3 year old always has chewing gum

Not my child, we see them regularly and they're always chewing gum. Often with their own packet in their pocket. Am I being unreasonable or this horrible?

Mine never have it within sight of me, because I'm worried they'll choke - and they are rather older than 3.

Isn't it meant to be good for teeth? Or maybe I have that the wrong way round, is it bad for teeth?

Mine don't have it at 11 and 6, but that's mostly because I don't have it either. Odd at 3 but not the worst thing imaginable.

Urgh, I hate chewing gum. I hate the smell, it makes people chew like camels, and the noise....oh, the noise.

Added to that the choking hazard for a toddler and no, YANBU. Gross.

Horrible because it's so inappropriate for a young child.

When I catch my students chewing gum I always tell them it makes even a intelligent person look bovine.

apparently in Finland they did an experiment with nursery age children and gave them a piece of gum to chew after lunch. Their tooth health and cleanliness improved significantly. The right sort of gum is very effective .

I wouldn't and didn't give mine chewing gum at that age.

Chewing is good for a child with sensory issues, and gum is ideal!

I had conniptions if my baby swiped a big bit of banana. I'd have fainted clean away if I'd found them with gum.

that is interesting viques my seven yr old is severley autistic and i struggle to clean his teeth he does however love chewing gum would you happen to know what type of gum they used in the experiment?.

x2boys I think the brand is not the thing, but if you google the gums were sugar free and all contained something called xylitol which is fairly easy to find as an ingredient in UK gum.

My 5 and 6 year old eat huba buba chewing gum, they spit it out when the flavour goes away.

It's possible it could be sensory related as a better alternative to chewing on clothes, hair, furniture etc. It wouldn't bother me as long as it was disposed of appropriately.

Any chewing gum helps after eating, pref sugar free. It encourages saliva to be produced. Dentists have been saying this for years.
