with the grass being shat on. It makes me feel like the lawn stinks and full of germs if my daughter wants to crawl around on it or if we sit on it. I feel like I'll need to disinfect it if I want to go out there with her.

I've seen the cat that does it, I've chucked water at it, chased it away etc but it still comes back!!

I'm tempted to go to Homebase today and get some of these spiked rods that I've seen. Is this legal to do?

BoneyBackJefferson, yes he knows perfectly well it's my fence. They object to everything. These are young people. However, he has a hobby that intrudes into my home all night every night, yet I have made adjustments in my home to deal with it. I don't expect him to deface my property without have the decency to discuss it with me first.

My annoyance is not the spikes per se, although my cat has a genetic defect which has given him webbed feet so he IS potentially at risk of injury from them, it's the lack of any communication and damaging my property that I object to.

kali110 · 23/04/2017 21:46

TheFormidableMrsC sure you're entitled to ask him remove them at his expense.
boney erm because it's her fence and she has a cat?Hmm
I wouldn't put up with that either,!

gillybeanz · 23/04/2017 21:50

This is illegal and you can get done for it, so we were told by neighbours many moons ago. It wasn't us and neighbours btw, but others we both knew.
Obviously, it's cruelty to animals or burglars, whichever you are trying to keep out of your garden.

user0000000001 · 23/04/2017 22:38

If my cat injured itself you spike in your garden I would take you to the small claims court for costs.

How would you prove your cat had injured yourself on my 'spikes'?

I own 6 cats and have these around my garden fence to keep my cats in my garden.

You sound like a crazy fucking cat woman. And not in a good way.

chocolatesavedmysanity · 23/04/2017 23:17

Yanbu
I fucking hate fucking cats and everything about them. They are fucking vile!
There are about 8 in my street and they all fucking shit in my garden, on my drive etc.
They come into my house uninvited too. Fucking assholes!
One of my other neighbours got some lion shit from the zoo and put it on her front lawn... it kept them away. But then she had lion shit instead of cat shit on her grass!!

Iamastonished · 23/04/2017 23:29

You are so angry chocolate Grin

chocolatesavedmysanity · 23/04/2017 23:38

lol I'm actually not... I'm really quite chilled for a Sunday night. I just really hate cats. They irk me 😳

Crowdblundering · 23/04/2017 23:40

Spray lavender Zoflora all over the garden. Cats hate it (cat owner who sprays places I don't want my cat to piss or shit).

user1489179512 · 24/04/2017 00:05

How can anyone hate a cat? It is simply not normal.

chocolatesavedmysanity · 24/04/2017 00:48

We had one when I was a kid and let's just say things didn't work out. It used to come into my room and piss everywhere.. snarled at me, scrabbled me all the time. I was only 7 and didn't actively dislike it but he clearly hated me so the feeling became mutual. Nothing happened to damage our relationship.. he loved the rest of the family but fucking hated me.
Then when I was a teen a bf of mine.. his mum had 3 Persian cats. They freaked me right out. They could sense my fear and played on it. They were little bastards.
Cats and I have never been friends

chocolatesavedmysanity · 24/04/2017 00:49

Scrabbed not scrabbled

Crowdblundering · 24/04/2017 00:50

I am wary of people who don't get on with cats.

chocolatesavedmysanity · 24/04/2017 00:54

I'm generally not good with animals.. I like dogs and goldfish. Maybe rabbits but that's as far as it goes. I won't be mean to them or anything, my daughter loves them so if we are out walking and meet one I will facilitate her stroking them etc but they just give me the heebie jeebies... they seem so sneaky. Couldn't trust one lol!

Leontine · 24/04/2017 01:06

Persistence it's the key! Get a water pistol or spray bottle and spray them every time you see them in your garden.

I'm pretty repulsed by the spike deterrent though. I have had many cats over the years and would be appalled if one of my neighbours had them installed to keep animals out of their garden.
I'd be more than happy to pick up my cat's shit from someone else's garden but please don't hurt them!

To be honest, anyone who hates any kind of animal I find really weird. Just like people who hate babies and children.

FrostyPopThePenguinLord · 24/04/2017 01:34

We had this issue when we moved house, tried repellant and the homemade stuff as well (no use saying anything about fencing we rented so didn't think it was an option), my husband even 'marked his territory' around the garden at night...nothing worked....in the end... we got a dog, no more cats....they don't know he was raised by two house cats and only wants to play when the see a whippet running full pelt at them!! (He would never hurt them he just adores cats and wants to cuddle with them he just moves a bit quickly sometimes!!)
My dad despises cats for this reason and his solution when we were younger was to get a cat of our own, she claimed the garden as her territory and wouldn't allow other cats in it and if she used it as a bathroom it was very discreetly in a flower bed or well hidden. I don't know if that's just us being lucky with our cat.
Hose with a sprinkler attachment for range might work as well or a motion activated sprinkler system if you are deadly serious, if it's a small garden even better

Good luck

Shewhomustgowithoutname · 24/04/2017 01:36

I really do not understand why animal lovers can not see that people do not wish their gardens to be messed up by cats, dogs, or foxes.

esk1mo · 24/04/2017 01:59

i really dont understand why humans feel the need to turn to cruelty to stop an animals natural behaviour.

chocolate you are just vile.

Leontine · 24/04/2017 02:06

Of course I can understand why people don't want shit in their garden, but in terms of foxes, badgers etc. do you really expect to be able to do anything, or indeed think it's reasonable to expect to be able to do anything about wild animals messing up your garden? Shock

kali110 · 24/04/2017 02:20

How is chocolatesavedmysanity vile?
She hasn't done anything to them, ( i'm assuming Hmm) she just doesn't like them.
It is allowed! This is coming from a cat owner!

Iamastonished · 24/04/2017 06:25

I prefer cats to most children Grin

RedBugMug · 24/04/2017 06:37

Get a water pistol or spray bottle and spray them every time you see them in your garden.

that only works if a) you actually get the cat and b) you are there a lot of the time to actually aim.

tbh if you don't want your pet to get hurt, keep it in your own house and garden and deal with you own pets shit

IHaveAToiletBrush · 24/04/2017 06:47

Haven't read the whole thread so sorry if this has been mentioned already. You need a cat and fox alarm they are life changing! I purchased ours for £20 in Wilkinson and have had not cars in the garden since. It lets off a really loud sonic noise that can only be heard buy animals when the batteries need replacing it beeps just like a smoke alarm. I can honestly say it is the best £20 I have ever spent. When we first got it the cats would come up onto the fence to jump into the garden kind of shake their heads a bit and run off now they don't even come on to the fence.

BoneyBackJefferson · 24/04/2017 06:54

kali110

The thing is that as has been proved by this and the many other threads of its type, that cat owners take little responsibility for what there pets do and don't like it when others take steps to prevent the cats from damaging and defecating in their gardens.

RedBugMug · 24/04/2017 07:33

the spikes the op is talking about are not the 'impale a cat' type but a 'outchy my paws' type. not cat would get seriously hurt, just deterred.

WantingBaby1 · 24/04/2017 08:48

Not sure if it's legal or not, but I wouldn't bother if i were you - our neighbours have these and I frequently see cats jump up and sit on top of them! Haven't worked at all.

I love cats and have a lovely indoor female (indoor = her choice, we have a flap but she prefers the comfort of home...precious thing) but it's flippin' annoying when the other neighbourhood cats poop in my lavender plants!
