To ask you about a hotel

Our first wedding anniversary is coming up in June and we're looking at going away for a night.
We're torn between 2 hotels.. One is in the lakes and really expensive but looks beautiful although the room & bathroom are quite small and there is only a single bath.
The other is in Chester (which we have been saying we want to go to for a while) but a cheaper hotel. It has 4 stars on trip advisor and although looks a little more basic than the other the suite im looking at is massive and has a big double jacuzzi bath.
They both have good reviews although some for the second hotel say it's a little dated but clean & comfortable..
We want it to be special but at the same time we're not loaded and the week before we're going away with the DCs for a week...
I know I know this is a first world problem but I'm torn and need help...

I can't recommend a hotel but The Chimneys pub in Chester does fabulous food.

moonchild77 · 20/04/2017 10:09

I had my wedding reception there many years ago and stayed one night. I've been for meals there. It's nice enough.

Mrsglitterfairy · 20/04/2017 10:33

Would you recommend it moon?

Have you looked at The Grosvenor in Chester itself. Proper swanky, starts at £180 per night.

Mrsglitterfairy · 20/04/2017 12:52

The grosvenor looks lovely but a bit too swanky if that makes sense. And for what we want (big room with a spa etc) it's a bit too pricy.

OP posts:
moonchild77 · 20/04/2017 13:32

Ermmmm, I don't think I would recommend it to be honest.
It's not very fancy and it's in a very small village with nothing about! Mold is only 5 or so minutes away in the car but it's not a very special place.
The Beaufort has lots of coaches in all the time but mostly pensioners.
I won't comment on the room as I've only stayed in the bridal suite and that was donkeys years ago.
I'd say the Lake District is way more appealing than here.

If you wanted a hotel in Chester as others have said, the grosvenor is swanky. I haven't stayed there as I live in this area.
Chester is a beautiful city which I love going to. Big open space park by the river, lots of nice restaurants. If you want to come to Chester then I'd say stay in Chester itself.
Hope this helps. Sorry if I've put you off! Would hate you to be disappointed.

PeaFaceMcgee · 20/04/2017 13:33

Of course that bathroom has a door, you sillies!

MaidenMotherCrone · 20/04/2017 13:34

Carden Park? Close to Chester, roomy suites.

2014newme · 20/04/2017 13:35

Oh dear is there no better option? These are like the crossroads motel!
Avoid jacuzzi baths unless you know they have been serviced and properly cleaned.

MrsELM21 · 20/04/2017 13:39

I met DH working in a hotel in Chester, that hotel looks like it might not actually be right in Chester. It's such a lovely place but I'd definitely try to stay centrally if you can

Mumteedum · 20/04/2017 18:32

Pea... I did doubt myself after I posted Blush though I have heard of new fangled trends for open plan bathrooms.

Mrsglitterfairy · 20/04/2017 20:38

Thanks for the honest review moon I'll keep looking. I'm thinking something more in the centre of Chester. Just finding something that I we like and is in our price range.
My dad has said that if we really want to go somewhere a bit more expensive, he'll pay for it and we can pay him back bless him

Mrsglitterfairy · 20/04/2017 20:39

Thanks everyone else, although I still can't see that there's a door peeface

OP posts:
PeaFaceMcgee · 20/04/2017 21:34

You can see the door opens inwards and is hinged on the left, as you're standing in the bedroom.

selly24 · 20/04/2017 22:03

I think the first hotel has a pocket door ie a door that slides into the wall. I also think the lighting is optional ie it can be a normal colour. I prefer the first, just because the decor looks a bit more stylish and contemporary - and the shape of the bath us the second .gives no room to relax / stretch out.

iknowimcoming · 20/04/2017 22:11

I'd also recommend the Chester grosvenor, smack in the middle of where you want to be and really special, I've been twice and would love to go back. I'd also forgo the jacuzzi bath for it, but that's just me - I like to bathe alone Grin

Brighteyes27 · 20/04/2017 22:12

A family member recommended Abode in Chester to us. It's supposed to have very nice food.
You can usually get very good deals (so a more upmarket hotel) on a Friday or a Sunday night.
Lots of lovely hotels in the Lakes like Leeming House which is lovely with views to die for and overlooking Ullswater.
Or how about venturing into Scotland if your considering the lakes Edinburgh is lovely and lots of nice hotels.

NotPennysBoat · 20/04/2017 22:14

Go to the Lakes, it's just sooo beautiful and romantic up there. For the amount of time you'd spend in the bath, is it worth basing your decision on that?

cRiNKlyCoCkapoo · 20/04/2017 22:16

Travelzoo has really good deals for hotels if you just want a night or two.

Jins · 20/04/2017 22:17

I agree with moonchild. If you want Chester then that's not Chester. It's not as nice a hotel as the pictures make out. If you do stay there then eat out...

PossibiliTea · 20/04/2017 22:18

The doubletree in Chester is lovely and the spa is gorgeous there's a really nice pool with a waterfall. The room was so nice and they are really helpful if you tell them it's for a special occasion.

Jins · 20/04/2017 22:20

This is worth a look

Mrsglitterfairy · 20/04/2017 22:44

Thanks all.
I'll check out that site, we only want one night and it's a Sunday so should hopefully get a good deal.
I know what you mean about the bath, in theory it seems like a big deal but it probably won't be when we're actually there.
I am thinking either the centre of Chester or the lakes.

Don't choose a mediocre hotel for pensioners and businessmen just so you can have a naff jacuzzi baths full of germs. There was a Jacuzzi bath when we bought our house (boak) first thing I did was rip it out. They are never properly maintained and the illnesses you can get from them aren't very fun!

Catsize · 21/04/2017 08:03

A good friend of mine owns 80 Watergate St in Chester.

Technically a B&B but it's amazing and has consu=intent 5 star reviews.

80 Watergate St

tripadvisor

She has 93 review - all 5 star.

At least one room has a huge copper bath, and there is parking at the back.

Right in the centre, lots of restaurants nearby.

I know the Mold one and think you might be disappointed.

Agree that Abode is also a good location.

There is a Crowne Plaza too.

However, I don't think you'd regret 80 Watergate St - the owner is lovely and goes to such trouble for her guests - and bakes daily! Smile
