I loved The Owl Service by Alan Garner...there were others but I've forgotten them all!

Anything by lois duncan

Loved Lois Duncan! My favourite was the one with the astral projection - where people start seeing the girl in places where she had never been...
Also Locked In Time where the step family is hiding a big secret and seem to have no concept of time.....brilliant book.

I loved Lois Duncan!
Then went on to Stephen King and James Herbert.

I've never read It. I've bought it to read but it's such a long book and I don't know if I'm up to the challenge yet. Maybe over the summer.

A modern one people might like that actually drove my 14 year old into my bed is Michelle Paver's Dark Matter.

I had a couple of Terry Deary audio books, True Horror Stories and other similar titles, that scared the hell out of me as a kid! One of them featured The Amityville Horror on it so as you can imagine, when I got a bit older and heard the story again, the fear just came rushing back Grin

Of course, all the Goosebumps and Point Horror books were a must!

Loved the point horror! Still think of them now late at night... 'the king dark' always sticks in my head shudders

Point books! There was a trilogy, I think it was The Fire, The Fog and... The Snow? Something. It was awesome though. Oh and Dream Lover. I read the whole thing when I pretended to be sick and stayed home one day.

Yes yes, the Fog trilogy!

The Point Horror books! I loved them, especially any by RL Stine. I also read and reread a horror comedy called, "The Undertaker's Gone Bananas"!

I read Plague 99 by Jean Ure (which may be the first in a trilogy/series?) as an early teen and it always stuck with me

A little later on it had to be Stephen King. The Stand was my favourite back then.

User Have you read The Mabinogian? It's where Garner got the story from initially. It's a book of Welsh Mythology and is fabulous, it explains why she wants to be flowers!
His other books are superb too.

Someone really needs to do a new TV series/film of Come Back Lucy. It was a chilling little book that still gave me the creeps when I read it again recently.

Stephen King was a favourite

There was an Armada book of ghost stories that I always got out of the library

There was one story about a medieval girl who had a pet monkey in her castle

Her cruel father killed the monkey so she threw herself from the top of the tower so they could be reunited

Always on the lookout in charity shops for that book

Doris Stokes too - also had entirely forgiven then Come Back Lucy which I loooved.
I had a teen obsession with Borley Rectory and was too scared to sleep fairly often.
The Unexplained magazine.
Always loved a good woo read in those days

The Haunting of Cassie Palmer by Vivien Alcock freaked me out.

I also used to like the Readers Digest books of true horror stories. One featured a photo of the aftermath of spontaneous combustion - a pair of old lady's legs, still wearing fluffy slippers Shock

Charlotte Sometimes was quite weird, too.

I was coming on here to say I loved "The Eyes of Karen Connors" but didn't know who wrote it. Turns out it was that Lois Duncan you're all talking about. Spooky.....

I also loved Point Horror and read most of them but in the end I started to find them really predictable (usually the best friend or boyfriend being the culprit).Still loved them though!

Also loved Pet Sematary (Stephen King) and Flowers in the Attic.

I used to love the 'Choose your own Adventure' books as a teenager and there were some quite spooky, creepy ones, like The Mystery of Chimney Rock and The Horror at High Ridge etc. Classic!!
