Help!

for the last week they have been flying around our bedroom at night (3-5 each night, when the light is on) I googled it and read that clothes moths don't like light so it wouldn't be clothes moths. A few days later clearing stuff in the spare bedroom and moved a rolled up carpet - lots of moths, agh Shock

I've been googling and can't work out what to do, go big guns with chemicals (bad for health etc?) or go natural (not effective, just repels, won't kill larvae?)

There are hundreds of options and I'm stumped, no sign of damage to any clothes yet but I want to nip it in the bud, I checked google images and they look like clothes moths......

I know as soon as I switch the light on they will start and I'm already paranoid and considering washing everything I own.... I suffer with anxiety and I know it's stupid but I've been crying about it

Any advice on what actually works? What should I do?

Get a pest exterminator in. They do clothes moths. Google one locally. I got one in for £90. Got rid of them for good. Expensive, yes. But I'd spent so much money over the years buying various sticky traps and nonsense and it never got rid of them. Plus I'd lost a couple of favourite cardies to the buggers. Wasn't gonna risk anymore!

I've got our moth problem under control by hoovering,by picking up and getting rid of ( flushing down the loo...) any cocoons I find,by looking regularly in the corners and edges where I know cocoons are likely to be,and getting rid of them.
I couldn't face the chemical solution!
It's worked though - there was a time my DC had standing orders to kill any moth on sight and our evenings were punctuated by people leaping up and down chasing after moths...Grin
Just the odd one now, easily got rid of.
They were never in our clothes though, just in the carpets. And in my old teddy bear Sad

I got rid of mine eventually. By moving. Twice.

I cried when we had a full-on infestation, they ruined thousands of pounds worth of clothes and rugs. I tried everything, I know the original source of the infestation was a Victorian sofa I bought to refurbish.

Until I met a clothes moth I would never squash an insect. I used to take pleasure with those fuckers.

Twats.

The pheromone traps are good, it is important to keep any cashmere, silk or wool clean, because they will feed on debris or human skin on clothes, so never put any woolens back in a drawer without washing them.

Vacuum, sweep and dust regularly, in all corners, cupboards and drawers, they hate disturbance.

I had professionals in but it wasn't successful, I think because I was living in a large, old and sprawling house, too many places for them to hide.

Fingers crossed, I haven't seen one for over a year...

ILikeyourHairyHands · 22/04/2017 00:35

I did have smudges all over my bedroom wall from squishing them though, I used to leap up in bed shouting 'DIE FUCKER'.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 22/04/2017 00:35

It was a dark time.

Yes they can be very, very stressful. We lived in an old semi detached house with very dirty neighbours. I think the moths might have come through from next door as I never found anything actually eaten by them but they were everywhere. Reduced me to tears frequently, I couldn't sit in bed reading without one fluttering in my face. When we moved I was convinced they'd come with us but it's been 5 years now and no sign of them. Touch wood.

AnotherDayHasGone · 22/04/2017 11:09

Getting the professionals in had an added benefit. Not only did they kill all the moths I also never saw any flies or spiders in the house for months due to the insecticide they sprayed on the walls and back of the furniture Grin

Thank you all for your replies, I feel much better about being so anxious (and a bit less like I'm over reacting, because DH is totally oblivious to them!)

I have got the spray, some wardrobe hangers and moth balls (all zero) so I will bite the bullet and get the carpet out and hope they are mostly in that and give everything a good vacuum and spray, see how it goes and then get someone in if they are still a problem.

I have never had moths before and I thought spiders were bad for my nerves, turns out moths are high on my list! Although the thought of some of you swatting them and ILikeyourHairyHands cries of DIE F*ckers has made me smile Smile

My life was completely taken over by it and to make matters worse, my dh would waft into rooms with them literally flying in his face and insist he couldn't see the problem

Same here. Angry

We managed to get ours down but have notived them again.

They love dark places that are not disturbed so - open windows - curtains, wardrobes and air rooms lots of light.

We took every item of clotheing outside - and went through each piece to look and YES THE BASTARDS ATE MY CASHMERE JUMPERS....thats heaven to them.

Hoover thoroughly - lots of anti deterrent hanging sprays - pheromone traps, keep moving clothing, keep hovering keep disturbing them....

Yes its a long game.

badgercat · 22/04/2017 14:04

We had them for well over 10 years - tried all sorts and ended up having to just live with them. Then we ended up with new kittens and sprayed the house with Indorex flea spray and as a happy side effect got rid of the moths and several hundred silverfish too (They're rank little feckers aswell)

Find the nest. Mine was in our broken Hoover. Turned my stomach.

Clothes moths are cunts in my opinion, they favour expensive things like cashmere and other decent wools. I am fighting a losing battle with them and have given up crying at the loss of favourite clothes. Planning to join a nudist colony.
