dh and dd1 went out yesterday to buy a new hamster for dd1. Now, I always really liked her hamster so was happy for her to get a new one. Was I didn't bank on though was dd1 arriving with her new hamster and dh trailing behind with a hamster just for me 'as I'd liked the previous one so much'. Poor dh - I think he could tell my smile was forced and he was a bit sad about it - he said he'd never felt so sure of a positive reaction only to be so wrong .
Thing is, dd1's hamster is mine in all but name - I do all the cleaning, watering and a fair bit of entertaining. I nursed the last one through what turned out to be a terminal illness, syringe-feeding it Ribena and antibiotics two-hourly for 5 days.
I now have that x 2. Not forgetting of course the purchasing of overpriced Rotastak accessories this one needs. Hamsters can't be kept together so it's not of any benefit to have two. I'm quite hacked off really.
My friend mentioned that she will be getting a hamster - should I offer her mine? Even though poor dh thought it would be such a lovely and appreciated present?

Will you dd be upset? Surely 2 won't be much more effort than one?

oh what a pita - I'm sorry to say I did giggle at your story

Two hamsters WOULD be a pain - as geekgrrl said, they don't like to share so thats 2 cages to clean, 2 to feed and water etc etc. Would your DH be VERY upset if you gave it away? If he would, then keep it but if you think he'd be ok about it, give it away

as MamaG said, two hamsters are indeed exactly twice the effort (in all fairness though, hamsters are pretty low-maintenance).
I think dh would be hurt - not sure how much. Also, he spent a fair whack on a new cage for this one - can't really ask my friend to cough up for that IYKWIM.
Aaargh - what a nugget!

Aw you're stuck with them

As a teenager I begged for a hamster, ended up with a gerbil (my choice)

I was then told gerbils are very social animals so went back to pet shop for another - put it in with Lenny and they fought like wild things - my Dad had to rush to pet shop for another cage (said gerbil being "damaged" by this point)

So I ended up with 2 cages.....some time later, second gerbil had babies - it all escalated and at one point we had FIVE cages, various rodents adn a hamster named "killer" after she gave birth to and then ate 6 babies

I used to clean them out with the hoover nozzle as well (poor little sods!)

Can it not be DH’s hamster? Can he not do the work with them both?
