To think these two names aren't that alike

Alicia and Alia? I would say these are completely different and don't see how people are getting them mixed up.

They're not exactly the same. But they are similar.

Purplepeonies · 19/04/2017 19:46

They are quite similar tbh

Doilooklikeatourist · 19/04/2017 19:47

Very similar

TheNaze73 · 19/04/2017 19:47

Very similar

Soubriquet · 19/04/2017 19:48

I would say they are like enough to not be used for sisters but not like enough to be muddled up

A-leesh-ah
A-lee-ah

With the a for Apple sound

Crunchymum · 19/04/2017 19:48

Second one looks like someone forgot a few letters from the first one. Hmm

Weownthenight · 19/04/2017 19:48

Said al lee yah

HallowedMimic · 19/04/2017 19:49

They are no more similar than Karen and Catriona, or James and Joshua.

UppityHumpty · 19/04/2017 19:49

Totally different

I pronounce first as "a-lee-si-ah" not "a-leesh-ah'" by the way.

NapQueen · 19/04/2017 19:50

Same first two letters. Same last two letters. Too similar imo.

Like having an Orla and an Aurelia. Too similar.

mygorgeousmilo · 19/04/2017 19:52

Too similar for siblings, but not similar enough to get confused over

ThePinkOcelot · 19/04/2017 19:53

Similar

Crochetty · 19/04/2017 19:53

Weird I would pronounce the first as Aliss-eaa like Alice with an eeeeaaa on the end. And yes I do know one. I though Alisha was the name pronounced A-leesh-ahConfused

Soubriquet · 19/04/2017 19:54

I think it's personal preference isn't it?

I know one who says A-lees-sha which is why I went with that one but I know it can be pronounced as a-Lis-see-ah too

DonkeyOaty · 19/04/2017 19:55

Yes I would get tongue tied trying to pronounce them. Al-ee sha and Al-ee ah.

ThroughThinkandThing · 19/04/2017 19:57

Alicia is traditionally pronounced with a "sha" sound at the end, like Patricia. The pronunciation A-liss-ee-uh is new but very common - probably more so now than A-leesh-uh.

SparklyLeprechaun · 19/04/2017 20:00

I can't see any great similarity. Different pronunciation, they start with the same letters but then so do Alina, Alison, Alida.

informedchoice · 19/04/2017 20:01

The Alicia I know is in her 50s so I don't see how the pronunciation is a modern thing.

FluffyMcCloud · 19/04/2017 20:01

I'd pronounce them to sound very similar! A-lee-sha and a-lee-a so it is only an addition of the "sh" sound that makes Alia into Alicia.

However if you are saying Aaah-lee-ah and A-liss-ee-ah then they are more different...

happypoobum · 19/04/2017 20:15

Is this for sisters? Depends on the context really.

I would pronounce the first name A liss eee ya

Second name Al eee ya

MarriedinMaui · 19/04/2017 20:19

Almost all the under 8 year old girls I meet seem to have names that begin with A or E. I get them all mixed up unless I know them really well.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 19/04/2017 20:30

They will seem more similar if you learn visually rather than auditorally. I get names confused which look the same rather than sound the same. Like I think Keith and Kevin are similar names because they start with K, have the same two vowels in the same order!
